from wiki: The number of surviving 944s is falling due to the high maintenance costs

yikes

924 may be a better option perhaps?

Nah. I sold my 924 cause my dads mech said the fuel injection system was prone to failure (mine wasn't and didn't show any signs on this though).

944s are better.

Wikipedia... lol

please let my bunky sell quick, i want moar powa NOW! lol

When you say track do you mean fun days or competitive stuff? If serious about track you can rule out most of the older stuff as they will never be competitive.

Forget about an AW11 unless you get a supercharged one, you will have to pour alot of money into an n/a one to get any decent power. You can run a pulley on the supercharger and run around 11-13 psi, my old s/c aw11 had 100rwkw just with that done. Mind you besides doing cams and intake/exhaust mods thats about all you can do to them with alot of money been spent. They are alot of fun though, felt more like 150rwkw compared to other cars i've driven.

I wouldnt bother with any KE earlier then an ke70/ae71, there not designed to be tracked, try and find an ae71 as they have the t50 box and a 4ag will bolt straight in. IMO there older ones are more for the oldschool guy who wants a little fun, they will never be as quick as something like a s13 or similar just due to there suspension setup.

If your not that serious about track and just want a fun car in general then really anything goes, your better of trying to find something thats not a cop magnet, so an old corolla or celica, datto or similar. You dont need much power to have fun, my old ae86 had bugger all from the 4ag but it was alot of fun, the sound of the thing was awesome.

MX5s are cheap and have huge potential, with a perfectly balanced lightweight RWD chassis and wishbone suspension all around. Parts and upgrade paths are very sorted and understood, with plenty of stuff available out of the US. On top of that the MX5 club in WA runs regular sprints/autokhanas at RAC Driving Centre, and track days at Barbs, with multiple classes depending upon how modified your car is. It would almost certainly be the car to choose if you can get over the whole hairdresser's car prejudice. ;)

Rod your KE looks great! heaps good condition :)

I love KE rollas, and I can get a cheap 4AGE easily, a friend of mine has a written of ae86 sitting around

Paul - Not serious track work, i haven't done much before, just a few skidpan days here and there but im still learning, im looking for a car I can work on and get some relatively good results - obviously not gonna get mass hp out of a 5k car ...

cheap parts and easy to work on are probably my main requirements! i dont make much money unfortunately :(

I'd love the old Rollas/Datsuns since I just have a thing for the old classics, but looking at some other projects it looked like they needed alot of work to be done converting the suspension/brakes before I could even start working on power by putting a newer engine in?

But I'd love to restore one and work on it, that would be my favourite out of all the cars that have been mentioned

Just worried with my limited funding I wouldn't be able to afford it, whereas with something like a civic/integra I can probably just do a few mods on the brakes/sway bars and the car would already be ready for some light track work

mattah - i know! hahaha ive seen 100's of good reviews and i met a guy with a mx5 who told me how good the club was with track days etc ... but ...

http://perth.gumtree.com.au/c-Cars-Vehicles-Motorbikes-Parts-cars-Mazda-Mx-5-good-condition-W0QQAdIdZ301662537

thats the only mx5 in perth i can afford and ... it looks like i got it from "papa smurf" LOL

james the datto i think is about to get sold :( i didnt get to go see the guy was to busy and he already got an offer :( :( :( (the 120y sedan)

the 280zx was pretty good though! but automatic and 2L non turbo in that heavy body = SLUG

i test drove it .. handles very well, but slow as hell and with automatic transmission it just wouldnt get going - i thinks it needs RB engine + manual conversion?

also the old mans not keen on the euros :( (porsche/bmw)

yeah agree to what u said rod :) the sedans are lots nicer, but im restricted on choice .. if i go down the classic car road i dont mind waiting it out for a nice one tho!

i also went to see the EG sedan civic - it had no paint left at all :| half the car was just faded away interior was also in pretty nasty condition and the owner didnt seem like he gave 2 craps about the car at all so i walked away from that one

i just mass detailed the sexcel -- looks effing amazing will show you guys pics tomoro LOL

putting the ad up later tnite and pics tomoro!

looking forward to having the cash in hand

    • Was there ever a model of the Stagea m35 that didnt have a badge on the grill? I thought I saw that somewhere, some aero edition or something? I cant find it again? davemoto
    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
