I've done the web search, read the reviews ect ect...

What I want is your opinions/experiences

I've got three I'm looking at:

BCU

HDi Will need to get a gauge for this one

AEM

This will be my first mod on the stag (bar a stereo swap) and dont have alot of coin to spend so want the best "bang for buck" and reliability

If you got any alternative suggestions let me know

The turbotech T boost controllers off ebay for $30 are the best bang for buck. Holds boost perfectly. The ball and spring is a simple but perfect design.

dude... theres many greddy profec b spec 2 on sau and ebay atm...

if u can jag one for under 300 ur on a winner!

by far the best value for money EBC.... small easy to use and u can hook up a hi/low switch to ur dash for under $5 and stash it away from police eye!!!

and a gizzmo MSBCII - bit fiddly to setup if you're not doing it on a dyno (but so are all EBC's) but i like it because it reads in PSI.

i have a Gizzmo MSIBC, excellent little unit and they come at a reasonable price, i got mine for $300 new, at the same time a Profec B SpecII was $900 new!!! i previously owned a Prefec B so i thought i'd try the Gizzmo, it does a very good job at holding my GT35 on 23psi. it took me a couple of days (trips to and from work) to find a good balance between the duty and gain so it would ramp quickly and would spike, but i haven't had to touch it since then.

yer exactly. took a few runs on the backroads at night to get the gain set up properly. also got 6 settings, so you can put it down to stock boost if you want to save fuel or lend your car to someone.

other thing i like about it that its pretty non-descript. i have mine mounted in the center console and it's virtually undetectable - just looks like a black screen with the car switched off - could come in handy for roadside inspections.

yeah i agree, i've never use multiple boost settings on my cars, always just set it to what i want and leave it. though i can see the benefit on say a manual car for drag purposes. the Gizzmo lets you go through presents from a remote button. so say you want to launch on 14psi but then once your off the line click the button and run 20psi.

I had a turbotech that was a bit of a lottery over 17-18psi. Perhaps they are better now at higher boost levels. At the time small increases on the boost controller led to large changes in boost level. Up to that point they are fantastic bang for buck boost controller.

I have Profec B's on both cars now and they are hard to beat for the price if you want to go electronic.

So I guess the verdict is in:

go buy a profec 2

But seriously NOONE has used any of those controllers here?

I can understand the first one looks cheap and nasty but the HDi and AEM look alright (and have pretty good reviews)

If I'm going greddy I'll have to get a second hand one, could there be any issue with the soleiniod being old and prone to failure? Anything else to watch out?

im currently using Ark advanced boost controller - finding it very good - simple enough to use too

might go to a HKS one soon but definatly happy with the ARK one which is also made in japan

i'd say a second hand brand name controller would be as risky as buying a no name controller......and when it comes down to it, boost regulation is not something you want to be running the risk of.

and to the guy running a turbotech at 18psi - probably more to do with wastegate spike than anything. its a lot to be running on an internally gated turbo and to expect a manual controller to be able to handle.

Quick question, whats so good about the profec? is it the proven reliability or is it something else that im missing? Starting to think maybe the aem is for me...

    • The wiring diagram for the R33 RB25 is freely available, and is essentially the same same as most other RBs (just with differences as to which pin # does which job). To get the ECU to power up, you just need to provide power to the ECCS relay, and have the other power feeds that come in from the top left of the wiring diagram (wrt the ECU) that give perma power to the fuel pump relay, the ECU itself, etc etc, all connected. When you put power on all these it will just come to life. It's pretty clear from the diagram what needs to happen. Just follow the lines from the 12V + supply stuff in the top left over towards the ECU. I've even posted snips of such diagrams (not for vanilla 25, I think for Neo and 26) to various threads here in the last few months, talking about what it takes to get the fuel pump and FPCM up and going. Search these up and they will help get you started on doing the same with the vanilla 25 diagram. Hell, for all I know, I've done the same with that one in years past and have forgotten.
    • Yep...so unless someone posts up the answer you will need to probe from the ECU connector to the dash plug with a multi meter in continuity mode to trace the wires.  Note the ECU has multiple - and + (and across different key settings - Battery, IGN and Start) and most likely the power is fed from the connector(s) that is normally near the left hand headlight.
    • Thanks Duncan, I am actually just trying to get the Rb turning and running with the RB25DET S2 original loom itself  I am just trying to get it going outside the body and not thinking about the S15 or trying to match anything to the S15 loom at all I am only trying to see if anyone has done this and what pin they found to be the ignition trigger and ECU+/- on the dash connector, that's about it. Thanks  
    • Hi Guys, Does anyone know any aftermarket part numbers for a starter motor to suit the VQ25DET? I can find lots of alternative part number for the VQ35DE, which I assume would fit, but there is a lot of conflicting information out there. Thanks..
    • I don't understand how this hasn't boiled down to - Upgrade the turbo when you have everything required. ECU, injectors, fuel pump, turbo, etc. Do it all at once.  If you don't have everything required, just enjoy the car as it is and keep saving up your pennies.
