if you dont have a cat i.e your running a straight turbo back system

Can the EPA station detect this?

Easily.

All you do is look under the car and you'll see there is no CAT.

A more 'educated' officer might pick it too.

Blade.... just get a gutted cat and you will be fine... unless they take your exhaust apart on the side of the road.

NOT good advice, esp on a public forum.

EPA have mobile inspectors and in some cases I have heard Police carrying the Probes to detect whether a working CAT is fitted.

I have also heard the fine is $10,000 not 5.

EPA will also fine you for having ANY kind of boost control be it hydraulic, pnuematic or electronic.

Having no cat or a gutted cat is just asking for trouble.

I am not a greenie, i wish our laws for cars were similar to NZ.

hmm any kind of boost control? well there has to be something that controls/limits the amount of boost stock cars can make - where is the line drawn?

few people put holes in thier vacum hose so it acts like a bleed, is it illigal to have a pin prick hole in your vacum?

this shit is annoying me. i met some friends at TGI's on friday and saw many a cop but didn't get pulled over lucking. i wasn't actually on chapel for very long though - no laps just in and out.

btw... R33's are the new VL, not skylines in general ;)

Your right!

R32 are the VH model, you know, for the people that can't afford the VL turbo :P

Yeah, but its factory. It was tested/engineered like that.

As soon as you change a part that directly alters Emissions, or a part that could affect emissions/noise in any way... then the EPA can hassle you.

That's not to say you can't hide an EBC and it's solenoid.

What they dont see dont hurt them.

Also, Dale... heard the same thing 10k fine, not a 5k one.

Its not on the spot though is it?

Like if they notice the cat aint their...do they just slap me with a 10k fine...or do they give me time to fix it and if i dont fix it within the given time i get charged?

I just have to double check on that

HOly ****!

I bought my car from the dealer, how the **** did he get a RWC on it if it doesnt have a ****ing cat!

The prick could of made me 10k poorer if it wasnt for someone pointing it out on my car...even the workshop where i had lots of work done failed to tell me :)

skyline is the new vl, no matter how much people want to deny it, its true

:spcow: You go to hell. You go to hell and you DIE!! :spcartman ... oh yeah, :usuck:

Well.. ill add to the Chapel St drama..

Coming home 3am 9/4/04 after a night at The Next Blue, meeting up with friends so i decided to take Malvern Rd to Coles. I like to steer clear of Chaps when in my car, i knew it wasnt up to roadworthy standard.. and i just got it back from repairs... she has only ever graced chapel street 2-3 times in the 2 years ive had her.

Parked in Coles away from the VL boys.. 5 seconds later or less, TMU parked behind me. I got the cop that was having a bad night obviously.. i received a minor defect for the catch can, steering wheel & parker lights... and also labelled a 'smart ass' according to the officer... i mean WTF!

Yes, Chapel nor anywhere around chapel is safe right now.. oh well shit happens!

ok so any mods that are not standard or factory are deemed as illegal?

sh*t f@##%kers! what about their (cop's) power chip that they run in their cars? im sure they cause more emissions... so where are the epa?

anyway, is a front mount cooler and a bov considered as illegal too?

FMIC is only illegal if you have ANOTHER intake mod... BOV is only illegal if it vents into the atmosphere.

GUYS,

If you want to know about the legalities of modifications please see the "Sticky thread to rule them all" at the top of this forum. There is a link to a page on vic roads website which will answer all these questions.

Cheers,

Ni.

PS. Libby... u are a smartass :D

    • Find out what RPM it was idling at with the IACV unplugged. It's very weird that the rpm didn't change at all, and then it stalled. When it stalls is it nearly like a switch off, like you've turned the engine off? Or is it more stutters and sputters and coughs to death over a few seconds? Or does the RPM just slowly keep going down and down? Have you done a test of trying to start it with the AFM unplugged? Does it still die?     If you Follow Josh's advice on using Nistune to check the voltages (which is a perfect method!) if you see anything out of wack voltage wise, THEN get the multimeter out and read the voltage directly at the sensor. If the two vary, then you're now looking for a wiring issue vs a sensor issue. So be aware, what the ECU sees, may not be what the sensor is actually saying too...
    • You very likely need to get it on a dyno and tune it. My assumption is, you've got an RB25DET tune in it, which has a different manifold, different injectors, and different cams as a minimum. What O2 sensor are you running?   When you say it runs extremely rich from idle all the way to redline, is this just free revving it you see that?
    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.
