Can cast iron be tig welded to cast aluminium now?

I thought you needed friction welding or some other impractical method to weld those two together [emoji14]

I didn't say it would be strong

Cheers mate, I'll ask the current dishwasher what's she wants to do/get

Yeah hardox is wear plate it comes in different higher tensile strengths and is common for use in load bearing/abrasive applications. Loader buckets, mills etc. More R+D from the master! Did u stick weld it?

Yep that's a jib alright! Any pics of your handi work?

DSC_0377.JPGbeen working on this stuff the last few days. Catch can with stack dual 2 " inlets to 3" outlet. reducers 10" nom from manifolds with bellows up to dual 12" nom exhaust pipes, dual 10" aluminised air intakes and all the engine coolant tubes for a M.T.U. Or (mostly troubled unit.) power generation. The 2x12" exhaust pipes run to a dual side inlet silencer 4' diameter 18" outlet with stack mounted on a frame outside the engine room. Show us your diesel!
Its running around 420hp on 98 and 480hp on e85 but took out the e85 tune to make the 98 one cleaner ( no e85 in my area ) on gtss turbos with kelford 265 cams. Bit lacking in power, really need to be up in the 500hp for a gtr but cannot complain I spose :4_joy:. Has full haltech catalogue as well

Can't really see a reason to weld the dissimilar metals together? That would be highly specialised. One is a aluminium based alloy, The other iron based. I've repaired a few cast Ali/iron heads for cars/drag cars before. Fully F/G clamped the head to a 2" thick cast iron milled table. Pre heated with the oxy gently/the entire head gradually. Grooved out the crack with Ali Burr on the die grinder, down to where you can't see where the crack started, welding well before where the crack started and finished using cast Ali rods and pure argon. Post heated the head gradually to a cool down. The heat transfer properties and molecular structure of the materials are pretty much a polar opposite. Alloys are loose softer and dance freely, high thermal expansion and contraction. Irons are tighter don't dance and have low thermal expansion and contraction. Alloy's s are a/c welding with tig for castings. Iron's Are d/c - welding with tig for castings. They both have a tendency to spit the filler material out if you weld it too hot, that's where the pre and post heating comes into it. I crank the hot start up a bit because you will create a weak point if you hang around to get the weld puddle pooling. Easy on Ali harder for lower amps on cast. Nature of the beast. The pre-post heat is more critical on the alloy than iron. Just a thought? Our new Kempi tig has a mix setting that combines Ac/dc current and has a synergic setting as well? Can't beat the old analouge Hobart welder so far as I'm concerned. Digital, high low high low, analouge higgghh lowww, higgghh, lowww. Makes for beautiful pulse welding! Alternatively you could mash a heap of bird shit into the corner and hope the flux and slag sticks it togetherB-) bronzing, brazing, solder, pop rivets, silicone. Nuts and bolts etc:-)

    • @Murray_Calavera iam just considering options 🙂 of course it is very expensive so that why i ask here 🙂  @joshuaho96 I looked at that GCG hybrid(i remember looking at it few weeks before) So this is "that" hybrid where i send them my turbo and they upgrade the inside to Garrett stuff and then they send it back. It cost around 1200-1300 USD which is FAR cheaper than the HKS and it is what iam looking for(i just do not have experience like this...to send something off to "upgrade" ) @tylink720 that is like 150 USD turbo no? 😄 I dont think i have the "ease on my mind" with this kind of turbo. I just put over 7000k USD to "LINK" up my engine...dont want to blow it up with cheap turbo 😄     EDIT: https://www.cj-motor.com/gcg-turbo-charger-for-nissan-rb20det-rb25det-high?srsltid=AfmBOooVeOZ6CZ6r1AIv5m-KPaa6BvudIPJTY8LW78khkd-gQlsaCht9 I looked at this and it seems ok? It is that CGC hybrid and it costs around 1250 USD (with back shipping). Do any of you have experience with this hybrid on NEO turbo? I quickly look thru the forum/web and it seems very good.
    • Echo the awesome sentiment 👍 Definitely a car worth saving. Looking forward to seeing updates as well.

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
