Hi Guys,

I have purchased a few cars privately over the years and all have had had problems very early on. I'm not a mechanic but I have a good idea of what to check prior to purchasing and I triple check everything yet I have been burned 3 times now...

I can't believe I am even thinking about buying another performance car but I haven't had a car I am happy with at all. I want to give it 1 more shot to put a god damn smile on my face.

Is there anyone honest in Sydney that can help me out with buying a car that has good knowledge of what to look for and how to avoid these f**king lemons? A case of beer or few will be your reward.

Please PM me! I am located in Ryde

I am just in this state of mind now where I think everyone is dodgy and whatever car I end up buying will need a rebuild pronto.

P.S - It's not my driving if that's what you are thinking. All of them have been bodged up before they sell them and I draw the short straw every time even with "pre-inspections". I think they are a load of shit, they look like they are checking everything but how can this happen?!

Also I think it's worth mentioning I am not taking these cars to backyard mechanics, these are some of the most well known shops I have taken my cars to.

Without knowing what your short list includes, I learnt at my local Chinese restaurant tonight of a 2014 Lexus IS-F with 20,000Km that's supposedly going for  $55K.

But I bet the restauranter has got something wrong in the data somewhere. It's too cheap. Lol

Hi Terry,

I'm not made of money lol!

I originally wanted an 05 or 06 wrx sti which I did have and were both a nightmare. Both needed rebuilds almost as soon as I got them after taking them to different mechanics.

I want a JDM S15 (99' or 00') or an R34 GTT (Can't afford a GTR :( ) - Budget is about $18k or a bit more for the right one

There is very little of both to pick from locally and the ones I do like and have contacted just seem suss to me.

I am thinking of importing but this would cost more than if I find one already here

    • @Supernanoyour car has ended up in my hands and I was wondering if there has been any work done to the motor?
    • Sigh... yeah OEM mount rear battery, very R33, very demure, very mindful.
    • Would need a substantial current draw in the car to make a bunch of sparks. Obvs to now test resistance to ground of the car's B+ lead. If there's a short there, you'll see it. Only likely place for that, as you suspect is alternator. But there is also the possibility that rats have had a chew on some insulation. Shitbox has the battery in the boot, yeah? Plenty of cable to attack.
