Hi there people more knowledgeable than me.

New to the skyline world but been around cars all my life.

I have not long ago purchased an R33 GTST series 1 with the following mods.

- 3inch turbo back exhaust

- K&N air filter in stock airbox

- yellow jacket coil packs

- nismo fuel pressure reg

- walbro 500hp intank fuel pump

Car is otherwise stock (including boost pressure and BOV).

My car is running like shit. Rich as all hell. Massive pops on gear change/overrun, black soot all over the rear bar and getting ~300km to a tank on the highway.

My fuel pressure seems to be way too high. About 60 psi at idle.

What should it be and how can I adjust it?

When I install a FMIC and up the boost (as we all know this will happen sooner or later) will I need to adjust it again?

Also the car occasionally hunts at idle. (600 to 900 rpm). I am guessing its not a vac leak as it doesn't do it all the time.

Will fixing the fuel pressure problem fix the occasional hunting?

Will fixing the fuel pressure fix the economy issues?

Will an ECU reset also assist?

Anything else i should check?

Fuel pressure I normally set around 38 to 40 psi with vac line removed I have no problems whit that pressure. You can't put any more then 10 pound boost with stock computer. Your o2 sensor may be dead that will cause bad fuel economy.

Try re soldering the joints in the AFM and cleaning it with electrical contact cleaner, my old R33 had similar symptoms and doing that got it running sweet. Also o2 sensor like the guy above me said, easy to replace and cheap too. Probably worth doing it regardless.

So i lowered my fuel pressure as per the gauge to about 45 psi.... Car would hardly start, spluttered when gave some throttle.

im starting to think the gauge is wrong.

How should a fuel pressure gauge be set up.

My sensor is between the fuel filter and the FPR, Is this right?

Put a stock reg on there atleast you can rule out the fpr there is no need for it unless your trying to get more out of the injectors anyway in which you case stock is best. Also change your plugs they are most likely fouled from running rich. Has the car had a remap or nistune? If your located near central coast I can help you sort it out

Songs too rich, fuel burning in the exhaust, black soon, rough idle due over fueling. get a stock fpr back on it. It will run a tad higher than stock sure to the increased flow from the pump but it will be fine. Are you fouling plugs?

Changing the FPR settings doesnt increase the flow from the pump, it changes the restriction to flow from the pump. Your pump flows the same, the FPR changes the pressure (How much fuel is allowed to get through)

Guage sounds like it's in the right spot to read the fuel pressure correctly. Fuel pressure should be the same between the fuel filter and FPR. Unless your gauge is faulty as suggested?

Its a pain in the arse writing off the Galaxy S2, the swype keyboard doesn't always get it right haha. But that is what I meant. Not flow, but pressure. Due to upgrading his fuel pump, the pressure will be above stock but still within a safe limit to ensure the car runs fine.

    • Yup. You can get creative and make a sort of "bracket" with cable ties. Put 2 around the sender with a third passing underneath them strapped down against the sender. Then that third one is able to be passed through some hole at right angles to the orientation of the sender. Or some variation on the theme. Yes.... ummm, with caveats? I mean, the sender is BSP and you would likely have AN stuff on the hose, so yes, there would be the adapter you mention. But the block end will either be 1/8 NPT if that thread is still OK in there, or you can drill and tap it out to 1/4 BSP or NPT and use appropriate adapter there. As it stands, your mention of 1/8 BSPT male seems... wrong for the 1/8 NPT female it has to go into. The hose will be better, because even with the bush, the mass of the sender will be "hanging" off a hard threaded connection and will add some stress/strain to that. It might fail in the future. The hose eliminates almost all such risk - but adds in several more threaded connections to leak from! It really should be tapered, but it looks very long in that photo with no taper visible. If you have it in hand you should be able to see if it tapered or not. There technically is no possibility of a mechanical seal with a parallel male in a parallel female, so it is hard to believe that it is parallel male, but weirder things have happened. Maybe it's meant to seat on some surface when screwed in on the original installation? Anyway, at that thread size, parallel in parallel, with tape and goop, will seal just fine.
    • How do you propose I cable tie this: To something securely? Is it really just a case of finding a couple of holes and ziptying it there so it never goes flying or starts dangling around, more or less? Then run a 1/8 BSP Female to [hose adapter of choice?/AN?] and then the opposing fitting at the bush-into-oil-block end? being the hose-into-realistically likely a 1/8 BSPT male) Is this going to provide any real benefit over using a stainless/steel 1/4 to 1/8 BSPT reducing bush? I am making the assumption the OEM sender is BSPT not BSPP/BSP
    • I fashioned a ramp out of a couple of pieces of 140x35 lumber, to get the bumper up slightly, and then one of these is what I use
    • I wouldn't worry about dissimilar metal corrosion, should you just buy/make a steel replacement. There will be thread tape and sealant compound between the metals. The few little spots where they touch each other will be deep inside the joint, unable to get wet. And the alloy block is much much larger than a small steel fitting, so there is plenty of "sacrificial" capacity there. Any bush you put in there will be dissimilar anyway. Either steel or brass. Maybe stainless. All of them are different to the other parts in the chain. But what I said above still applies.
    • You are all good then, I didn't realise the port was in a part you can (have!) remove. Just pull the broken part out, clean it and the threads should be fine. Yes, the whole point about remote mounting is it takes almost all of the vibration out via the flexible hose. You just need a convenient chassis point and a cable tie or 3.
