Hi

Im looking for some peoples feedback and opinions on a replacement fuel pump for my 044, I currently have a carter black lift pump into under car surge tank in a R30 skyline with around 300kw I have had enough with the 044's. I have replaced 3 in 12 months, I have an inline filter etc. I have been looking at the SX performance pumps what other options should I be looking at?

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve,

Why are you killing the 044s?

They're a great pump and it's very unusual to see 3 let go in 12 months.

I'd be looking to solve the problem of why they're dying rather than buy a more expensive replacement pump and hope it doesn't die.

What ecu are you running? If you have a spare PWM output I would be seriously looking at the Fuelab variable speed pumps. Be aware, they need at least 10an lines into the pump to limit cavitation. (Same thing could be killing your 044)

Hi Steve,

Do you run a filter between the tank and carter?

You can use a cheapo clear plastic Ryco one which will allow you to see how dirty it is and when to replace.

The carter is a vane type pump and will not filter anything.

If you have the time and CBF, maybe spend a day and flush the tank.

I'd also check power supply to the 044 at idle and under load if possible (hard to do if it's mounted under the car, but you can bodge something up with some long (decent gauge) wires off the pump terminals to a mate reading the multimeter in the back seat. Needless to say, don't cross the wires...)

Definately must have an issue if your killing 3 044s in a year ive had mine for 3 years as my surge tank pump with no filter in between lift pump and surge and have no problems and pre engine filter is relatively clean yearly. You probably have a dirty fuel tank and that might be getting into the 044. Have you cut open the broken 044 and checked the internal filter what it lookss like?

    • Hope you aren't too sore after that one, might take a day or 2 to notice yet and I guess it is a loooooong drive home. On the bright side, tube frame front end is a thing at superlap, right?

    • The chart of front pressure to rear pressure (with one being on the x axis and the other being on the y axis) is not a straight line on a typical proportioning valve. At lower pressures there is a straight line with one slope, and at higher pressures that changes to a lower slope. That creates a bend in the line at that pressure, called the knee point. If you do not change the proportionng as the pressure gets higher, you will suffer excessive pressure (at one end of the car or the other, depending on which way you look at the proportioning action) and then get lockups at that end. The HFM BM57, from my memory of previous discussions, is based on the BM57 from a different car (to a Skyline), with a different requirement for the location of the knee point and the distribution of pressure front to rear, and so is not a good choice for an upgrade on a Skyline. Here's a couple of links to some old posts, one from here, one from elsewhere. A lot of it pertains to adjustable prop valves, but the idea is the same. There are plenty of discussions on here about this issue from al the many years of people wanting a cheap/accessible option. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/ https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/learn-me-brake-proportioning-valves/236880/page1/
    • Yeah dunno why johhny posted that here with no context, just post on FB/insta bro where he put it up?  Laine had an off at T4 during Thurs prac, he's ok, car is less than perfect, they are done for the weekend, he can fill in the rest. Bando also binned it like 100m up the road.
    • I feel there must have been a FB/insta post and the weekend did not start well at all I hope everyone is all okay
