So, I've been looking at getting a wagon, and currently interested in a 01 rs4.

I come from a BMW, and a many BMWs before that, so I'm used to having them drive reliably into 200,000 and even 300,000 km. The inline 6 BMWs go forever and make decent power.

The stag I'm looking at has been looked after and recently has new suspension, driveline belts, AFM, coils, oil/coolant, trans flush and new brakes and pads.

Starts first pop, literally fired up as soon as the key hit the on position.

Down side is its at 200,000km and I don't see many of them for sale in that high km area.

Any advice? Are they ok to keep chugging along that high?

I'm getting it checked out tomorrow by a vehicle testing station thoroughly.

Anyone here have a high km stag?

What are things to look out for at that stage?

What's going to be on its last legs by now and should I ask to see if certain things have been fixed/swapped out?

I think Cam had almost 300,000k's before his m35 got smashed. I am pretty confident it would be back on the road again by now too, most likely with a wound back odo. :P

The VQ25det is a good strong engine, and should run for many more years if serviced regularly, just like anything mechanical. Sensor issues can be common faults, like the AFM and cam/crank sensors.

There are a few issues that can arise with high K cars, mainly failing turbos and suspension bushes. I would be checking out the car thoroughly on a hoist if you can, making sure you check for rust in the rails, and the usual things you would do with a Jap import with unknown K's.

I'm sure most cars are capable given that they've been looked after with regular oil changes.

I'm just not familiar with them, and especially the vq25det being turbo thought it may put strain on certain things. And of course "the just don't build them like they used to" haha.

I'll chat to the guy as he has all service records since being imported in 07 and look at a turbo rebuild/replacement.

What km should the turbo need work if it hasn't already?

There are a couple of wrecked cars with working engines I could probably buy the turbo off and rebuild as a back up swap?

Not sure about oz, but wreckers buy uncompliant/damaged cars to use parts off here, small market the stagea but enough parts around to not import any myself.

You are in NZ? I guess considering a complied car here is going for 8k, you are looking at a 4-6k car? And you are worried about it's longevity and service history?

These engines are built and designed fairly well considering it's a French design. Could have been much worse in that department. :PMost Nissan turbo engines are built stout, and the VQ25det is no exception. I am pushing 3 times the wheel KW on a stock engine. Try 30psi force fed into a 202 Holden 6 and see how far you get around a track.

There is no set amount of K's the turbo will explode, although I think Nissan recommend 100,000k replacement. Many have gone much further. A simple $800 highflow service should give it another 100,000k's, the hassle is getting to the turbo, it's in an awkward spot to say the least.

Parts aren't a problem for me, I have my second wreck in the driveway. :P

Yeah nz, its actually in the 7-8k price.

250's are in the 6-7k, 300rx are sitting between 7-10k.The later models up to 12k

The price has pretty much hit a plateau...

Subaru's on the other hand are a lot cheaper, however besides the small boot, I'm no fan of the hard to work on boxer.

We can only import the turbo M35's, luckily they are the best bang for buck power wise. The direct injection motors have much better economy, but they also need extensive internal engine cleaning regularly due to their EGR and direct injection design, plus the power is fairly low for such a heavy car. I would probably go for the 3.5na if you want long term reliability.

Cool, my inspection report came back ok, inspector noted its in very good condition mechanically and structurally for its age, no sign of rust structurally or otherwise.

I'm not looking for a long term car, probably a year max, and something that'll hold its price somewhat for that long, not too many rs4's around so its more sought after compared to its other models.

My next car/project is going to be an ex military land rover lwb soft top, 109".

Going to put the body on an early discovery chassis so I can have the coil springs and disc brakes, as well as the newer v8. The are the same chassis pretty much.

So this is to tie me over until then hopefully.

Had it for a few years now still going strong never had any problems despite the constant abuse i give it lol.Coming up to the big 200 000ks, slowly putting bits a pieces on as i get spare cash .The vq25det is a little beast

    • Yup. You can get creative and make a sort of "bracket" with cable ties. Put 2 around the sender with a third passing underneath them strapped down against the sender. Then that third one is able to be passed through some hole at right angles to the orientation of the sender. Or some variation on the theme. Yes.... ummm, with caveats? I mean, the sender is BSP and you would likely have AN stuff on the hose, so yes, there would be the adapter you mention. But the block end will either be 1/8 NPT if that thread is still OK in there, or you can drill and tap it out to 1/4 BSP or NPT and use appropriate adapter there. As it stands, your mention of 1/8 BSPT male seems... wrong for the 1/8 NPT female it has to go into. The hose will be better, because even with the bush, the mass of the sender will be "hanging" off a hard threaded connection and will add some stress/strain to that. It might fail in the future. The hose eliminates almost all such risk - but adds in several more threaded connections to leak from! It really should be tapered, but it looks very long in that photo with no taper visible. If you have it in hand you should be able to see if it tapered or not. There technically is no possibility of a mechanical seal with a parallel male in a parallel female, so it is hard to believe that it is parallel male, but weirder things have happened. Maybe it's meant to seat on some surface when screwed in on the original installation? Anyway, at that thread size, parallel in parallel, with tape and goop, will seal just fine.
    • How do you propose I cable tie this: To something securely? Is it really just a case of finding a couple of holes and ziptying it there so it never goes flying or starts dangling around, more or less? Then run a 1/8 BSP Female to [hose adapter of choice?/AN?] and then the opposing fitting at the bush-into-oil-block end? being the hose-into-realistically likely a 1/8 BSPT male) Is this going to provide any real benefit over using a stainless/steel 1/4 to 1/8 BSPT reducing bush? I am making the assumption the OEM sender is BSPT not BSPP/BSP
    • I fashioned a ramp out of a couple of pieces of 140x35 lumber, to get the bumper up slightly, and then one of these is what I use
    • I wouldn't worry about dissimilar metal corrosion, should you just buy/make a steel replacement. There will be thread tape and sealant compound between the metals. The few little spots where they touch each other will be deep inside the joint, unable to get wet. And the alloy block is much much larger than a small steel fitting, so there is plenty of "sacrificial" capacity there. Any bush you put in there will be dissimilar anyway. Either steel or brass. Maybe stainless. All of them are different to the other parts in the chain. But what I said above still applies.
    • You are all good then, I didn't realise the port was in a part you can (have!) remove. Just pull the broken part out, clean it and the threads should be fine. Yes, the whole point about remote mounting is it takes almost all of the vibration out via the flexible hose. You just need a convenient chassis point and a cable tie or 3.
