steel wheel upgrade or garret -7s

hey guys, new here. want to upgrade my turbo chargers so I can safely run 1bar or a bit more boost. not after crazy hp as its just street driven but may want a bit more later. would guess its at 300 now with tomei cams, cam gears and mines computer and straight through exhaust with 1 rear muffler. currently on 10-11psi.

I can get steel wheel stock turbos for reasonably cheap, they are always on sale here or I can get mine rebuilt for not a lot. otherwise its the garret -7 option (which seems to be perfect for what I want which is response) but I would just be putting those turbos in, probably dumps and run 1-1.2bar.

which option would be better? obviously I would like to go the cheaper as garrets are double the price of steel wheel upgrades. if I can get 400hp I would be stoked. don't want to have to uprate to much else.

I have a pretty large budget but am saving for a property purchase so don't want to throw 10k at this if I can help it.

its for a rb26.

Factory turbos with steel wheels put in them never perform as well as the bolt on garretts do.

Instead of the -7s look into the -9s they give the same response (maybe even slightly better) but flow slightly more power

would I need any supporting mods to run the power level I am after? 400hp is my goal as its just my weekend car and I like my license also. not a racecar.

If I can buy turbos and some second hand dumps and put them on for 3kish that isn't too bad.

I know the garrets are better but I don't want to go overkill if I can do it for half the price. I find the car fast enough as it is for the street but I just want a bit more.

It's the response difference as well that make the garretts better and in the long run the price isn't much different.

for 300kw (400hp) you'll need a set of injectors and a fuel pump unless it's already been changed and a clutch that will be up to the task as well, plus the usual exhaust and etc

To put things into perspective, my V-Spec II made 325kw at 20PSI boost at the RW's with the following mods:

  • Nistune ECU Upgrade
  • NISMO AFS
  • HKS EVC 6 Boost Controller.
  • Sard 720cc Injectors
  • Walbro Fuel Pump Upgrade but size not known
  • Garrett GT2859-9 Turbos
  • Tomei Adjustable Cam Gears (Intake and exhaust).
  • HPI 3.25" Dump Pipes
  • High Flow 3" Catalytic Converter
  • 3.25" HKS Exhaust System with 4.75" Cannon.

Cheers,

Bob.

already have an upgraded fuel pump. also full straight through exhaust from dumps back, so no cat and just a straight through muffler at the rear so should flow well. 3.5 inch.

wouldn't different injectors then require aftermarket ecu? can I not get 400hp on the stock injectors? I thought they would be fine and I would have expected the clutch to be fine also. im not planning on launching it everywhere, just some 2nd or 3rd gear squirts up to the speed limit

cheers for the write up. so it looks like no matter what I do its going to cost more than I hoped. bugger. mrs is going to love this lol

Beg for forgiveness not permission!

Bob.

Thanks mate. Was on the work computer so alot of stuff doesn't work, just jumped on my phone but you beat me to it.

might keep an eye out for a good deal on a second hand setup. Otherwise just bend over, pull some cash out and get it all done properly.

Standard injectors run out of flow at around 350hp and an aftermarket ecu would be required even to reach that.

Lesson that needs to learnt before even touching a bolt on these cars, nothing is cheap and if you want to play you need to pay

yea mate ain't that the truth.

already looks good, just everyone expects it be some insanely fast weapon. which currently, it isn't. its fast, but not fast fast.

Yeah I know how that feels, had mine since 2003 and it made 240kw until last year when I finally decided to pay to play with it

Thinking she may keep her standard turbos for a while but who knows, might start a car only fund so it doesn't look like im blowing too much on it.

Bob that Vspec 32 looks ace mate. Nice and clean. Don't see many silver GTRs over here.

    • Hello!  i just finished manual swaping my r34 skyline with a r33 rb20de box(RB71C)box  When the car is running it squeaks crazy loud and it was smoking from the gearbox area. The gearbox is fine it was tested. The clutch slave cylinder seems like it doesn't fully releases the clutch. I want to ask if this noise is from the throw out bearing or could it be the clutch assembly or disk att.xFliq87Gzw6kImKBVqDebXkj0fBqymk0JaYeP3_3SlM.mp4
    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
