I'm looking for feedback on whether to change rear LSD on r32 GTR to an aftermarket 1.5way or similar.

Car will be used "exclusively" for circuit racing/track days etc. (not road registered)

from what i've seen, its generally agreed front diff should be upgraded to 1 way or 1.5way of some sort, but it seems lots of people leave the rear standard. I'm thinking of changing the front to quaife 1.5way and whilst i'm at it, would like to know if this is a bad idea.

But Mainly, has anyone changed the rear LSD to nismo/cusco/kazz and if so was it better?

Point 1) It's not all hidden from you. Do a search.

Point 2) Quaife diffs are helical types. There is no 1/1.5/2 wayness about them.

Point 3) Generally the helocal diffs are a bloody good thing in the front, especially on a track car.

Point 4) If it is track only just man up and put a 2-way in the rear.

It's possible that they don't like you, but I wouldn't let that worry you. But seriously, your question had been asked and answered before, so a bit of passive ignoring by the crowd can serve as a lesson to use the search function just as well as the usual R31Nismoid post.

Anyway you can just shim up the rear diff if you want which is what a lot of people do when leaving it "standard", or put an aftermarket centre in.

Most people do the front with aftermarket as the Nismo etc are stronger. Last thing you want is a diff to break and take the sump and god knows what else with it.

Depends on where you want to go with costs as to what option you pick. Shimming up will cost around $300-$400 if it's in good condition. So quite cheap.

on the track, when we are talking aboput rear diff, what is the BIG difference between 1.5way and 2 way, i here 2 ways are better for drifting but WHY?

its easy to get my car into power oversteer out of tight corners, it a nice oversteer that is progressive and easy to control and it doesn't seem to snap back and is lots and lots of fun, but this gets through tyres real quick,

which one helps the car hook up out of corners better and do either of them cause understeer

depends on how many shims you put it....... mine is shimmed up with the biggest and its locked... jumps around chirps in car parks makes noises and generally attracts attention when trying to park :whistling: yes you can shim it up to different values and acheive nice through to near locker like mine.

1.5 way = locked on acc so whenever the gas is on the diff is locked....... when you depress the acc pedal the diff will unbind and return to a half locked state hence the .5 (half locked)

2 way = locked on acc and then locked on decel so it is kinda the same as a locker HOWEVER if you ajust the acc pedal you can acctually make the diff release as the tourque plates the diff arnt bound togeather, these are good for drifting because they are predictable and you are spending most of your time drifting wanting both wheels to spin a condition that unbinds the diff (stock diffs unshimmed) will stuff your corner and well your day of drifting :(

2 ways are for this reason no considered good for the street to the untrained like a locker will induce understeer, and over steer and when down gearing or decel oversteer that usually scares people.

for the GTR i would think that a 1.5 way front and a 2way in the rear would be a good setup i have driven in cars with lockers shims kaaz tomei and nismos...... my pick of the bunch the tomei .... but cost value the shimmed stock diff is great :cheers:

Any LSD, front or rear in any car will tend to increase understeer.  And the more LSD action in the diff the more it will do it.  So a 2 way is not necessarily going to cause more understeer than say a 1.5 way or a 1 way.  What matters the most is the breakaway torque at which the LSD slips.  The tighter the diff, the more understeer it gives.

Also, just a small correction to what Blitz wrote above. He said "1.5 way = locked on acc so whenever the gas is on the diff is locked....... when you depress the acc pedal the diff will unbind and return to a half locked state hence the .5 (half locked)".  What really is the case is that a 2 way offers LSD action on both accel and overrun, a 1 way diff only provides LSD action when loaded under forward acceleration.  A 1.5 way diff offers the same LSD action on forward accel, and some on trailing throttle too, just not as much as a 2 way.  And when he said "depress the acc pedal" he really meant "lift off the acc pedal".

    • You just need to remove the compressor housing, not the entire turbo. I would not be drilling and tapping anything with the housing still on anyways. 
    • So, I put my boat on a boat. First of all, I'm going to come out and say it. Why is Tasmania not considered a holy goal, an apex that all road-legal modified cars go to, to experience? This place is an absolute wonderland of titanic proportions. If people are already getting club runs for once in a lifetime 30 person cruises to Tassy then I've never seemed to see it. It is like someone replaced the entire place with an idyllic wonderland for cars, and all of the people living there with paid actors who are kind, humble, and friendly. Dear god. After doing a lap of almost all of the place I've found that it's a great way to find out all of the little things that the car isn't doing quite right and a great way to figure it all out. All in all, I drove for 4 hours a day for a week and nothing broke. I didn't even need to open the engine bay. This is by all means a great success, but it has left me with a list of things to potentially address. I also now have a 3D printed wheel fitment tool which annoyingly hasn't got any threads in it to actually assemble it. I might be able to tape it together to check the sizing I actually want to use, but it'll likely involving pulling the shocks out to properly measure travel at least at the front, and probably raise the car while I'm at it, at least in the rear. I scraped on quite a few things and I'm not sure how else to go about it. I was taking anything with a bump at what felt like 89 degree angles. And address those 10 other tasks. And wash the car. God damn it is dirty. And somehow, the weather was perfect the entire time - And because I was on the top of Mt Wellington it turns out it was very much about to freeze up there. I did something I typically never do and took some photos up there in what must have been -10 and the foggy felt like suspended ice, rather than mere fog. If you own a car in Australia, you owe it to yourself to do it.

    • Saw this replica police car based on a Mitsubishi Starion XX parked next to a 'police box' (it's literally a box) in Hirohata, Himeji City in Hyogo prefecture the other day. It's owned by Morii-san who is a local Mitsubishi Starion enthusiast. According to a local radio station blog post, he always wanted to make a police car himself based on ones he saw in his favourite Manga comics.  As it's illegal to modify a car to look like a police car and drive on the road, Morii-san tried many times to get permission from Aboshi police station headquarters nearby. They refused initially by after they got tired of that they granted him permission. However, the car can only be displayed on private property and obviously can't be registered as long as the police livery is present. The car was completed at a cost of 1.5 million yen (US$ 10,000) in addition to the car cost. A location was chosen outside Hirohata Police box where the car can easily been seen from the street. Morii-san has two other Starion road cars, both widebody GSR-VRs.
