i just tried a set of Winmax Sport pads from BEL Garage recently. Works very well on track, with no fade in ~ 10 laps of late braking. very quiet on the street, no squeel at all (except right after a trackday, but that's normal performance pads, and even then, only for a day). highly recommended.. they only lose out to comparable Endless SSS, etc pads in initial pedal feel when cold with light braking. less than half the price of Endless / Project Mu tho, so very good value.

Thanks for your post. Might explain why the Winmax pads are so popular. If they stop the noise they will be worth every cent!

I think this thread needs updating. A track day fixed mine for good but now I've got new pads on (bendix ultimates again) the squeal is back and worse. New slotted rotors at the same time.

I'm just trying to understand Sydneykids post a bit here. The pads came chamfered straight out of the box...

Right... down to the garage I go.

I guess he thought they might not be chamfered out of the box. I fixed my prob with Ferodo 2500 pads and DBA 5000 discs, which were shrieking at pain threshold dbas, by going to solid discs...silent...Tried Lucas organics and the 5000s on and the squeal came back but at about 1/10th volume. Of course the performance of the 2500s is gone, too. You could try Mintex stick on shims, it might help a bit.

I'm still waiting for a set of Winmax pads from Bel. Reminds me I must email them and see if they will ever come in.

My car is off the road at present with some radiator/oil cooler changes but soon to be finished and then I'll get back on the case.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

regards

I have been just bitten by this problem after a r32 brake upgrade. dba400 r33 gtst calipers. I have noticed that if it gets really bad I need to stick it in reverse. This seems to fix it for a little bit. Damn if racebrakes rb74's are "low dust, low noise". 10 k's after the upgrade rims are black and complaining like a girl. I guess every 10k's we need to jam it in revese.

Funny, my setup with Comp 9's on the front with R33 calipers squeal like all hell, but the same pads on a mates R33, dont make any noise at all.....doesn't make sense

I think finding a cure for brake noise is hard, because everyone's cars a differant and experience differant driving conditons and temperatures, but if anyone finds a fix, let me know :P

Chris

I notice my EBC Red Stuff Ceramics have a ruberised shim molded to the pad... maybe the stuff they are using these days means you cant just throw your shims away.

The shims are just soft metal to dampen the high frequency vibration.

Slip the pads out, use as a template to cut a shim from a can that had your fav drop in. This will stop it if it can be stopped...

Also there should be an anti rattle clip on the back of the caliper.

Hope this helps

TT

Could you tell me more about the anti rattle clip please. Is this on the back of the caliper and how do I recognise it, or is it a kind of corner shim which goes on the corner of the actual pad plate which is what I think you mean?

Either way what should I tell the brakes shop to get this clip?

Thanks

edit...

thought I should ask whether your EBC RED Ceramics squeal or not?

The clip is on the outer radius of the caliper. It is held in place by the two long steel pins ~ 5mm diam that go through the outer radius from side to side and are held in with cotter pins. The clip sits under the pins and is squeezed against the outer edge of the pad backing plates. It's no different to the standard ones other than the shape. Re a previous thread I don't think that Brembo make anti squeal shims. Mintex make universal stick on ones. As per my previous thread changing from 5000 to 4000 discs cured the squeal with Ferodo 2500 pads and no shims. Quiet as a church mouse.

Show it to a brake shop, they'll tell you if you have them or not.

As I am sure everybody in this tread is like me and is sick and tired of the brake squeal problem. I encountered this problem when I recently upgraded my r32 gts-t hardware to r33 gts-t hardware with racebrakes RB74, and DBA 4000 rotors. Every where I called said that it was normal for this brake setup to make “some noise”, some noise? For the people with the really bad squeals I feel for you as I had a really bad one too (about 95dB, and that’s a little noise). Now I decided to take things into my own hands to find that my problem was fixable. As chris32 has said everybody has a different setup and has the squeal for different reasons. If you want to fix this problem you have to understand it first. Jack the car up and undo 4 bolts, 2 clips and 2 screw type things, and have a look. What we need to do here is find some remedies to common problems.

- Have a look at the rotors are they really shinny (glassed), machine them.

- Is there dark spots on the rotors (heat spots) machine them.

- Is there cracks on the rotors (replace them)

- Have a look at the pad surface are they smooth (sand paper them, or replace)

- Are the pads worn unevenly (i.e. only some of the pistons working. rebuild)

- Are the pads gone (there sometimes is a metal wear indicator) replace

- Are the four shims in place (two solid, two with groves, if not put them in)

- Have you got some lubricant between the shims and the pads ($12 from super cheap)

- I am sure there are more that people can add

Now the first thing you will notice when you put a wheel brace near the rims is that they chime like bells. This is the reason why the squeal like a pig if there is any reason for them to. Once you have had a look report back to the forum with fixes and the hardware you have.

Car: r32 gts-t 4door

Rotors: dba 4963

Capilers: r33 gts-t stamped nissan

Pads: Racebrakes RB74

Problem: very very loud near stoped (>40km/h)

Fix: Installed the four shims that the shop took out, added dyna grip disc brake squeal free

Results: pedal seems the same if anything it is a little firmer, but same pressure results in a minor reduction in brakeing force (barely noticable). No noise

    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
