so i pulled of my cas sensor and it looks like previously it wasnt on right when i did the ignition timing or something and now the sprocket is broken for the cas to push into! (see photo)

do i have to get a new exhaust cam? or what? as i would prefer to be cheap and keep those cams

If i have to get new cams i dont wanna have to change all of the springs (i know i have to check the stems and buckets already)

engine:

Rb30 fully forged, rb26 head, hks cams N1's want to slide it so needs responsive cams, so do i go large lift or larger duration or what?

i've heard the stock cams are pretty good is that right?

I cant see the pics clearly. But why do u have to remove/replace the cam. Is it salvageable? Just cause the key way is snapped doesnt mean u cant use it. Just means its harder to align the CAS.

Also when replacing cams u dont have to replace the valve springs unless running a higher lift

nah its not salvageable because the cas spins off the key way (thingy) inside the cam shaft, and if it didnt align properly any movement of the ignition timing will wreck an engine.

yes i understand upgrading and replacing springs is only for a higher lift. sorry i should have said "if i do upgrade, i dont want to go for cams that you should modify other items eg. springs"

if you can align cas without using the " keyway" how do you do it?

As long as the star drive is still ok then it wont slip. The key way is just there for ease of install.

Basically without the key way u need to guess where the cas alignment should be. Try and start it a see if its correct. Might take a couple of goes or u might get it first go. Then check with a timing light and set the timing.

get a small mirror and figure out exactly where the keyway should be (can usually see pretty clearly where its snapped off) and align the keyway in the cas directly opposite and slide it in. aslong as you set the timing before driving your not gonna hurt your engine

Sorry scooby I don't know what you mean? The rubber o ring on the cas sensor itself? Or is there something I have missed.

John I tried all night to get it to crank over and it didn't fire at all, I even rotated the star sprocket a couple of times( I knew this would modify the ignition angle 1/8*360' but I was only trying to get it to splutter)

I then proceeded to check fuel and ignition, when the cas is and spun by hand the spark is seen across all 6, fuel pressurization is seen on my computer with the injector pulse rate running the same as a previously tuned.

My question would be was any signal passed threw the piece that broke? As I didn't leave it in there to fling around. Is that right?

nope, you dont need it in there. get a timing light on it and see which way you need to go with it

scooby means are you using a spacer between the cas and the steel bracket (normally you have the top timing belt cover there), if you dont you'll have problems as the cas will be pushed too far into the cam. if your replacing the top cover everytime then ignore this

    • Hi guys, long time no post as per usual! It's been a busy year so far, the biggest thing being a new job.  After 28 years in the automotive industry I decided it was time for a change.  I was losing faith in the industry and where it's heading.  Now in a completely different industry (electrical) working for a company that manufacture water pump contollers.  Not as sexy as cars but it's an interesting,  challenging industry. I now don't work Saturdays which is a bonus!  It's still 50-55 hours a week but having Saturdays ack after 28 years of working them is awesome!   No news on the GT-R but i did decide to add some more JDM goodness into my life....           1990 300 ZX.  She's not perfect but for a 35 year old car she ain't bad!  Just going to tidy it up a bit and enjoy it.  It's currently auto but will start stockpiling everything for a manual swap. It WILL distract me even further from the GT-R but im hoping not for too long! It somewhat proves a 6'8" freak can fit in a 300 ZX.  Sort of...  I drove it home from the previous owners house in Melbourne via Black Spur and Merton Gap (2 awesome bits of Victorian twisty road) and it was amazing!  Handles so well!!!   I don't think it would be worthy of a full build page but I'll post up some of the upgrades here if anyone is interested?  Cheers guys!
    • End game is to: - Remove all the slop from old worn parts - Adjust setup so that the wheels actually fit and the car is drivable (currently it is not because of the extreme rubbing on the guards).   Progress over the last couple of days, removed the rear hubs! Next steps: - Buy bushings - Replace bushings/bearings on hub - Reinstall
    • Cracked deck  And other cam snap stuff
    • A few random issues have popped up since my last update. My WMI pressure sensor failed within about 10 minutes of it seeing liquid. It was a 20$ China special, so I'm not surprised. My name brand replacement should arrive today.  My power steering assist also decided to crap out last weekend. The usual, works for about 60 seconds after starting the car then I lose it. I dusted off my old copy of NDS and connected to the HICAS ECU. Code 4 for assist solenoid.... I tested the solenoid and it's fine.  I knew the day where my HICAS ecu would crap out would come, and I welcome it. It was the last HICAS part on the car that is now in the bin. I've ordered an SSR and I will control the power steering solenoid with my Haltech ecu. It will be nice to have proper speed referenced assist again after all these years.
