Hey there,

My 96 Stagea 25x has developed a rhythmic whiny sound, Im pretty sure it began when I got the cambelt done at 102,000km

At first though it was only occasional and very faint so I just assumed it would go away as the cambelt settled in or something.

Anyway 10,000 km later and it is there pretty much all the time and is really starting to annoy me regardless whether it is doing damage or not!

Its only at idle, and happens in all gears, ie park neutral drive etc

As soon as some throttle is added though it disappears.

Have added video so please add your 2 cents.

Dropped by a mechanic but he basically said it sounds like its from within the cambelt casing but hard to tell without opening things up and doing some decent investigation.

So looking at few hundred just to get started.

So if anyone else has experienced this or has any tips/advice would be much appreicated.

Its completely stock and I might foot down on occasion but generally its fairly normal use, Im no racer or anything.

Cheers,

Tom

Take you 5 minutes to remove the top cam cover - see if the belt is too tight or fraying etc. Mark the CAS so it goes back on in the exact same place and don't turn the engine at all while doing this.

OK its a 25X which is a non turbo, correct?

I have a 25g also N/A. The timing belt was done because the old one laminated because the tensioner pulley bearing seized. A day later the waterpump shaft broke and the fan had an orgasm under the bonnet. Not my fault. It fa***ked the radiator too.

None of these things happened when I did the new belt on the RS4. So maybe someone has stuffed up either the fitting of the belt or have overtensioned one of the aux belts. Since 1984 all my Nissans have had the squeaky belt syndrome.

Incidently are you Aus of offshore? I have never seen/heard of another N/A in Aus.

really does sound to me like you're chewing out your water pump

Yes Mike, from what we experienced that seems a definite. I think it is the "squealie syndrome" from which we suffer.

I never had a "squealie" until I got my first Sky in 1984.

I dont think it is the water pump per se, it is the over tensioning of the belt that buggers the system. Is it the ribbed belts that cause the problem.I can not recall a problem with any vehicle that had solid belts, that is since , a long time ago.

If the W/P bearing seizes and the shaft breaks, that is an under bonnet orgasm.

    • @Murray_Calavera iam just considering options 🙂 of course it is very expensive so that why i ask here 🙂  @joshuaho96 I looked at that GCG hybrid(i remember looking at it few weeks before) So this is "that" hybrid where i send them my turbo and they upgrade the inside to Garrett stuff and then they send it back. It cost around 1200-1300 USD which is FAR cheaper than the HKS and it is what iam looking for(i just do not have experience like this...to send something off to "upgrade" ) @tylink720 that is like 150 USD turbo no? 😄 I dont think i have the "ease on my mind" with this kind of turbo. I just put over 7000k USD to "LINK" up my engine...dont want to blow it up with cheap turbo 😄     EDIT: https://www.cj-motor.com/gcg-turbo-charger-for-nissan-rb20det-rb25det-high?srsltid=AfmBOooVeOZ6CZ6r1AIv5m-KPaa6BvudIPJTY8LW78khkd-gQlsaCht9 I looked at this and it seems ok? It is that CGC hybrid and it costs around 1250 USD (with back shipping). Do any of you have experience with this hybrid on NEO turbo? I quickly look thru the forum/web and it seems very good.

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
