ive bought a boost controller cranked it to 10psi and regapped the plugs and changed to the r34gtt smic cooler... im now tossing up between an safc computer, z32 nistuned ecu and a full blown after market power fc or microtech setup. i plan on in the future going high flowed turbo fuel pump and injectors big front mount cooler would the cheap safc computer not be able to cope with theses mods?? i just dont want to buy stuff that i am going to have to update down the track. the z32 ecus nistuned are great but its just as dear as a 2nd hand power fc it seems....

make sure you go to a place that specifically does the Z32/nistune setup for R33's and tunes them for a set price.

They are often a fair bit of trouble shooting to get all setup correctly so there is the possibility of a place screwing you by saying it will 'probably cost about x' but then give you a bill that is double that 'because it took so much work to get it setup right'. Heard this story quite a few times...

And even though i went this route the first time and all was good. When i upgraded turbo, injectors and Z32 i went to a different place and when they said it would be about $300-$400 to tune as it would be just rescaling the existing tune and then adjusting for the new boost/turbo. Well when i went to pick it up there was a nice $1000 bill because 'we couldnt get it to work off the existing tune so we had to start again and tune it from scratch...'.

F$%K. nice one....

Have a read on here of people using the Z32 + NIStune setup.

It just seems like way too many horror stories and headaches to me. If it was any other car, I would recommend the NIStune whole heartedly, I have one myself and I love it. But in an R33, it seems like too much of a 'patch-up' type job. Especially in light of needing an 8-bit ECU instead of a 16-bit; that is so easy to get wrong and then before you know it you're hundreds of dollars out of pocket.

1000 dollars and your set rather then 2 for PFC

Way off. A series one or two RB25 PFC can easily be had for ~$1000. Have seen several for sale recently under that as well. And if you're willing to purchase one without the hand controller then that knocks another couple hundred off.

I got mine for 600$..just saw one sell on ebay under 500$..

Its your best bet for R33

I ment 2 for buying the ecu and getting it tuned properly then yes 2 would be a realistic figure to but them on there own 1000 yes your right. Nistune cost around 1000 fired tuned drive away not so cheap when you go a new unit. Also y risk getting a PFC and getting caught by popo and having a red sticker slapped on your window. Stock look is best

It doesnt have a useable knock control.

BSA z32 nistune isnt quite that cheap due to needing a z32 ecu to start with. They sell for around $300ish. And as mentioned they have to be the correct type.

And yes there is a bit more tuning time involved. If i give a quote for tuning the only time its more expensive is for labour if needed.

Just bought an 8-bit z32ecu off ebay for $100 (it is on the nistune list)

$308 to send the ecu to nistune to have the type 2 daughterboard attached an r33 base map installed.

$350-450 for the tune (according to mods) stage 1 mods so far.

Hopefully that'll be all until i save up for injectors, turbo etc....

Fair enough I stand corrected sorry guys. In worried now using my 20 nistune on this 25/30

As its been stated before in the 30 thread, get the ECU for the head you are using (RB25DE R32 / RB25DET 33 OR RB25DE 33/RB25DET NEO/RB26DETT) and use all the sensors that are originally appropriate for that head.

Running a 20 computer on my RB30...No issues whatsoever. The only time you WILL have issues is if you try to mix and match sensors from one head/ecu with another. Obviously this doesnt apply to EVERY sensor...but overall the above statement should be followed.

What head?

I'm using an RB20 NIStune on my 25/30 but it's an R32 RB25DE head so everything is RB20 setup, no dramas

Had no idea that the knock control didn't work?

The knock control is a little unreliable because of the stock knock sensors, it happens every so while where the sensors detect knock that is just noise and the ECU just jumps to the knock map. Often tuners just won't setup a knock map and instead simply copy the main map across so nothing changes.

Personally I've added a little fuel and pulled a couple degrees up top just to be safe, but for anyone who doesn't have access to the software themselves and can't reset the codes then it can get a little annoying.

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
    • Nice car! I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
    • Should replace OR drop the tank, give it's good clean. Might be worth replacing that entire fuel level/pump/cradle thing with this: https://frenchysperformancegarage.com/products/fpg-s13-180sx-r32gtst-single-pump-hanger-kit-billet-hat-6-v3-fpg-089?gQT=2
