Hey,

Well following my other post where I talked about starting issues, I thaught i would post this as a seperate topic.

Anyway, My R32 Gts-t seems to have random starting issues. Basically when i leave my car in the garage over night. By the morning when i start the car it some times has problems starting.

These problems include..

* Some times wont kick over, so a second attempt is needed

* Some times will start and very slowly build up the revs enough

* Some times will idle very low (100Revs) and i need to stab the accelerator to start it.

Now after doing some thinking, I first thought it was my battery , however I think The battery is fine because accroding to mt turbo timer, the battery voltage is about 13.5v - 14v Which is apparently normal??

As for the instance where it sat at very low revs, I think this maybe because I left the heater/ de-mister on and the car was trying to cold start at the same as trying to run the air con, hence not supplying enough power.

This leads me to think It maybe my Spark Plugs?

Which I have not has a chance to change.

So what Im asking pretty much is, has anyone else had had this problem, and what solutions did you come up with?

Thanks In advanced.

Yeah, my 32 starts like a **** as well, I have to wait until it is fully primed, then to start it I have to give it gas until it catches, then after that it is fine. will only happen when it is the first start, or when it has been sitting and become cold again. This leads me to believe that I have a dicked cold start sensor.

mines a bitch to start aswell and its always in the garage but this has only happend when i changed the standerd plugs (what eva it came off the show room with) with some NGK's of some sort BP something or other and that was 2K km's ago and its only now started to start regularly so plugs might be the go there.

So in english your saying ...

You had the same problem, you then changed your plugs and your problem was fixed?

ahhh no i HAVE the same problem it only happend when i changed the plugs bcoz i think i downgraded the plugs ill be investing in some platniums soon and i suggest u do the same i dont think having inside or out has an effect.

hmm yeah check ur plugs and all that, i had same issues when its cold in the mornings. clean out ur air filter, and also chuck a bottle of injector cleaner into ur fuel next couple of times u fill up, works wonders. get more km's out of each tank, give it a go.

Hmm So much advice..

I forgot to mention, when I drive off the car feels a bit slugish, like just before it comes on to boost it feels like it kinda hits a point and i kinda have to give it more acceleration to get on to boost.

Im pretty sure this goes away after the car has warmed up, and apparently its a common thing (dont take my word for thaugh though).

The car came with what looks like an autobahn pod, so i think ill just replace it.

As for Injector cleaner, ive heard a few bad things about that stuff, like it can stuff up your plugs?

anyone else heard that?

I have the same problem and it seems to get worse with the colder weather. I've tried nearly everthing to erradicate this problem like -

1) clean the AFM, AFC,

2) check spark plugs,

3) check for leakages in the houses,

4) clean all electrical contacts,

5) check TPS,

6) clean the throttle body

7) Test the oxygen sensor

and still no luck But there is still a few more things to check.

Could be leaking fuel injectors or fuel pump - but from my reaseach in other forums it is more related to when you car is at operating temperature then you switch it off and start it up again after ~10mins and it can't idle properly for 2 mins then it becomes ok. But it is still worth trying to test. I was going to test this last week but the ony fuel pressure sensor I could find was $150. Probably cheaper to get a mechanic to test it. If anyone knows where to get one please tell me.

Apparently there is a wax-up(named something like this) idle device used for cold starts. It is situated under the plenum chamber and I can just see it with a torch. Looks like a mission to access it. Anyway I read in the skylinesdownunder forums that one guy replaced his one and the car never had a cold start problem again. :) Something I need to try. Can anyone agree with this?

My 2c of ideas ;)

Thanks for the information. My Car is suffering REAL bad at the moment.

Im going to try and get these bloody spark plugs changed, but its been a hassle to work out the best time/money :S

I have heard of leaking injectors before.

I really hope changing my spark plugs will fix this problem.

Its got me really confused. :S

mindflux: recently i installed a powerfc and retarded the base timing on the cas (its untuned). after i did this the car was very hard to start cold, takes a few hits of the key, take about 5 seconds to get upto idle (800rpm). so i rotated the cas back to centre and its all good now. it might be worthwhile checking that your cas hasn't slipped, or even advancing it a tiny bit to see what that does, just dont advance it too far.

    • Cheers. Skyline is back on the menu, can’t get rid of it. It’s like a child you don’t want, or herpes
    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
