the glass will help out a lot. but no you won't get the same quality as a newer body.

image size.

iso.

colour depth.

focusing capabilities.

dynamic range.

and more will all suffer.

It will definately look stacks better than a kit lens on the same body though.

p.s. Thanks ;)

After the Chocolate Cruise yesterday I stopped by Waragamba to see what the overflow looks like in person. Snapped a few shots but really didn't take the time I should have to set up some decent stuff. Was incredible how many people came out to see it too.

Last ones are a couple of shots from the car cruise.

cheers Pat (and everyone else giving me props) but I havent owned a DSLR since 2010. this G12 is fairly close to a DSLR tho with its manual controls.

i have a job interview today for a web programming position (just a contract, but its a start) so hopefully i can start a new fund for a new camera.

as a bonus this position could involve some photography work, even if its just taking pics of products for the website.

guess your G12 at least has a decent sized lense and you seem to know how to get the best out of it using different settings etc, i have never changed anything for a shot other than turn the flash on or off, a DSLR with full manual settings is going to be a real challenge..will be so tempted to just leave it in auto like i do with the little instasnap thing i have.

Someone last night recommended i get a Canon D series for best quality and i would be able to use it for videography as well, problem is like you Jay...funds..maybe i should wait till the tax return comes in and get the best one i can afford.!

Haha, she is my wife. Been playing around with the 80s look so taking a few random photos to test it on. When I said "crystal clear", I ment- those photos from the point and shoot is amazing in quality.

Been a while since my last post...

Tops man, love that photo.

Another 80s attempt... They are all using different methods to get the results... trying to find one I am completely happy with... I look at them and think they look good, then seconds later absolutely hate it and vice versa.

First time uploading as only got camera yesterday and wanting to get into some automotive photography (as a hobby!) two quick shots (please don't laugh as its my first play with a digital slr!)

stunning work, you might even be able to make my 33 look good with a silhouette shot like that, keep em coming

which model did you go with? solid state? no-ones laughing at you in here mate, you go to the wasteland for that. I like the second shot more, slightly artier than the standard engine bay shot.

Great start mate. Welcome to the manual world.

The last photo is as is, but the other two of my wife had a new action I'm trying to create for a cross between modern and 80s look.

Richie - Personally not a fan of making an image looks like from the 80s. My style is more modern vibrant pics. So maybe thats why I cant see it working. I do like the PP you did to your wife.

Just in the past 2 or 3 days I have been doing more black and whites. Well just mucking around in PP.

Nice shot there fongy. Are those fake lights put in PP on top of the image? Eitherway nice lighting on the car.

Peter - the only way to learn is to keep taking photos :) Keep at it mate.

patty - hahah im sure you know the answer to your question lol.

Great photos as usual man!

When I look at some of those 80's looking photos, I can just sit here and look at them for hours. The vibrant photos, even though they are amazing, I find myself flicking through them quicker. I do keep both copies though (standard and 80s) so it is available for whomever to select from. But I do find myself just sitting there staring on end - I'm sure you know what I mean here.

On a different note, I've been asked to shoot some weddings and photos here and there, and starting to gain interest from people I don't know. I enjoy photography more than IT to be honest, so I thought, why not make a website to help transition? http://www.richardgrainger.com.au/ - I've been building this website from the ground up, completely from scratch. Still a few things here and there needed to be done, but I thought I'd share it with you guys before anyone else :) Only closest family/friends have seen this website so far.

To me its black and white photos. I can stare at it all day long. But everyone has a different style and if clients like the 80s style then you should cater to them and market them. There are thousands of wedding photographers but if you can cater yourself to a particular market/target then you will be set. But keep at it and dont let our comments keep you away from making a style.

For me I like to see vibrant modern pictures so my opinion might not be suited. Its good your giving the client two choices. But in the end its double processing. Once you become a full-time wedding photographer you will realise how available your time is.

Anyways enough rambling.. Your website is coming along nicely :) Maybe the menus at the top could be changed a little?

Messy hair is messy:

i think this is the better of the two personally. although, the longer leading line (station platform) in the other one works well. shot in landscape format would have worked well to emphasize the bend in the track.

went out for a bit tonight...

gah, they really need to do some weeding :P spewing my camera has a 15 second exposure limit. probably should have sat around stacking 20 or so pics to get star trails, but would have got bored.

next time im taking my gumboots, lol. not 100% on this one, got a mix of different light in it so the color is a bit wak down the bottom.

those are great shots guys, something about the gorgeous girl in your shot Siddr...Im not a betting man but if i was i would put all my money on her having ample boobs. Yeah i know, real classy.

anyway thanks for the advice Jay, not sure the landscape format would have made a difference with my tiny camera but i WILL try it out next time im at a similar stop to see if it makes any impression on the final result.

how much spelunking do you do in those caves? gotta take balls that, no fear of getting caught by a flash flood or giant rat ala' fallout3?

your right, it might not work, but experimentation is the key. sometimes its the things you think wont work that actually do.

the 'cave' here is just a big tunnel under a road. so no risk of getting caught out really.

    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
