Underpowered M35

Hi guys,

New to stageas (and turbos) just bought an axis M35 VQ25DET. I have noticed that the car has a rather rough idle, doesn't appear to be making any boost but don't have a boost gauge to verify that and tends to jerk around when driving.

My guess is a blown turbo. Has anyone else had these symptoms? Going to take it in to get looked at when I have some time off.

Thanks guys

originally no engine light. i unplugged the AFM to see if it would behave differently (it did, idles so much smoother) but in doing so it has now thrown a check engine light.

I am thinking it may be the AFM now as i'd assume if it wasn't, unplugging it would have made the car worse?

yeah, i been reading up on the stagea AFM, and one guy had VERY similar issues as me, seem to break really really easy, so may look into a subie or xtrail replacement one

usually its the thermister that goes not atually the afm itself. But that does cause problems because it gives the engine no inlet temp reading.

Did you replace all coil packs?

Best to do all coil packs  if they're still 4 of the originals in there. (and the plugs)

Bit like when a brake globe goes you can bet the other one is only a few weeks away from blowing also.

Yeah replaced all 6 coils. Did all 6 spark plugs while I was in there

New oem coils. I generally don't idle it for long but it does all its driving in city traffic. May check for boost leaks as down low is right, it's just when turbo spools up it hasn't got the same power it did... so my guess is either blocked cat, boost leak or the plugs

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
    • The maxpeedingrods turbo is cheap and bolts on to stock parts. I think you just need a bigger silicone coupler for the intake. Its a cheap china turbo, but it's been running on mine for almost 3 years at 16-19 psi.
    • What do they look like right after you've tried to start it with everything connected? Also post photos of what they actually look like.
    • Also wanted to say, my new spark plugs are blackened looks like it's very rich. I have splitfire coilpacks but stock coilpack loom and ignitor. I tried directly grounding the ignitor ground to body as well.
