hey all, just wanted to ask any guys with 31's whats involved with putting a 20 or 25 into a 31? looking at a cheap 2l pintara wagon and rough cost for putting in a 20 or 25 with auto box.

rather put in this section for a quick reply. wondering if it could be done for around the 4K mark not including the car.

cheers

matt

While I never swapped an engine in my old r31, I did have the misfortune to have the torque converter die... was cheaper to get it converted to manual, so naturally I did that. I think the parts were around $650 which came with the pedals and xfercase and clutch, and around $650 labor to fit.. this was back in 2003 so I don't know if the parts/labor would be cheaper/more expensive but I'm guessing if you got the engine + box you'd save a bit. That said the sr20 is probably cheaper and lighter and they give a decent amount of power and are pretty darn strong... also you'd have to factor in getting bigger brakes and getting it engineered. Dark.Sky put a rb25det into his 32 which originally had the rb20det and he had to do the above so you can guess that there is probably a little bit more involved for you...

gonna struggle doin that on a pintara matt

even tho the r31 platform is different, the trans tunnel on the manual is narrower

*edit* - read that you're goin to do it with an auto, thats not so bad

if its pintara, you'll just need skyline crossmember and some RB30 engine mounts (as the RB20 / RB25 ones push it too far forward and fan chews out the back of the radiator)

if you can find a skyline to put it into, piece of cake. swap RB30 engine mounts off and onto the new motor, run loom, think theres like 5 wires to get it to basically power up (theres a wiki section on R31SC with this info from memory). If you score an S3, the auto is the same as 20DET and 25DET auto boxes (4sp electronic auto)

haha thats what i was thinking matt. found a one owner pintara with only 120000 ks on it. its got the 2l auto and only wants $1200 for it.

yeah adam something to put the dogs in the back. dont think i could handle the stock 2L though

tonnes of gxe , silo, and TI s3 r31 for 500-1000 bucks in vic country area. in good nick too just out of rego- RWC

ebay is full of them

rb20det one too but he wants a bit much for it

I tried to buy a nice one in dinga the other day but someone was test driving it while the guy was on the phone to me, kid bought it. grrrrrrrrrr

yeah more than i have to spend though:( only have a budget of 5K at this stage

If 5k total is your budget, I'd definately follow the above advice and just buy a 31 with all the bits and pieces (one with an rb30 will do) - Can probably get a Silhouette for that money in decent nick - good cars

nah has to be a wagon so silo is out. thinking maybe a patrol with the rb30 in and doing some mods on one of them

... or just get an R31 Wagon... the GXE's are pretty darn good as a platform to start with... I don't argue with your choice but the r31 platform is robust and is good for many applications - just need to be patient and get the right one

Good luck! I reckon for $5k you'll get an excellent skyline

    • Hi...so a "development" here aswell The swap is "done" and car went "test drive" BUT it seems the clutch(maybe gearbox?) is a little bit sad? I bought this clutch kit https://justjap.com/products/xtreme-heavy-duty-organic-clutch-flywheel-kit-nissan-skyline-r31-r32-r33-push-type "Problem" is that the first gear is hard to put into and it seems that the clutch is not disengaged. It was not the problem with the old clutch...(or like sometime the first gear would not get as easy specialy when the fluid was cold) So? Can it be like...bad "install" or is the clutch wrong ((it should not have been) i done research to get the right one) Or is this "normal" with new clutch and needs to be break in?
    • @Duncan I can try  and thanks i did not thought about VIN and part numbers for 33/34. @GTSBoy yeah it looks like iam gonna do that
    • Forgot to include this but this is the mid section of my steering rack that looks like it has a thread/can be turned with that notch mentioned in the post:
    • Hey everyone, Wanted to pick some brains about this issue I'm having with rebuilding my 33 rack (PN is 49001-19U05). All of the tutorials/videos I've seen online are either R34 or S Chassis racks which seem to be pretty straightforward to disassemble but this process doesnt carry over to my rack. Few of the key differences that I've noted The pinion shaft on the other racks bolt on with 3 torx bolts: Whereas my rack bolts on with 2 allen head bolts: These changes are pretty inconsequential but the main difference is how you pull the actual rack out of the housing. The other skyline/s chassis racks can be taken out by tapping the rack out of the body with a socket and it just slides right out. I'm unable to do that with my rack because there's a hard stop at the end that doesn't let the seal/shaft be tapped out. Can also see a difference in the other end of the rack where mine has a notch that looks like you're able to use a big wrench to unthread 2 halves of the rack whereas the other racks are just kinda set in with a punch. My rack: Other racks: TLDR; Wanted to know if anyone has rebuilt this specific model of steering rack for the R33 and if there were any steps to getting it done easier or if I should just give this to a professional to get done. Sorry if this post is a bit messy, first one I've done.
    • I would just put EBC back on the "I would not use their stuff" pile and move on.
