hye guys just purchased my 1996 series 2 r33 gtr vspec, im new to the nissans as i had a supra and know all about the 2jz but nothing about the rb26 lol so my car is white its a vspec following mods are

3inch exhaust blitz

hks boost controller

hks turbo timer

hks pod filters

boost setup from .7 to .9

ok now the problems im starting to see are the folwing

1)when you start the car after its already warmed up it starts and then drops dramatically in idle to about 2-300rpm hunts between there for 3-5seconds and then idles up at 900rpm sometimes its revs up between 900 - 1100rpm back and forth hunting and then when driven seems to be fine, the boost hold at .7 or .9 so i dont think a boost leak? but when its in vacuum i can see the needle going up and down a little bit...

2)when going in 1st and 2nd with foot lightly under acceleration it seems to backfire and missfire, and then when going full throttle the car will rev fine and then missfire/backfire through the rpm range and it looks to me like the car doesnt want to go past 5000rpm in 3rd or 4th i really have to push it but boost hold at .9

it seems its running alot rich because ive been told it spits out black smoke when driving and i can actually smell the fuel from the exhaust while driving, then all of a sudden the car starts to go hard and actually pushes and goes fine through the rpm range with no missfires or backfires?

any keen to lend a hand???

ok sweet car has done 107000kms the recent owner changed the timing belt and the sparkplugs?

also one more issue i just remembered, these brembo brakes are meant to brake pretty hard i imagine? well on this car i have 10.5 inch rims all round with 275 tires and when braking it doesnt have a stop it just continues to slow down like some sort of brake fade? example when going about 30-40kms and u hit the brake hard i imagine it should stop on the spot? well it just slows down it doesnt just have that hard braking power, recent owner said he changed the pads without machining disc i imagine these are throw out disc can only be used once? well im not sure but for a gtr im sure if u hit the brake as hard as u can the car should come to a quick stop? this one doesnt

Do you have an aftermarket ECU ?

- Take it in for a check tune

- Have the rotors machined and system bled (while their there I'm sure they will pick up any anomolies.

use trusted mechanic/shop.

First thing I do with any cars new to me is a major service (unless I have evidence it has had one recently).

Edit: Brembo's are good calipers BUT good braking requires more than just good calipers. Pads, Fluid, Rotors and bleed.

107,000kms - true or not it indicates Major Service should have occured and should have paperwork for it with your GTR.

2) sounds like AFMs, look up the soldering fix or try a set of known working ones.

Do you know what brake pads are on there? As mentioned, machine the rotors, full fluid flush and probably look at getting new pads (QFM HPX at a mimimum, I would get A1RM as GT-Rs are 'heavy').

thankyou guys much better then the supra forums they mock your supra and mock you a a person for not being as smart as them

i had a 500hp supra im a licensed mechanic but not in performance as its a different field just a general mechanic, im very keen on the 2jz but thought id test the rb26s man so ill do all those test and get back to you guys in the mean time if anyone lives in lugarno nsw sydney area and wants to come have a look and knows what there on about and knows the gtr 33s ver well and wouldnt mind coming to have a look at this then please let me know on inbox cheers thanks guys

regards

check to see what condition your blow off valve is in if its been dicked with and venting to atmo or leaking can cause these problems

    • I seem to the be only person that is using a Haltech 2500 on an NA motor, I've installed a Bosch DBW throttle body to the OEM intake manifold and am having problems maintaining AFR even with the wideband o2.  It will run extremely rich at idle and up to redline, but under load it will go extremely lean in the 20s and i'm essentially having to rev it over 4k and feather the clutch to get it up to speed.  I've read a few other threads of about the butterfly, it seems removing the vacuum to it is supposed to have it remain open, i've noticed no difference under 4k with the vacuum line to it plugged.  I'm hoping someone here has had luck using the NA manifold with Haltech, and if they happen to have a tune for it.
    • I don't know any details, but I really wouldn't be surprised if they do it as a LHD only version, at least initially.
    • Thanks for the replies everyone. Definitely a coolant push. Oil catch can is empty and always has been. As the engine is out now I'll be having a good look over things. I do have some detonation on the piston tops from a trigger issue back about 5 years ago. I felt it and shut off then bought a new ecu and changed the trigger. Never been an issue since. It never hurt the power, its made almost 80hp more since that incident but I will pull the bearing caps to take a look. If the bearings are damaged I will do a bottom end refresh. Head is being re conditioned at the moment and the block will be cleaned and checked to ensure it's flat. I'll go with a kameari gasket and see how it ends up. The other thing I'm not super keen on is the cylinder colours. I suspect this is from the inlet manifold. The plan will be to put it back together, retune and then stick a plazmaman billet inlet on it and retune. I'm happy with the power, if it makes a little more, then great, but I would rather just make everything more efficient at this stage.
    • Maybe they'll look to do a bunch of presales to help inject some cash fast for their financial issues...
    • Does it also misfire equally when revving?   Josh is very correct in what you should do. The coilpack harness wiring loom itself is a known problem due to its age and the number of heat cycles it has gone through. Throwing parts at a vehicle to diagnose the issue isn't a smart or good way to do it. Secondly, you may have a bad coil pack, you pop replacements in, they fix that issue, but messing with the harness breaks it, so the issue persists. So now you think "well it wasn't the coil packs" and have to continue chasing your tail, potentially swapping back in your shit coil packs and returning the good ones (yes, I've seen people do this because 'it wasn't the problem' and they want to save money). And suddenly, you've got two issues with the same symptoms...   Diagnose, don't use the spare parts shotgun.
