My name is Aaron. New to the whole skyline scene. I don't own one as yet and wont for about a year. I am saving for a house so budget wont allow me the pleasure. I am just going to get an R33 GTST by what I have been reading up on. I would prefer the R32 but I like the interior better on the R33 and the R34 is out of my price range and GTR's (as much as I want one) are too expensive.

Basically I just want a reliable car (stock if possible) to do a few mods to here and there. Basically I need a hobby and I have always loved my cars albeit I don't know much but that is what I am here to learn.

my previous cars were:

1988 CRX D16 Turbo@ 7 &12 PSI

1988 CRX B16A

2001 Honda Integra Type R AUDM

Current car: 1997 EK1 Honda Civic. Gets me the where I need to go and is cheap on fuel.

and a bunch of shitty Fords and Holdens.

But as mentioned I need a project to do and the Skyline is the car I have chosen.

Have not always been a fan as most the bogans around here are just that and give them a bad name but started hanging around the right people who are true enthusiasts and now cars are my passion.

Looking forward to talking with all of you and in the next year owning and starting my project.

Cheers,

Aaron.

Thanks. Yeah I have learnt my lesson about jumping in on buying a car. I would love to drive an R33 before I buy one though just so I know what the car feels like if that makes sense. Maybe even rock up to a few meets and get to know the people and their cars.

Welcome Aaron and as James said it is great to see you are putting some research in before purchasing a Skyline. Your previous rides sound cool as well, I love the look of those late 80s CRXs and having a VTEC or turbo engine as you did would really get a light CRX moving.

It got moving alright but torque steer made it too hard to control on 7 let alone 12 PSI, lol. The B16A was nice too but I still miss my Type R. Comes with full Recaro interior stock and just superb handling and the noise was insane, lol. redline at 8600 form memory. Torque killed that car though. Took a lot to get to 6k to hit VTEC. But in saying that I would love to own one again someday. Always wanted an NSX-R though :)

Yeah I don't want to buy a lemon. I want something to work on but not spend all my money forever keeping it going, lol. I have a few mates that will help me look at one. Somewhere in the 5-7K I am hoping for. Just depends what is available at the time. I don't want an auto that for sure. Just find them boring to drive.

Thank you, im a getting a lot of help and information from this forum and I appreciate it.

The majority seem to be around that mark. What is the comprehensive insurance on one of these? Every time I try to get a quote on line they say I need to call :(

a really clean and reliable 33 will be over 7k unless you find someone who needs to sell fast.

I would not sell mine for less than 8.5 and i'd have to be desperate. Was offered $8500 as a trade in from a caryard, so obviously they could still make a profit on that.

Insurance varies on your age (obviously). try justcars for online quotes. A lot of insurers won't cover them as they are imports.

over 25 you are roughly looking at $600-$1000 full comp, depending on agreed value, mods, excess...

under 25, well its heaps.

What is the comprehensive insurance on one of these? Every time I try to get a quote on line they say I need to call :(

I'm 25 years old with maximum no claim bonus - im insured with justcar, my premium is $1250 and my excess is $800. The agreed value for my car is $10,500 and it includes cover for all aftermarket mods.

Last year my premium was $1600 and my excess was $1200.

I am 28 so by the looks of it I will need about $1500 a year which isn't too bad.

I seen quite a few for around the 5-7k mark so I was just going off that but by the sounds of it the cheaper would have something wrong with them. I wont buy one unless myself and the person who helps me is confident with the car. Probably best to buy one that's on site here as I can research it then.

I only tired to look at Shannons and NRMA. Chances are they could insure me and I would prefer NRMA as I am with them but at the end of the day it depends on what is the best deal that covers what I want.

$970 annual with agreed value of $13,300 and excess of $825. My civic isn't much less than that. That's for full comp through just car.

That's as cheap as its going to get :)

And remember skylines are imports and have a bad reputation for being written off so a lot of insurance companies refuse to insure them!

Anybody else have any advice on cheap/good insurance companies??

welcome mate.

hope you get the right car when you purchase.

by the sounds of it, youve got time.

head to your local state thread, and have a look at upcoming events.

will help you find people with a 33 that may take you for a run.

either way, enjoy the forum.

generally, we like all cars, bot just skylines.

Just Cars seems the only place importers can go which really sucks. Its not like we dont have high performance cars in Oz either :/

Plenty of time mate. I might get one in 6 months maybe a year maybe 14 months. But wont be any earlier than 6. Just see what i come across but i am forever on gumtree and car sales looks and reading up.

Seems they all have the same mods too. Splitfire coilpacks, FMIC, 3" dump into 4" or something like that.

I figued a meet is the best way to get to know the car and hear what the drivers have to say about their model Skyline. Be good just to join a car community again.

    • Given you're running a 2.8 and my 2.5 is not really like for like, I suspect there could be a bit more timing you could give it. What is the kW yield per degree you're putting through it? Here's my E85 map to give you an idea, where it was I could still get another 3~4kW per degree thrown at it.
    • It turns out that Setrab make a fan specifically for the oil cooler which is great and I've installed it with minimal swearing. I removed my 2x 12in push fans from the front of my aircon condenser and wired them into this. My main thermo fans kick on when I use the aircon anyway and would effectively already be working as puller fans through the condensor which is infront of the rad. The push fans (understandably) didn't really do much in the config they were previously in so now they're out. Now we're on to the "Oil fan doesn't really do much either!". Yes I'll duct it next if it does nothing in heavy use which it shouldn't. But hey, the object exists and fits great and is cool. Let me have this. The car is still in the "do my fittings leak oil now? do my wheels actually rub?" phase. I did a spirited drive on them and didn't hear or feel anything. Then I got back home and noticed there were grind marks on the inside of the rims, though I couldn't see where they were touching I got out the grinder and attacked the suspects. Note: I do not know how to use a grinder. Then I realised I had dragged my new rims across my concrete driveway before I did this drive. I didn't think I had damage at that time when I briefly looked...... but remembered this occurred after I did all the angle grinding. The grinding on the wheels in some very specific spots. It's not around the whole rim for example, which lines up with dragging it across concrete more than hitting a suspension component for even 1 full rotation. So everything is currently painted and taped up and I need to test it some more to see if it really IS rubbing, but from inside the car it doesn't feel like it is. In other news I attempted to do a before and after comparison of the heads/cam upgrade thing. Dynos lie, everything is in different measurements. Here is the data from the sandown back straight. Car go faster than before. Vroom vroom.
    • Here's my base ignition. +3 correction to redline when shooting water/meth which is always on. Looking at my old ignition table, I should be able to add 1-2 degree's next time I'm on the dyno.  Let me know your thoughts.
    • Given what I know now - same haha, but this was 12 years ago with second hand 740cc Nismo injectors in my S15 daily, I was too busy hunting elsewhere for the issue to even look at the injectors, running through some cleaner was a happy coincidence haha
    • Not a terrible idea. But if I ever had concerns that my injectors were sufficiently dirty to be causing me a problem, they would be out of the engine and onto the actual injector cleaner/testing bench.
