Im just trying to work out whats the best way to go. 260rs or RS4S then wreck a GTR for the driveline.

I think a 500awkw RB30 stag would be a awesome sleeper

Both RS4S and 260RS have the beefed up (R33GTR driveshafts) vs the auto versions. Both have R33 GTR gearboxes.

Do you know what head you want to use?

If you want to use the 26 head then I think a 260RS would have all the ancillaries already there including the loom and all the gear to stay with twins.

I don't think you can go too far wrong either way.

RIPS engines are cheap enough and ready to roll with the cradle and oil pickups sorted. If you went a neo 25 head the cheapest RIPS bottom end would come up a treat around 9:1 comp (very roughly) with the smaller chamber volume of this head. Plus the neo head has VCT which is handy.

As long as it is tuned well, RIPS have shown they will hold plenty of power even using stock pistons.

Plus there are plenty of local builders that can build something to suit your needs and budget.

Yeah sure you could slap together a barnyard banger for around 2, but if you want a bullet proof high powered 30, with all bolt-ons and associated parts, you looking at huge dollars!

Not just the engine block & head, & internal parts but, dont forget gaskets & bolts & bearings & seals & machining, then all the other stuff like, manifolds, turbos, wastegate, bov?, intercooler, piping, lines & hoses, radiator, injectors, fuel pumps & tanks, computer & tuning, exhaust, coil packs & plugs, oil pumps, oil coolers, fluids, sump mods, awd mods, complete driveline, brakes, suspension, wheels & tyres....etc It all adds up fast, you cant just slap a 30 block under a stock 25 or 26 & expect to have a monster!

Anything over 200kw on stock 30na pistons is a hand grenade, for the sake of 2-3k you might as well go forged! As for results & reliability you really do get what you pay for!

If I had an unlimited budget, yeah a 26 head with a HKS valcon II Vmax (VCT) setup on an RB34 stroker, with twin 3037s on EtOH, would be wild, but then I would need a car worthy of it (ie: R34vspec with a cage), in a stag would be suicide lol! So unless I win lotto, I will have to be content with what Im building (which is still awesome none the less)!

Its easy to get caught up in the excitement of it, which is ok, but just prepare to get wallet raped! Honestly ask yourself if its what you really want & is it worth what it takes to get there? If that answer is yes, then be happy with your decision and never NEVER look back!

I have made 475rwkw from my 26/30 thru a auto already so I know the costs involved. If my car was manual it would be making 530+

As for saying anything over 200kw from stock 30na pistons is a hand grenade that all comes down to the tune. My mate has a single cam 30 thats making over 300rwkw and had done for a while. The vl boys have been pushing stock parts pretty hard

This just isn't true. There are so many results out there using stock parts that make a lot more power than you are saying. It comes down to tuning. Keep them away from det they will live a long happy productive life.

I agree that costs add up quickly which is the very reason I haven't gone down the RB30 route....yet. There are always hidden costs but we aren't telling Rob anything he doesn't already know.

I hinted in an earlier post that you'd be well aware of the costs involved, but for some reading this thread, may not be so informed or experienced!

If I strapped a T51r to my 25/30 it would make over 500awkw reliably also, but Im using a GT3040 for a neck snapping 350 (it is a street car after all; albeit over engineered)!

As for the NA pistons, yeah 200 is abit on the conservative side, but from an engineering perspective 20yr old cast pistons designed for 80'ish rwkw is not what Id call strong & up to the task at hand! By handgrenade, I mean your taking a gamble, bit like the stock oil pump, sure it might work for a while, but some day be it 5min or 5yrs, will disintegrate with catastrophic consequences! Is it worth the risk?

Even with brand new big dollar parts things still fail. I think on calaisturbo one of the big name vl cars lost a 3.2 stroker on the dyno.

I lost a brand new engine from my previous mechanic not being able to read "in and out" on my oil cooler relocation kit the result was a bent crank and stuffed bearings.

My 33 would have made more power if I had a better exhaust, 3.5" just isnt enough...

No shit this isn't true..Rb30NA pistons have made way over 400rwkw time and time and time again, and thats in RB30's, let alone

the stack of 9 and 10 sec 4 cyl motor these have been fitted to over the last 20yrs..lol, i mean there daily driven E85 vls with na pistons that run high 9's and have done yrs of service and they are still going.

Anyway..if your going auto, better budget $4000 at least for a built Re401B..and even then they have a 350rwkw rating..plus they are in a heavy car so that won't be good for them, so maybe a KEAS RE403a with 4WD conversion..more money...lol

If i was you guys i'd save my money..build a nice 300 ishawkw stocky RB25, and save the heartbreak, because i have a crystal ball and it tells me that you go chasing big power in one of these it will end it tears and be of the road half the time..

cheers

if i did get one id like to have auto. i miss my old T51R KAI and one on a stag would turn heads.

You'll need another auto then..i smashed built RE boxs to pieces 6-7 yrs ago in a car that weighs 400kg less than a stag(weight and revs kill autos) and it had a GT4294 aka a T51r with different design rear turbine wheel...the way boost comes on so hard will smash 2nd gear hub to pieces..you'd get a day or so out of it..i got 2..

    • The sodium acetate, mixed with citric acid, doesn't actually buffer each other. Interestingly though, if you used Sodium Acetate, and acetic acid, THAT becomes a buffer solution. Additionally, a weak acid that can attack a metal, is still a weak acid that can attack a metal. If you don't neutralise it, and wash it off, it's going to be able to keep attacking. It works the same way when battery acid dries, get that stuff somewhere, and then it gets wet, and off it goes again breaking things down. There's a reason why people prefer a weak acid, and it's because they want TIME to be able to be on their side. IE, DIY guys are happy to leave some mild steel in vinegar for 24 hours to get mill scale off. However, if you want to do it chemically in industry, you grab the muriatic acid. If you want to do it quicker at home, go for the acetic acid if you don't want muriatic around. At the end of the day, look at the above thumbnail, as it proves what I said in the earlier post, you can clean that fuel tank up all you want with the solution, but the rust that has now been removed was once the metal of the fuel tank. So how thin in spots is your fuel tank getting? If the magazine on the left, is the actual same magazine as on the right, you'll notice it even introduces more holes... Well, rust removal in general actually does that. The fuel tank isn't very thick. So, I'll state again, look to replace the tank, replace the fuel hanger, and pump, work out how the rust and shit is making it past the fuel filter, and getting into the injectors. That is the real problem. If the fuel filter were doing its job, the injectors wouldn't be blocked.
    • Despite having minimal clothing because of the hot weather right now, I did have rubber gloves and safety glasses on just in-case for most of the time. Yes, I was scrubbing with my gloves on before, but brushing with a brush removes the remaining rust. To neutralize, I was thinking distilled water and baking soda, or do you think that would be overkill?
    • You can probably scrub the rust with a toothbrush or something. After you get the rust off flush well with water to neutralize and you will probably want to also use a fuel tank sealer to keep it from rusting again.
    • The sodium citrate solution is designed to buffer the citric acid to keep it from attacking metal quite so much, the guy that came up with that recipe did a ton of testing on how much metal loss occurs over time and it's nothing crazy unless you forget about it for months:
    • Ohhh I see lol To be honest the main reason why I wanted to start modding is because of a business trip to Japan and Indonesia. I saw many cool and modded cars all throughout in these countries, especially Japan. I myself am of Chinese+Japanese nationality and when living in china (never lived in Japan js my dad side lol) I remember staring at these cars pass by with their loud tacky exhausts and insane wide body kits. And when I went back to Japan, I got even more invested even asking people about their cars and why they modded. Most gave similar answers to what you said but funny enough one guy just said that he saw the need for speed movie being filmed once in Tokyo I think near Shibuya Crossing and got inspired to tune and mod. After that I just started to fantasize on owning a car like that. Also tbh I prefer the R32 over the R34 it's just the R34 is more iconic lol (also apparently better aftermarket support than the R32) and my only goal really is just to make the car mine and make it fun to drive. As much as I love my Cayenne it's pretty bland to drive. Sure the interior is nice and pretty, gives you attention yada yada but I've wanted to experience what it is like to have a car that is truly yours. I suppose thats the goal so far. Haha if you find where I'm from, then sure. Ill help you out on your next "financial decision"
