Hi all, thinking the other day, my subframe paint on my 33 is looking a bit ordinary, flaking off etc.. So, i have to obviously sandblast it, and rather than pay a hundred bucks or more for a good respray, why not galvanise it? would cost me about 60 bucks, never come off, make cleaning easy, and be different.

And while im at it why not do front crossmember too?

Only consideration is id need to hardness test the metal to check its not a high carbon material (unless someone knows?) because it will be heated to about 700 degrees and that will damage or soften some metals.

Anyone got some input?

Im not too worried about deformation, its a pretty solid structure, more so in denaturing the metal and softening it. ill test it soon for hardness. Powdercoating wont get inside properly and will be expensive. all else failing ill respray it myself, just like the idea of gal.. might be onto a good thing biggrin.gif

Or it might be a total failure... ill try source a second cradle so if i screw it, it wont matter

if you're talking about hot dip galvanizing then no way.

You have a chance of warping or worse from the heat if it's not done properly, plus it will add a lot more weight than just powdercoating, as your basically covering the whole thing with a thick layer of zinc.

I used to work in hot dip galvanzing a long time ago, and there is no way i would ever put anything of my car through the acid/hot dip/quick cool process.

Yeah i know its not ideal for a structure like it, but iv sent alot of even lighter things down and got done.. and it would add a couple of kgs... it was just a thought, i can get the blokes to do it a special way if need be and slow cool

    • I gotta pull you up on this. It's driving me crazy. A shutter is something that closes, like over a window or in a cmera. The word you want is shudder. That LSD is clearly f**ked. Take it to a diff shop and get it disassembled and examined by an expert. YOu might have plates welded together or something equally crazy.

    • Check the Nistune doco. There are a few assumptions being made here that might not be valid. I will list the things that occur to me: Base map. Base map for what? Base map for Z32? Then the cranking pulse width is probably wrong for an RB25. The extra 500cc of capacity might well be enough to prevent it from catching. Base map for RB25? I don't think you can load one of those into a Z32. You have to just make the settings correct for an RB25 in the Z32 base map. That is either K or the TIM to get the pulsewidth right. Loom. You bought a loom for an RB. And you plugged it into a Z32 ECU. Did you make sure that any iwre differences were swapped. From memory, there's at least a couple. And as per the others, I would suggest making sure that the fuel pressure is correct while cranking and that the injectors are actually flowing as expected. They really must come out and go on the bench, unless you do find that you have messed up as per above points. I would also suggest watching in Nistune to make sure that everything is reading correctly. That the correct binary flags are raised at the right time (like the crank signal), that there's no stupid values in K or TIM. That you have not got mismatched firmware for the ECU and/or a wrong image loaded.
