Hey guys, I'm devo right now..

My 34 gtt has be running like shit the past couple of weeks, till the other morning it got worse, I was sitting at the lights then it suddenly started running worse then noticed that it was pouring white smoke out of the exhaust.. literally pouring!! I got so many stares haha

Took it to the tuner last night, they looked at it today and noticed oil ontop of cylinder 5 once spark plug was out. The bloke thinks it's valve stem seals or rings :( it runs fine till the engines fully warned up then it pours the smoke out! Need help guys! What's your thoughts?? Cheers

The amount of oil in the cylinder would have masked the comp test results.

If its a failed oil control ring, the extent of failure won't be known until the piston & rod are removed.

Be careful, as a worst case scenario, piston can pickup on the liner & break the piston, liner & your engine.

You could inspect & replace valve stem seals.

First step, I would be boreoscoping the cylinder with the piston at BDC to check the liner for evidence of the piston picking up.

Sorry, re-read OP. I'd bet on the valve stem seal failing from possibly a worn valve & guide, as per the symptoms of running like shit the last couple of weeks.

How many k's on the engine? Boost levels? Type of oil used?

And if it's valve stem seals shouldn't it smoke on start up? It's only starts pouring smoke once warm.

Yes & no. It will be more pronunced when warm due to the increased clearance between the valve stem & guide.

When does it start running like crap? When the smoke starts?

A mate of mine had an R33 GTST. He bought it running rough. Ended up pulling the head. Found little divots/scallops in the top of the liners from valve contact as most of the valves/guides were worn. He did the head up & did an RB30/25 combo.

We'll apparently my new injectors are leaking. I warmed the car up then turned it off and there was practically fresh fuel around the turbo flange. Got them all out just then. Number 5 injector was completely stuck in there! Which shouldn't make a difference lol may send them to get tested.

A stuck injector is very possible, however it won't be white smoke, as there isn't that much oil to wash off the bore. The smoke will be more black. The other side of this coin is fuel dilution in your oil. What does your dipstick say? Do an oil change BEFORE you start it again & measure the quantity that comes out.

Nah mate..I pulled out all the injectors and found that the workshop that fitted them left the seals from the old injectors in there and blocking the flow completely in 2 cylinders. Cylinder 5 & 6.. Sending the car back there and they are doing it all over for free. I'm relieved yet frustrated at the same time haha hopefully there isn't any internal damage

Wow. That's not cool. Also, cant see how that would cause smoke, unless theres more issues. Good luck getting it sorted .
  • 3 weeks later...

I have same problems with mine smoke on decel, take off and gearing down, at idle it does smoke a little somtimes will probably have to pull the head off. Someone mentioned it can be done by pressurizing the cylinder your working on. And found the seals for about $50 from nissan.

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
