hi i just bought a R32 GTR. its running standard 7psi boost and looking for more power. all it has is twin HKS pod filters, N1 turbos and 3" cat back exhaust. i just bought a Apexi Power FC and going to get tuned just wonder if there any mods i should look at for more power b4 getting tuned. im not looking at super power that will require needing to rebuild engine, just looking at simple bolt on mods, to get more out of car.

thanks

As above standard your looking at 10.5>11 psi stock.

Depends how much you want to spend really, I managed 250kw with stock everything and a tune on 14PSI (with an exhaust camgear), mind you i dont run 14psi 24/7.

Given you have a set of N1's installed, might be an opportunity to grab a set of AFM's/Injectors and a fuel pump and push for 270>280kw.

Probably wouldn't hurt to grab an exhaust camgear aswell while your at it.

Improving the exhaust is probably the most cost effective. Make sure you get a proper turbo to cat dump. After that get a proper intercooler, cos as good as the standard one is if you want reliability and power at lower boost this is a must.

it goes just above 0.5 bar of boost. so like 7-8psi on aftermarket greedy boost gauge. we disconnected the Greddy pro spec 2 boost controller when i bought it coz car was going nuts when hitting boost.

when ppl say cam gear are they meaning just the gear or the camshaft as well?

looking at dump pipes and front pipe already, how good is standard cat?

was prob going to look at fuel pump injectors and AFM later on down the track after i see how well it goes after tune.

i just want the car to get up and boggy faster, mate drove car and said its slow as until it hits boost, laggy as f**k which i had already noticed.

Yeah cam gears go on the end of the cams, they are used for tuning purposes by the tuner and can advance/retard the camshafte depending on where u want the power.

Standard fuel pump is a good bit of kit, and will handle 300RWKW no worries unless the things Shagged

AFM Generally max out around 300RWKW or there abouts

Standard injectors are alright for around 260-270ish RWKW.

There could be a large restriction in your cat.. i dare say sort out your dump/front pipes and your cat and your response and top end will be better

044 intank- for reliability

Cam gears- for tuning flexability

Decent down pipes and cat- to remove the restriction

Nismo, bolt on adjustable fuel pressure reg- to give a little head room for your injectors

Clean and flow test your injectors

Clean out your intercooler and pipe work

Clean and insulate your coil packs, boots etc

New set of plugs

Have your radiator flushed out

Most of all, be happy with the result once all the issues are worked out... otherwise it's a veeeery slipery slope.

Cheers

Justin

I would stick with increasing the boost, completing the exhaust system and then getting the power fc tuned. With N1 turbo, and higher boost you would be looking around the 250kw mark which is plenty on the streets.

Try not to do too much unless you NEED to (for example, your car will not drive if you do not change a certain part) or else you can join alot of other members here with their never ending shopping list.

ok HKS split dump and front pipe paid for and waiting to arrive

talking to guy about buying HKS cam gears and intercooler.

going to buy another Greddy pro spec 2 and see if it was just the unit was f**ked by changing it over since everything else is installed.

now looking at fuel pump and maybe injectors. Fuel pump coz every so often car just stops accerarating like fuel cuts out.

do i really need to upgrade intercooler piping?

what fuel pump is good and easy to fit without buying all these extra iwiring adaptors and clamps and shit?

im not looking at anything over 300awkw prob closer to 250awkw for reliability and better fuel comsumption

Stock intercooler piping (and the intercooler itself) is fine, certainly not cost effective to change at this stage. Depending on the condition of the intercooler though as I said you might want to replace it.

Get a 044 the cheapest 'stock' option, you could do it yourself even. Make sure you get your mechanic/tuner to check the condition of the injectors, plugs, and ignition. If any of them are old or heading down, replace them to avoid problems down the track. Anything over 550cc is fine, similarly any plugs really but if you want to last get something like NGK (get them properly gapped etc), similarly splitfire coils are a good 'stock' option.

Definitely get the cam gears over a new FMIC or anything else really, they are probably the simplest and most cost effective upgrade you can do outside of exhaust and more boost.

Mate easiest thing to do if u got the cash is to buy a nismo intank pump. no screwin about as it drops straight in.. theyre about $350 from rhdjapan.com plus postage

also theyre quieter, Reliable as hell and can support 400rwkw if u need it

Leave your cooler piping and cooler theyre fine

If you feel the need to, pull your cooler off and wash the core out with brake clean/metho .. what ever you got layin about

youll be surprised how much oil and other dirty shit comes out

I just cleaned out my intercooler and piping few days ago, the amount of black crap in the cooler was unbelievable!

Gave it a good clean inside and outside, fins were all perfect so didnt need to straighten them

Doing this will definitely make ur cooler perform better

^^^ we just did GTR_JOEY's standard intercooler today, and used brake clean to run through the tubes and gave it a good shake around - flushed it through a couple of times and it ended up near on spotless internally. Might being doing mine soon after seeing all the oil and grime that came out of it.

If your "only" after 300 kw then forget about fuel pump, intercooler and AFM's unless you are worried about their condition or want room for more power later on (which will require turbos swapped out) - standard stuff has the capacity to support this power output, all be it, close to the max (AFM's).

Injector upgrade will be a must though, 550cc minimum.

If you want better midrange/response then yes, change those front pipes straight away - bigger the better, and get the biggest catalytic converter you can fit, this will improve the overall response of the engine, adj cam gears will be the finishing touch. After these things have been done then a good tune will be mandatory, resulting in one very quick, responsive GTR!

Also a quick note that some of the Apexi PowerFC's apparently have a software issue that results in a random miss (feels like an ignition cut), nothing major just another annoying little niggle lol. Try a search for a bit more info on this.

    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
