I installed a Bosch 910 pump over the weekend, car was running fine after a test drive.

However on the way to work this morning the car stalled at the first intersection, and wouldnt start again.

After getting it home I pulled everything out to see what the problem was. I found the pickup had fallen off and was somewhere in the tank. I couldnt feel the bugger anywhere so decided to give up and let a pro do it.

So I get a call from the workshop today and they tell me that I shouldn't have used it internally, and that it was very dangerous?

There are allot of people using these intank, is it safe to use?

I was running a Bosch 910 in-tank up till the end of last week. It had been in there for almost 4yrs and came out still in tip-top shape. It's now going into an RX7 turbo circuit car. The only reason it was replaced was due to it not handling the demand placed on it.

How is a Bosch unit any less safe than the stock pump is replaces? They both require power and earth connections and unless I'm mistaken they both have the same kind of construction. If it was an unsafe practice then A LOT of workshops are up for serious legal issues!

Mine has been 8 months i think.. i think you stuffed the pickup mate :D its got to go in exactly the same position as stock and erm, not fall off. How much fuel you have in there?? Even if the pickup has fallen off, if you have 1/4 of a tank it should just suck straight in as when the tank is full its fully submerged

Shouldn't be too hard to find.. during daylight with a torch could see inside most of the tank. But i do have skinny arms. ]

Did you use a hose on the end to extend the pickup and get the placement right? Some rubber can go funny with petrol and expand, releasing the item - hence the hose clamps tight as buggery

Had about 1/3 a tank and yep I had some hose on the end (was using your pic's as guide) and that was still attached when I pulled everything out. But come to think of it, it was a little out of shape, so maybe I bought the wrong hose... Silly me!

I didnt want do it up to tight as the end of the pickup was plastic and didnt want to break it with hose the clamp.

Dunno whether to try again with the Bosch (and your help) or get a GTR pump?

Hmm, well I'm confused?

I have an '0 580 254 910'.

He said I need an '019', for in tank applications, and this was apparently confirmed by someone at Bosch too.

Many things aren't used for their intended use.. but work fine.

Many have no issues, and many follow the manufacturers guidelines a little too heavily. More to the point, they probably would prefer you to pay the extra for the intake one.

Many people say "yes" and many say "no"... but whatever works works. It worked for me, and seem a few others on the forums here.

But if you feel safer with a GTR or the intended "intank" one, change it for one of those.. i'll help you install, now you know how to do it that is most of the work done.

The issue here i don't think was the pump failed due to being "intank" or not at all anyhow, it was the pickup falling off.

p.s. i'll buy your stock pump in a month or so too :D

Apparently earlier pump models e.g. where not supposed to be used in tank at all. But newer revision models are fine for in tank applications.

The workshop was going off old info from previous models apparently? Or maybe there just covering there ass? Anyhooo I'm sticking with the 910. But my pickup is lost in tank blackhole :)

No luck unfortunately, I've jammed my skinny little arms all the way down as far as I can, the workshop couldn't get it either.

They said I can get Bosch specific pickup that will fit on their pump correctly anyway ;)

    • thanks for the advice on the box... i was thinking the 6 speed was better for cruising on the highway but on closer inspection and comparison the Rb 5 speed box was not too different...  So the choice is going to be the RB25 box... if I can save up and find one at the right price  
    • Thanks Matt, yes that's what i am aiming for. Just going to apply the right voltage and grounds to the dash connector. Hence my search for these pins... any chance you know if these pins are in the same spot as the ones on the S15 Dash connector? as mentioned above on page 8?
    • Yes, unfortunately that's the one. Signal was noisy to begin with; after driving once and looking back at the logs I saw pressure constantly swinging between 0-200psi, or staying at 0 randomly for a few seconds. There's a lot of good sensors that share the same look and feel, so don't presume they're all bad. I bought mine for 20$ off Amazon and I should have read the reviews prior, as it's clear they're junk.  I purchased a lowdollerr motorsports sensor.
