V35 350GT Skyline - Engine missing and No power at high revs

Hi Guys,

I've got a 2003 V35 350 GT Skyline and I've been having an ongoing issue with engine missing and then no power at high revs. It only seems to be after I've been running the car for a while or at the end  of a trip home from work (about a 30 minute commute). I've taken my car to a mechanic a while back when I was getting a service, the missing happened at that stage while idle but it didnt seem to effect the power from the car. It had gotten a lot worse and took it back to the mechanic and they claimed it was an iginition coil.

They replaced it, drove it to work in the morning no problems. Then on the way home I when I first started driving, it wasnt too bad, maybe a rough idle at times. Towards the end of my trip I tried giving it a bit of power and it as soon as it went over 4k revs it just loses it's power.

I've gone to this same mechanic in Brisbane for years but I always seem to have issues where I have to come back to look at things so I may have to look at going to someone else. Does anyone know what this kind of issue sounds like?

Thanks in advance,

Jonno

I suggest you take it back to the mechanic and have him check whether

 1. There is any oil leak into the sparkplug chamber

2. Engine Compression for any leak, if there is then an engine rebuild is required which might cost thousands. In my case my mechanic is able to fix it with a few hundreds without having to rebuild and my car still performs well.

Is there any stutter with the rev during idle?

Sorry for the late reply! Haven't been able to get back on yet.

Yes it has a rough idle, but this is where it's weird. If it's cold there is usually no issue but give it about 10-15 mins of driving, when I pull up to a set of lights I get a very rough idle. But this is when the car is in drive, once I put it into neutral it stops happening, or significantly less then when in drive. Who is your mechanic? It would be great to get in contact with him.

  • 2 weeks later...

I think there might be something wrong with the Camshaft/CrankShaft sensor as well and it is a factory-recall reported issue for our car model. My mechanic managed to narrow it down to which one specifically and my car has been running fine since then.

He is based in Bankstown. I'll inbox you the full address if you are still interested

FYI, rough idle usually can be fixed by cleaning the Throttle Body and performing idle relearn procedure. Then after doing all that and the issue is still there then the Cam/Crank shaft sensors are next to be looked at.

My mechanic and I went through the whole eliminating process to narrow down the root cause.

Hope that helps.

    • Haha, i kow right? Could have bought so many cars for the same amount of money (or less) but driving Unicorn gives you at least +1mln to style 😅. Like wise man said "life's to short to drink cheap wine and drive boring cars" 😉
    • Newbie here, proud owner of an Autech 260RS. I'm on the hunt for wiring diagrams specific to the 260RS, particularly S1. I've ran my eyes through R33, R34 Diagrams, there are some similarities, however continue to find incorrect wire colours and pins on connectors in the 33,34 diagrams.   I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? I'd be happy to pay for the originals in Japanese. I can translate them, at least they would be accurate.   Any help please would be greatly appreciated, never heard an RB26DETT before let alone driven one, and I've got a spaghetti monster of goodness to sort out.   Cheers Benny
    • Hey all  im wondering if you can help me please I have put a rb20 box in my r34 gtt as my auto packed up and a friend had a spare box I know it’s not ideal but it will get me up and running for now. we have done the conversation and everything is working great but my Speedo we got a s13 speed sensor but my Speedo reads double now and I bought a speed converter but still not having any luck.  so I thought I’ll reach out and pick your brains  any help would be appreciated please as I wanna drive my car again
    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻
