Hi team

Can someone help me out, one of the bearings in my box is shot, hoping it's the input shaft..

The way I see it I've got 3 options.

1) buy a new box

2) rebuild this one

3) exchange this one for a new box

Can I please grab some insight as to which I should go about it?

Does anyone know anyone with a half decent box for sale? (Cheaper the better, can be a 30e box for all I care asking as it goes straight in)

Does anyone know anyone that can rebuild it for me (I'm lazy and frankly don't have the time)

Does anyone know a reco shop that would exchange?

Cheers team

Second hand gearboxes can be touch and go, I've bought some crappy second hand gearboxes. It's a plus if you can drive the car before buying it (to see what the box is like), although this is uncommon and would likely result in a higher price.
Rebuilding the gearbox, as mention above, is hardly worth it. Depending on the shop you'd be up for around ~$1k (give or take) plus++ for bearings, and chances are a gearbox of that age has some average dog teeth and a few other problems which would need fixing too, and you might end up spending $1500 or so on an old RB20 gearbox.

If you can pull the housings off the gearbox and check the gears and dog teeth, then it might be worthwhile having only bearings done. You might save a bit of cash on labour if you can pull the box down yourself too.

Otherwise you'd be better off going with an RB25DET gearbox, although you still face the problem of buying an old (although not as old as RB20), used gearbox.

Or just go all out and buy a brand new RB25DET gearbox for ~$2300 :P

I've bought a few gearboxes lately (3 in the last few months) and out of the 4 only one of them has been worth using, and it still needed some repairs to reverse gears. This is bad luck, but demonstrates how things can go with old/used gearboxes.

    • @GTSBoy This method was able to get readings of -10 to -2, so it looks like its monitoring.  Now I need to figure out why the vacuum on the line provided isn't alternating with manifold pressure.  I went with 2 lines that an RB25 tuner recommended but I'll get a longer hose and try directly off the back of the manifold.  He may have been used to OEM intake setups while I have a DBW setup that removed the MAF and IACV.
    • I work at a car detailing and tinting shop called Quark which gets all manner of German cars in usually (mainly due to a contract with Mercedes Benz Kita Osaka, BMW Nishinomiya and others) but every once in a while something special comes in, like a fully restored 1972 HS30 Nissan Fairlady 240ZG... The shop owner had immediately started applying film to the windows as soon as it was in the shop so the interior was completely covered in towels and plastic sheets. But I could get a few photos of the engine bay which was restored like new. Such an amazing car to see in pristine condition in Japan these days.
    • Was going to say the car pulls up nicely everywhere, especially going into that last long right hander before the main straight. Looks like a lot of fun.
    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
