Cold Air Box R34 Gtt - Anyone Know Where To Get One To Fit Return Flow Cooler/stock Cooler?

chasing a cold air box to cover a pod in a r34 gtt

to fit over return flow piping, the justjap ones dont fit, have had a bit of a read around, and have seen the "custom made" ones from perspex, not really keen on that idea

anyone know?

Some people want to run a pod, for what reason is to their own(performance, looks, sounds).

Just make a box up your self man, its not too hard and not expensive at all. You can get a nice sheet of aluminum from bunnings, measure and cut it up and fit it all in. Spray the outside with some heat retardant paint, spray a top coat of black and away you go. You could go further and line the inside and seal it properly but its all up to you.

I don't trust any of these aftermarket box covers. Every car is different(unless you are completely standard with a standard pod, standard intake pipe, standard afm etc). Once you change one aspect, almost everything else is thrown out of proportion. You can get a professional custom box made for about $300 - $400 from most skyline specialists/tuners/workshops.

Ive seen some of the boxes that come out of Advan performance and wow they are schmick.

Well you can't see a POD once it has a box around it. + a factory airbox would look a lot better than your backyard solution. People always think PODs offer performance benefits too, when they simply don't on even mid level setups.

Depends on his setup, what he needs/wants - if it wasn't return flow, and went over the cam belt area then indeed there would be issues with getting airboxes fitting around the snorkel area, sometimes not at all.

Perhaps more clarification around the "want/need/budget" would make it easier to offer suggestions. Plus if you box the pod you need to run come CAI from the front bar to make use of it.

True information here and I do agree with you. The only reason I am running a pod is because Hypergear highly suggested a 4" intake with a big pod. Best I could do is a 3" intake with a apexi pod in a box with a CAI running through the old hole for the intercooler. Since he is running a return flow, he won't have this extra hole so that puts him out of place to run a sealed box as the thing will be choking on it self...

I have a Tommy kiara front bar on ATM and will be putting a cold air intake piping in.

Is return flow intercooler the better option? Will be buying the front mount in the next week or two...

Was going To go with return flow, a little more expensive but is it the better option?

UAS told me they could pre cut their cold air boxes for return flow intercoolers using stock piping

Since when is a standard airbox on a gtt or gtst better then a pod filter when you are running 250-300rwkw?? I have seen back to back dynos with the airbox loosing 10rwkw from 280 down to 270rwkw.

Not to mention the standard intake pipe is rubbish once you change the turbo, I could not make anything over 250rwkw it would just suck shut. To make up custom 3" metal piping from the standard airbox to the turbo intake is very time consuming and tricky as you need to have it meet exactly where the airbox connection is. I made up a custom metal 3" intake pipe with a pod, then all you need is some shielding. That is the best way for performance and ease of setup.

From what I hear GTR's are a different story.

Just re-read the initial post and it sounds like you have the standard turbo, if so then ignore my post as yes you should leave the standard airbox :) If you change to a larger turbo then read my post.

I have a Tommy kiara front bar on ATM and will be putting a cold air intake piping in.

Is return flow intercooler the better option? Will be buying the front mount in the next week or two...

What do you mean by better option?

A return flow intercooler is simpler as you can reuse some of the factory piping. It is also more friendlier with the cops as you dont have to cut any holes.

For outright performance I would say a return flow intercooler is worse and most serious setups will run aftermarket intake manifolds so the intercooler piping doesnt have to cross the engine again.

As you can see there are many factors.

I agree with this. It does seem logically incorrect to assume you can run a bigger turbo with the same intake setup... Almost all aftermarket turbos have bigger intake mouths for bigger pipe setups.

OP - Are you saying that you have NOT purcahsed the intercooler kit yet either?

And want advice on both items???

Ive had a fair few dyno runs in both my cars in the past, both running pods. There has been no affect on the kw output over x amount of runs. I don't think any dyno tuner will run 20 dyno tunes with a closed bonnet anyhow. This being said both my pods were almost perfectly shielded on the engine side and had a CAI setup.

ARC airbox with vented bonnet, heat resistant tunnel from air filter to bonnet vent, I think that is the best CAI ever tbh....

Ive been pull over and never been defected for it... in fact never been defected at all... and nothing is standard and I dont hide it, but none of its dodgey and I think that is part of the reason I dont get defected...

how many things can most people on here be defected for already...

question is do you want the best solution or just a mediocre one...?

How is cutting a hole in your bonnet a "direct bolt-on option"?

Also what metal intake pipe did you use to connect the ARC airbox to the intake of your hks turbo? I am pretty sure the one you get with the hks kit wont fit. You would need to make a custom intake pipe in the perfect location to meet the afm on the right angle etc.

It would be the BIGGEST pain in the arse to DIY some intake pipe to suit an A/M turbo and the ARC box. I was going to get one and duct my bonnet but the effort required for probably no gains over my sealed box with CAI isn't worth it.

I had one but sold it off... It was made from aluminum and had a bolt on lid for easy filter cleaning, suited the turn flow cooler and AFM etc perfectly and the cops were fine with it... Not sure who made it but if u PM me I could dig up some pics for ya?

    • Hi,  Just joined the forum so I could share my "fix" of this problem. Might be of use to someone. Had the same hunting at idle issue on my V36 with VQ35HR engine after swapping the engine because the original one got overheated.  While changing the engine I made the mistake of cleaning the throttle bodies and tried all the tricks i could find to do a throttle relearn with no luck. Gave in and took it to a shop and they couldn't sort it. Then took it to my local Nissan dealership and they couldn't get it to idle properly. They said I'd need to replace the throttle bodies and the ecu probably costing more than the car is worth. So I had the idea of replacing the carbon I cleaned out with a thin layer of super glue and it's back to normal idle now. Bit rough but saved the car from the wreckers 🤣
    • After my last update, I went ahead with cleaning and restoring the entire fuel system. This included removing the tank and cleaning it with the Beyond Balistics solution, power washing it multiple times, drying it thoroughly, rinsing with IPA, drying again with heat gun and compressed air. Also, cleaning out the lines, fuel rail, and replacing the fuel pump with an OEM-style one. During the cleaning process, I replaced several hoses - including the breather hose on the fuel tank, which turned out to be the cause of the earlier fuel leak. This is what the old fuel filter looked like: Fuel tank before cleaning: Dirty Fuel Tank.mp4   Fuel tank after cleaning (some staining remains): Clean Fuel Tank.mp4 Both the OEM 270cc and new DeatschWerks 550cc injectors were cleaned professionally by a shop. Before reassembling everything, I tested the fuel flow by running the pump output into a container at the fuel filter location - flow looked good. I then fitted the new fuel filter and reassembled the rest of the system. Fuel Flow Test.mp4 Test 1 - 550cc injectors Ran the new fuel pump with its supplied diagonal strainer (different from OEM’s flat strainer) and my 550cc injectors using the same resized-injector map I had successfully used before. At first, it idled roughly and stalled when I applied throttle. Checked the spark plugs and found that they were fouled with carbon (likely from the earlier overly rich running when the injectors were clogged). After cleaning the plugs, the car started fine. However, it would only idle for 30–60 seconds before stalling, and while driving it would feel like a “fuel cut” after a few seconds - though it wouldn’t fully stall. Test 2 – Strainer swap Suspecting the diagonal strainer might not be reaching the tank bottom, I swapped it for the original flat strainer and filled the tank with ~45L of fuel. The issue persisted exactly the same. Test 3 – OEM injectors To eliminate tuning variables, I reinstalled the OEM 270cc injectors and reverted to the original map. Cleaned the spark plugs again just in-case. The stalling and “fuel cut” still remained.   At this stage, I suspect an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, caused during the cleaning process. This has led me to look into getting Frenchy’s fuel hanger and replacing the unit entirely. TL;DR: Cleaned and restored the fuel system (tank, lines, rail, pump). Tested 550cc injectors with the same resized-injector map as before, but the car stalls at idle and experiences what feels like “fuel cut” after a few seconds of driving. Swapped back to OEM injectors with original map to rule out tuning, but the issue persists. Now suspecting an intermittent power or connection fault at the fuel pump hanger, possibly cause by the cleaning process.  
    • For race cars, this is one part where I find having the roll cage bar having gone through a hole in the floor better than the build it up on a ledge inside... The Merc I help on, the main hoop ends are marked on the car, and the jack is marked... Jack goes under a few inches and lifts one whole side of the car up... Removes that fight for long slim jacks for race car duties!   My biggest issue for the daily drivers I work on, is my jacks don't go high enough. The jacks start out on a few blocks, jack it up, then start a second jack under it on more blocks, and then I can get an axle stand under it. My axle stands are presently in use, and are nearly fully extended. The car is sitting with barely more than a cm of clearance to get the wheel off the studs! Sarah's Kluger is the same, as it has an ungodly amount of droop available in the suspension and a distinct lack of good jacking points!
    • Happy? Yep, my to do list is getting shorter and shorter. Either this light approaching is the end of the tunnel, or I'm about to be hit by a train... Ha ha ha   Also, Duncan isn't that far out of town that you need to make a multi day drive out of it. 😛
