S1 Tappets

Hi all, do s1 Stagea rsfours have hydraulic tappets or solid ones?

s1 stagea motors are the same spec as a s2 r33

s2 stagea = r34

thanks guys, been told different things, but was sure they were hydraulic. Anyone know how to cure them tapping, did oil and filter change today but not driven much since.

what weight are you running?

10w40 would be the go, Gulf western oils are pretty detergent heavy so running some of that at 5000km intervals should eventually free it up

otherwise you can do what i did to my 31

4 litres of cheapy GW 20w50 (~$13)

2 x Nulon engine oil flush

Dump current oil (save it if you want and put it back in after)

Insert cheap oil + both oil flush bottles

Run for 5 mins at idle, do not drive it!!!

lift the revs to 2-3000 rpm for 20-30 seconds

idle for 5 mins

lift the revs

etc... do it so its running for around 20 mins

dump the flushing oil, change the filter, put new/previous oil back in

Right tried everything still tapping, should i replace them? any suggestions,or should i upgrade anything while i'm taking bits off? What would you guys recommend?

U sure it is not ur injectors making the noise?

You need to diagnose the issue accurately before you pull out lifters and clean them.

Quick update, was the tappets, took it into the garage and they put some heavy duty flush thru, then new oil, filter and treatment went in, amazing the difference it has made.

yeah me too, it's amazing how much the whole engine has quietened down. The stuff they use is made by a company called Forte, not sure if it's just a UK product but highly recommend it.

Nulon make a tappet quieting product

The retail version is different to the one supplied to mechanics tho, if the 31 needs it I go to an ultra tune and ask them to get a bottle in for me, usually works out at about $10 anyway but the bottle says "not for retail sale" or something like that
