Hi just bought my first skyline it's a n/a r33 I have noticed a couple of small faults but one thing that seems to be odd and bugging me is when I go to warm the car up and I turn the steering wheel the revs seem to jump abit not by much maybe 200-300 rpms not sure what seems to be the problem doesn't affect the driving really but just curious to know what seems to be the cause . I'm also curious about the 2 lights I have on my dash one says "SLIP" and the other "4WD" I have seen other r33s with this but not sure what they mean or when the light actually comes on . Anyone know anything about these things and could let me know ? Thanks :)

The revs jump when you turn the wheel because the power steering runs off the engine and the engine revs itself the stop it stalling. Same goes for air-con.

I'm guessing "SLIP" means loss of traction? "4WD" means 4 Wheel Drive. You must have a GTS4.

slip light means the rear wheels are loosing/lost traction, and when it stays on it means the front wheels are pulling the car. 4wd light means there is something wrong with the 4wd system, from my understanding

I believe your right about the 4wd light cause I removed the 4wd relay from the boot and the light turned on and stayed on . So does that mean the gts4 are only 4wd when the rear wheels lose traction ? Do you also know anything about it being 4 wheel steering ?

Cheers

if no hicas then no 4 wheel steering

Yes I do see hicas in the relay box , so from what you read is it safe to say I have a GTS4 ?

Just for future reference what is it that makes a gts4 ? Is it the 4wd ? Or the 4ws ? Or both ? =/

And my final question is does anyone Have any information about the LSD, it's an import too if that helps ? Cause there is a relay saying 4wd LSD is it safe to take this out and drive ? Will it even make it rwd ?

The revving up whilst turning is normal, as explained above. But the thing is, to hear it or for the engine to do that whilst turning, you must be stationary. You should never turn the wheel of a car while it isn't moving, if you're an OK driver, there's no need to. It puts undue stress on the steering components, specifically the PS pump.

from what i can remember most came fitted with hicas (there should be a light on your dash, a big metallic unit sitting in front of the rear diff)

as far i as i can remember the gts4 was awd (based on the whole gtr attessa system) 4 wheel steering (hicas / super hicas in some cars) is just a factory option although most came fitted anyway.

& the lsd transfers power to the wheel(s) that aren't gripping when there is a loss of traction... in retrospect - drifters lock their diff so its the same amount of power to both wheels irrespective of traction - thus makes it easier to keep the rears spinning when drifting / linking corners..

GTS4 comes with ATTESSA AWD out of the GT-R; all GTS4 have the AWD, otherwise it'd just be a GTS.

Most Skylines have HICAS (4 Wheel Steer), pretty sure was standard on all but the most povo-spec ones.

the revs seem to jump abit not by much maybe 200-300 rpms

If it's sort of jumping from idle by 2-300rpm when you lock the wheel either side, as others have said it's nothing to worry about, but have a look under your car & check the condition of the usual suspension stuff like end links, ball joints & rubber cv boots etc

All cars with belt driven power steering have a power steering pressure switch with sends a message to a AAC valve which idles the engine up to stop it from stalling with the load created on the crankshaft.

Your car is a GTS-4 simply look in your engine bay at the fire wall and if the engraving is ENR33 (6 numbers) then thats a GTS-4. Slip light is simply loss of traction, the system is RWD and depending on how much slip the computer reads from a lot of sensors about 100 times a second it will send power to the wheels anywhere from 0-50% to the front.

All GTS-4's that are R33 and R34 NEVER came with HICAS (4 wheel steer) from Nissan because they are non-turbos and with the 4WD parts in the car making excess weight they did not follow in fitting it. The GTS comes with it because its RWD and 60kg lighter. I wouldnt worry about HICAS though, everyone sees the light sooner or later and just locks the 4 wheel steer.

    • Check the injectors flow evenly, and are actually flowing what you and the ECU think they should be flowing. If it's starting up on starter fluid, you have a fuel issue. Is it possible under cranking your fuel pump is turning off?   The harness you replaced, is that the whole engine harness? Do yourself a test, and drop the old harness on and plug it into the Z32 ECU. It's possible they've wired things different. From memory S1 to S2 is different in RB25 and you may have a wrong loom
    • I haven’t pulled the injectors to watch them spray yet but they are clicking from the cas and all of the spark plugs are wet with fuel. I’ve thought the cylinders were being flooded from the beginning and was hoping fuel pressure would fix it. Tonight I am going to pull the rail and watch the injectors spray. Don’t know how to test/diagnose if the plugs are firing in correct sequence but that should be a timing thing and as far as timing goes my car still has the half moon for the cas can only install it 1 way. And my mechanical timing is 100% correct I posted photos above. Confirmed with the balancer on and off.
    • I checked spark on all cylinders and they all visually have spark with the plug pulled and grounded, but plug 1 is the only one that fouled. This was a running swap that blew up and was rebuilt by a machine shop, put a new wiring specialties harness and did all gaskets, studs, and bolts while it was out.  compression is 135-150 across all cylinders. Aside from that from my understanding with the z32 ecu and maf the car should start regardless. The wiring for TPS and the dual 02 sensor/ dual knock sensor stuff shouldn’t actually stop the car from starting or even running well, (just slightly rich)  they just give fault codes. Car supposedly is supposed to start as long as you have z32 afm and ecu with the nistune base map and that’s info coming from a well known and trusted tuner who does a lot with SR/RB (Rsenthalpy). After more trouble shooting today where I’m at right now is that the cas is sending signal to the injectors they click while spinning the rotor, Fuel pressure is now set at 43psi, all cylinders have good compression and all of the plugs looked great (just wet with fuel) except for cylinder 1 which was very black (cylinder 1 has 150psi compression). all of the coils generate spark if pulled out and grounded out on the head. On the fuel pump car just pops into the exhaust. On starting fluid car will fire off. Hard to tell if all cylinders are firing off but definitley a couple. sounds like all of them but it’s only for 3-5 seconds hard to tell.
    • Final update!!! Got the front bar fitted and sprayed and all sorted now. My cutouts worked great and the indicators aren’t just falling off. 😂
    • Is this a brand new LSD? if so, have you followed any break/bed in procedure for it? Usually involves heaps of figure 8 patterns, a fluid flush.
