Hi, before anyone jumps in, I have read about 20 different posts in relation to this and none of them are exactly the same as mine.

Started the car today, from first crank it had a persistant tick/click sound like tick tick tick tick and even with throttle it was there and it increase in volume & speed as the throttle increased (using the throttle cable in the engine bay)

(R33 S1 auto, stock turbo, stock inj, stock engine)

I waited a good 5mins before driving the car, opened the hood and my ear was directed towards the top right hand side of the engine bay between the turbo and the wall/flywheel. couldnt exactly pin point but it was louder right there in that corner.

At first I thought it would go away but I had some business to take care of, SO i drove the car 45mins and the click/ticking continued, was faint when driving unless I went pass a car or in a tunnel, but it was still making the noise whilst I was driving the whole time, as well as on Idle parked.

At first I thought it was the lifters but lifters usually sound deeper, then after reading i am thinking it may be a big leak in the exhaust/turbo gaskets causing the noise, as it increased with throttle as if it was controlled by the air passing thru the exhaust.

can anyone shed some light at tell me if its likely to be a leak as it made the noise in Idle and driving, no matter what rpm or speed I did. and its coming from the right side of the engine near the turbo/exhaust!

any advice would be appreciated, its possible gasket or bolts have snapped and caused a leak??????

please help, as I just got myself Z32+nistune today ready to be tuned, but cant do a tune till I sort this out! hoping its just a leak and not lifters! ( it made this noise before I changed ECUs)

thanks heaps

You couldn't have read too many threads...

Exhaust manifold gasket has blown. You'll need to replace it.

Also replace ALL manifold studs at the same time, you will likely have a few broken ones.

thanks, just wanted to be sure if it suited mine, and where do I get these parts & prices thnx

Thanks

Ordered Exhaust manifold gasket and the stud kit with all studs/washers etc, will update when they arrive and are put on, that could also explain the low power,

OH then I am getting my new nistune TUNED soon also :D happy happy!

Get the number of a stud remover ready, there is a high chance some will break. My old car, 120xxxkm, all came out smoothly. Amazingly.

How much did the parts cost you?

Mine had a similar problem, it turned out to be a loose wastegate, over time the actuator had lost its preload. Easy way to tell is to start the engine (preferably cold) and pull on the wastegate arm and see if it stop. Worked for me! :)

    • Yes, I know🙄 but the sequential is not in my budget... don't want to reduce power neither, so looks like I'm stuck in the rabbit hole🤣
    • You’ll be very upset when you bust that too not to mention the gearing totally sucks. Don’t do it.

    • So.... the K&N air box thingo was too big, ended up gifting it to a mate, well, by gifting it he actually supplied food and beer at the pub,  which was nice, as it will not sit on a shelf in the garage for the next 10 years I did trim up some of the existing stuff to neaten it all up and gave it some wrinkle paint, unfortunately it currently has a used and abused mish mash of different types of hose clamps, 4 big fat T bolt type (shit), and a few normal clamps of vairing sizes and brands, but..... only until the 6 constant tension black worm clamps that I ordered from EFI solutions turn up next week Currently the current hose clamps are triggering me hard, LOL Is this the final version, probably not, I really want just 2 silicone pieces, a straight bit of silicone from the filter to the MAF is easy and will happen as soon as I head into Just Jap tomorrow, the problematic part is a 30° silicone bend from the MAF to the TB that I can connect the engine breather from the head, I found that there are bulk head fittings for boat bilge pumps that should work, but until I can get a 30° silicone bend the alloy pipe, and the 11ty thousand hose clamps, are there for the foreseeable future 4 hose clamps are golden, 6 are grudgingly acceptable, the 8 currently holding it all together is just taking the piss    I've also ordered 60 more retaining wall blocks for the front yard, I mis-gonculated the height that was required to get above the base of the Photinia's (red robin's) that are the hedge behind the front fence, currently it is 2 blocks high, and about 1/2 a block short, so going 3 blocks high will be above the base of the red robin's, and allow some room for mulch
