HELP!!! defected again and first EPA.........

Recommended Posts

Since driving the Skyline - 'the copmagnet' so many yrs and usual practice of pull over by police. This time I've got $165 fine, the yellow sticker and EPA. Shit!! EPA...

This is the first time cops told me that the EPA will contact me and inspect my vechicle. I search the forum about the EPA and found out most of the skyliner got EPA test was the noise one. (also found most of the skyliners got EPA in this forum were in Victoria) :) ...

My point is the cops said the EPA will inspect my computer, AFC, booster, turbo timer and HID. They haven't said about the noise but I think will inspect also. So what EPA will do and what I can do about it??

For the yellow sticker, can someone borrow the cat back exhaust or the stock pipe for the BOV to me. Thanks alot.

Sorry about my poor english, but hope U guys can understand.

Oh yea and if u got a POD filter u might get some trouble

:bs!: have you even been for an EPA?

you can actually leave the pod on, or an aftermarket intercooler on, but not both. There is plenty of previous discussion on this, and many have been to the mcleod testing centre for more than just noise (including me when i was in melb). don't stress too much, just return your car as much as possible to stock (or be clever), and you should be right.

A pod is not going to make your car 90db on its own! or even make hardly any difference to the final exhaust noise, which is where the microphone sits when they do the actual test,.

and the EPA tests for EMISSIONS not ADR's .. that part is the cops job (supposedly, if they actually knew what they were checking for).

The EPA couldn't give two shits whether you had an aftermarket steering wheel or not, or even whether you're pod was made from paper mache' - as long as the emissions at the tail end were within guidelines.

thanks for the reply, I think the photo can show what's the pipe I need. Did Bunnings can bend the pipe for me?

Inside the photo also show my filter, it secure on the engine bay, is that pass the test? I know it has the 'sucking' noise but don't think it over 90dB.

When the cops following me, I tell my gf to hide my hand controller. after been pull over, they look inside my car and the cops said the 'computer' I think which is the SAFC they saw.

Putting the car in stock is a headache. I don't have ECU, exhaust, filter in standard. I've only got the stock BOV. So I need U guys to help. Can someone borrow the exhaust or ECU for me to pass the VicRoad and EPA?

By the way, HID is same as Xenon, because it is a aftermarket one, so they bother of my headlight as well.

If you are getting sent to an EPA testing facility (i.e Macleod etc) then you need to make sure that a few things in your car are fixed. Firstly dB's - 90's the limit. When they test your car make sure they do it at like 3500, when i went down the dipstick was trying to test my car at like 5,000 revs. I had read up about EPA tests before going down and i asked the guy what the hell he was doing. My stock exhaust registered 85 dB. I told the guy hes testing it at the wrong rev range, i think gtr's get tested at about 4800 or so. So watch out for this. The guy before me in a skyline r33 failed his EPA noise test by like 2dB and i bet the guy jibbed him the same way. Emissions - they chuck a probe up your exhaust so make sure nothing is changing the emissions - best bet is to chuck on a stock exhaust, make sure you have an intact CAT aswell. No boost controllers or ECU's because these change your emissions obiviously. When i went down they didn't check side panels etc looking for ECU's - if you can lean out the fuel ratios on the the ECU so you can pass the emissions. Air filters and intercoolers - you are allowed one or the other. Best bet is to just chuck on a stock air box.

You never said what car you have? Different parts for different cars, do you need 33 parts or 34 parts? I may be able to help you with a nice quiet exhaust if you have a 34.

I also have a stock34 airbox, both these parts wont fit 33.

A POD is not going to be ANYWHERE near 90db and EPA dont look at PODS for noise, as MR.KOFFI AHMED said they are concerned about Emissions - "Environment" Protection Authority! The pod will be fine if everything else is ok. DB meters are more sensitive to low frequencies and pods do not create low freqs.

Anyhow have a winfield [gtr] :P

When the cops following me, I tell my gf to hide my hand controller. after been pull over, they look inside my car and the cops said the 'computer' I think which is the SAFC they saw.

well for a start, why do you need an SAF-C if you've got a PFC?

thats just making it more obvious and attracting for the Police to pick on you.

Once to put the stock ECU back in etc... dont bother putting in the SAF-C. You wont get hassled as much either with luck.

you my friend need to attain an EPA emergency kit.

The kit basically have every stock part that comes off your car, so you can put it back on when you visit the wonderful people at the EPA station.

Also, any boost controllers turbo timers etc. Take them out of the car.

Dont think you can hide them, as the EPA have been known to take parts off your dash/kick panels if they suspect something

Thanks guys, lots of imformation I received. I will take notice of the noice test.

Elad, my skyline is R33 GTST, so thanks your help first. But still I need someone to borrow me the exhaust or the pipe.

I know it is strange, but when the car came from Japan, it already got PFC and the SAFC. I don't know why the Japanese owner want to do that, but good for me instead.

more question, before I go to the EPA, I just unplugged the unit of the booster and turbo timer and leave the wiring in the car, is that possible? car still can move? I know if unplugged the SAFC the car won't start.

not sure dude. I think they will still see it and notice it. but i guess it comes down to how much they want to argue. i mean do they know exactly what a boost controller looks like?

I could paint my stock boost controller black and gold and put an apexi sticker on it and would they say its a non epa compliant mod cos its a boost controller? would running the boost at 7psi max pass you for the EPA test as this is what stock r33 gtst runs.

pawson" check the for sale section, there are a few guys selling rb25det's and stripping parts from front cuts and other odds and ends, your bound to find one who has this pipe. the pipe is for the stock intercoooler so its pretty useless and not worth much for anyone else really. if not check out http://www.upimports.com.au/UPI_Parts/ these guys are moorabbin (melbourne) and are bound to have stock 33 intercooler piping

good luck

In simple words from what people have needed to go through..if you have to go to "Macleod" to get the car fully checked out, you might as well return your car to stock for it...no bleed valves no controllers no aftermarket ecu's the exhaust has to be legal. If it just a fix it and go to vic roads for them to check it out then it shouldnt be too much of a problem.

    • Hi all,  I am in the market for an R200 longnose diff out of a Z31 300ZX, or S12 RSX, DR30 skyline, or similar, in a 3.9 ratio.  Preferably a late model one with the M12 crownwheel bolts.  The only easy to find advert for one of these was my ad back in 2007 when I sold it on this forum.  I sold the diff as I had sold the car it goes to, but as it turns out, after 18 years I got the car back late last year, so now I'm looking for the diff !  If anyone knows where to find a longnose R200 LSD with the M12 crownwheel bolts, drop me a line at [email protected] - Bonus paid if soomeone comes up with the original diff (stranger things have happened !).  Cheers   Ben D
    • Hi everyone, I used to post here a bit from 2004-2013, when I owned various Nissans, in particular my S12 RSX gazelle, which was sold in 2007.  As luck would have it, after an 18 year hiatus, the car found its way back to me last year, and over the past 11 months I have had the pleasure of restoring it with my kids.  One thing that I am after in particular is a 3.9 ratio R200 LSD for it.  I actually sold the one out of the car here back in 2007 , and it would be incredible if I could track down who I sold it to, so I can see how they have progressed over the years (and to be honest, to see whether I can get the diff back !).  Anyways, hi all and let me know "where are the R200 Longnose diffs all at these days ?  Cheers Ben D
    • Arms will be the same as the G35 or 350Z, but as above, there was a change in the lower control arm where it connects to the ball joint.  That said, you can remove the ball joint cone from your old ball joints and fit them to the new ball joints.  To be honest, I didn't think the ball joints themselves were different. The main ball joint is a bit awkward to replace, you really need to remove the steering knuckle to press out the old one.  Some people have used tools to remove it in place, but it just seemed too hard to get to. If you are going to press out/in that ball joint, then you may as well just replace the bushings in the LCA and the compression rod.  You can buy the compression rod bushing from Nissan, but the LCA bushes, you will need to go aftermarket. Much cheaper than buying the whole arm.
    • Ha, well, it's been.... a bit of a journey. Things have taken much longer than I'd hoped. I'll probably put up a thread at some stage. Hopefully soon. The car's not done any kms since my update in June though, put it that way.
    • Here's the chart for fuel pressure vs. current draw, assuming your base fuel pressure is 3 bar and you run like 0.5bar boost on WOT, you should only momentarily hit 9amps here and there. (Ignore my prev post, I cannot read a chart these days it seems)
