Interesting discussion, I have always thought about whether full comp or 3rd party/fire/theft is the best solution for different cars.

Number 1 financial threat is if you have an accident with an expensive car or property. That can leave you bankrupt or paying off a loan for the rest of your life.

Once that is covered, then the rest depends on how much your car is worth vs how much they want to charge you. The example of a not at fault accident and having to fight an insurance company by yourself does seem very scary though.

If you car is worth $16k and $10k is covered by theft and if you pay $2k a year for full comp insurance for 3 years then you have paid the difference anyway.

Its a complicated decision and I dont think a blanket statement can be made.

No you don't :P I'm 21 and I got a quote from em ;)

@ Juliette - I'm 100% on going Shannons, just a matter of time before I call up Just Car and tell them they are shit and that I want a refund of 4 weeks of my premium LOL.

On a side note... To anyone else that's thinking to go with Shannons. Initially, the quote they gave me was $1669 for an agreed value of $18,000. Then I thought about it and wanted to raise the agreed value a little more, so I called up and asked to put it up a bit more and I told them I don't mind paying more in premium.

So the guy asked me how much money and stuff I've put into it, I told him, then he went to ask his colleage that's into Skylines, and he said, "look, we can make it $20,000 for you, but can't go above that", then I asked, so how much more would I have to pay? And he got back to me with "oh, I just put down $20,000 and your premium is still $1669". And I was just like :glare:

So pretty much, if I didn't ask for higher agreed value, they woulda given me $18,000 for the same premium that I'm paying.... :glare:

I have a friend that works at Shannons so it makes things easy. My R34 was insured for $20K although it wasn't worth that much. It's their maximum agreed value for a stockish R34 GT-T.

they use to be fairly strict on that. back when i first got my GT-T and insured it with Shannons i was 21 (maybe even 20, not sure) and they said the only reason they were willing to insure me was because i was a member of a CAMS affiliated car club and that normally they don't go that young. But it definitely seems to have relaxed over the years, perhaps they just don't like to advertise this though...

Same. They insured me at 21 because I had a CAMS license :)

It definitely wasn't easy tho man...

I have called them up 8 months ago, was rejected even though I told them I'm with SAU and it's a CAMS affiliated club and they said call back when you are 25.

As my insurance got closer to end date, I called Shannons again, the dude said that I tried to get a quote 8 months ago and they rejected me, and he said to call back after a year since the quote was rejected. I didn't give up though, called back 5mins later, spoke to a different guy, I told him I wanted a quote and he said I did have a rejected quote but meh LOL, he deleted my profile and started a new one and gave me a quote for $1669 for $18,000.

And just the other day as I'm about to get the policy, I wanted my agreed value to go higher, so I called up and asked for it..

So that's my journey with Shannons lol

Fail once, twice, 3 times, just don't give up, keep trying until you speak to the right person lol xD

They haven't. You can be under 25 but mustnt have had any kind of black mark against u prior to them covering you. I called them the second time at 22 having owned the gtr for a year with no accidents, we hadn't even discussed claims or my age bar the fact I was under 25 and they wouldn't cover me regardless of sau paid membership based solely on my having had 3 speeding fines all under 10km over the limit over the last 3 years. So yeah, pretty strict given jci never even asked about individual fines only if I'd been disqualified or not.

Try call again and speak to another person :P

I called up shannons and were happy to insure me. Got quoted $1875 for 93k agreed and everything on the car is covered. Got them to also place my evo 7 (27k LOL and daily driver) on there and now my insurance is only $2979 combined (multi-car discount) and under 25. But my record is super clean; the fact i live in a really really low theft area and I hardly drive my car which plays a part too.

Never ever considered shannons to actually insure my car so easily. Definitely always go full comp as there's no way I'd go anything below that unless the insurance itself is worth more than the car.

Mmmmm........ You got an agreed value of 73k more than I do and you only pay extra $175? lol.....

Also, quick question, does agreed value eventually go down?

The biggest thing I noticed was Shannons are much more robust when it comes to the agreed value of your car (they even said it to me!). Just car only gave me 75k.... and paying more premium. Seems like if your a true enthusiast than they look after you in some ways. But yeh eventually the agreed value begins to creep down over the years.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just thought I'd post an update on this, I called up this morning to go through with my policy with Shannons, and only just found out that you can get a 10% discount if you have a CAMS license :D

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
