Mate you would be shocked (its horrible) if you saw my work tonight, fkn dogs been chewing on the doors for a while so I had to sort it out today when I saw one in the garage after work.

Not too bad for a paper pusher in a West Perth office!

By day Martin the paper pusher by night under his secret alias Shoey the sheety. I thought it looked pretty good ;-)

It's a newish battery too. Bought it about 8months ago. Got the cat jumped and drove it home (another 30minutes) the battery wasn't charging at all. On Tonkin if I flicked my lights on my electrics would turn off, even the stereo.
 
Got her home. Shut the engine off and immediately tried to start it. Nothing. Completely flat .

Charge up the battery check the voltage with a multi meter it should be about 13ish volts at full charge. Put the battery in the car start it and with it running it should be about 14.2 to 14.4v this will prove if the alternator I's charging the battery. If it has a external voltage regulator you will only need to replace the regulator. If it's built in new alternator? Cheapie multimeter is only about $30. What cca is the battery? Check the water level and make sure the cells are covered with distilled water.

DSC_0120(1).JPGI've got a little tacker here I can charge up for a spare if you want it? Has 10mm or 3/8 terminals so no good for our cars at home. Only a year old free:-) I recall you had a monster under the bonnet. Does it still have the battery in the boot? Maybe a dual battery system?

The car will run with no accessories for ages if the alternator isn't charging the battery. It's the accessories that will kill it. Stereo lights a/c etc.

You've got a charge issue mate and probably battery is fine.

Does batt light come on with key on them go off when started? Is the fan belt tight? Sometimes the belt can slip without making much noise.

You've got a charge issue mate and probably battery is fine.

Does batt light come on with key on them go off when started? Is the fan belt tight? Sometimes the belt can slip without making much noise.

Would have to be insanely loose to not turn the water pump and alternator?

It could be the battery, car wouldnt run if the alternator wasnt charging. Batterys can collapse at any time. Is it hooked up to a trickle charger at all? Worse things in the world for batterys, slowly cook them to death....

    • I've seen similar actually in my situation. You never know what tables are attempted to be used when the car thinks it's -99C or +200C. The fail state is not usually that extreme but you know what I mean - it was in my case though! This is where being able to read all the sensors is useful cause you see this stuff really quickly.
    • The above is very important. However as long as you keep timing relatively low, it's plausible to make your own knock ears and plausible to learn to tune with a modern ECU that can do wideband O2 correction like a boost controller. I mean if you only have one viable road to even drive the car on, learning to tinker to this level may be worth doing given you can't do much else with the car...?
    • I find the fact that the rear plate has to be bent inwards at the rear not so bad: but the front is just awful: It's like come on. (these are my very old, now retired/turned in plates) TBH it is a lot of money to fix a minor issue, the fact I said "I'll never really spend the money on doing this" is why people ended up buying them as a gift for a 'car guy' who can be hard to shop for.. for car guy things.
    • I just bent the ends of my premo plates. It even went through Regency like that after the engine conversion and the inspector (a great bloke!) just squinted his eyes and said "I didn't see that". Plates, and how they look, are just something that have zero importance to me.
    • Yeah, I would have said the same. It makes me suggest that there are other things wrong, such that the ECU is totally unhappy with the broken sensor. The only other thought here is that maybe it is shorted, which might cause a different issue to the typical "disconnected" sensor.
