Hi there,

I've just bought a second hand turbo and need some help identifying what engine it's from. There are a bunch of numbers on the plate, but nothing seems to return when searching for the info on it.

The plate reads Garrett, but there are castings of both Garret & Nissan Motor on the housing. I've added some photos, any info would be much appreciated.

Give photos of the compressor inducer, turbine exducer, turbine inlet flange, casting marks on the comp and exhaust housings.

Write out the numbers you can identify on that core tag. We can't see them clearly enough on the photo to be sure about anything.

Measure diameter of comp inducer, turbine exducer. Measure OD of comp wheel and turbine if you can. Verniers are cheap.

I'll try my best, first turbo I've ever bought so apologies if I don't know all the right terms or bits.

The plate reads:

14420-W3460 Made in Japan Garrett

410581-11 RA 0235J

In addition, on a flange below that reads 'RSM5'.

Inside the exhaust port is either '10' or '01' and a 'V'.

On one part of the turbo it has a cast which looks like '2-9'.

On the part which has 'Nissan Motor'there is also a 4.

All,

I think I've found the answer - seems that although the plate doesn't have zeroes after the dash, the model number is actually 410581-0011. This would make it a TB0306 off a '81-'87 280/300ZX.

Some details on the parts numbers here:

http://jhdiesel.com/gt-nissan/

https://www.soonparts.com/news/2019/03/25/turbo-for-garrett-nissan/

And a similar looking turbo noted here:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Garrett-TB0306-Turbocharger-Fits-1981-1987-Nissan-T3-300ZX-Engine-1442-P9002X-/254788678557

If anyone has thoughts on these units (e.g. how reliable they are, known issues, etc.) that would be much appreciated. I was looking to use this on a MK2 Ford Escort - either with the native engine or using a Zetec/Duratec.

So, the 0.48 on the turbine housing is the A/R of that housing. Which is SMALL.

The dimensions you've given are not super helpful. The exhaust inlet flange appears to show 55mm on your verniers. That's neither the expected 50mm of a T2 housing nor the expected 58mm of a T3. Can you measure the other dimension across it, and the bolt pattern?

The exhaust housing is definitely Garrett, not Nissan. The dump pipe flange is for Garrett style dumps, not Nissan style.

The compressor housing is Nissan. It may not actually belong to that turbo originally. It may be a Frankenstein, cobbled together.

The measurement across the outside of the compressor inlet is not super helpful. The inner diameter is the useful one. We can see from the verniers that the ID will be only ~55mm and that it hasn't been machined out as part of any highflow work. The actual inducer all the way down at the compressor wheel would be another 10+ mm smaller than that.

Sadly, I'm not familiar enough with dirty old Nissan comp covers to recognise it. It is definitely really old - Nissan comp covers have had flanged outlets for ages. I can't even get a handle on physically how big the turbo is. Wide angle lens distorts percpective.

Hopefully someone else can use the information here.

Ah. I see your response. 280Z would indeed be "dirty old". But....it can't/won't fit both a 280 and a 300. The 280 was an L series straight six. Any turbo for those would be a single turbo, needing to be T3 sized. I guess TB03 is in that ballpark. The 300Z was a VG30 V6. The turbos were single, but obviously the mounting location would be quite different on a V6.

Thanks GTSBoy, don't know much about the 280's or 300's - just going off what the Google results are.

Thanks for the link, there seems to be some reference in there to older 300ZX models so maybe this is on the right track.

I'll measure the other dimension of the exhaust outlet and the compressor inlet ID and get back to you.

    • After @Kinkstaah debacle, I'd never want to try and get it right 😛
    • The hood lines up with the fenders. The front bar doesn't perfectly line up with the fenders where the wheel arch is. You have to 'squeeze' the front bar 'in' as it wants to naturally flare out and be longer on the sides. There's a few threads where people notice this when they only swap a GTR style bumper and front bar. Unless you have genuine OEM items - you may be better served getting conversion kits. There are GTT bumpers to fit GTR hoods. There are GTR hoods (non genuine) to fit the GTT bracketry. MAY
    • The real question is, on some of those wild roads they call highways, how many times did a farmer in an old ute from the early 2000s blaze past you over double lines?   Tassie is a wild and really cool place, and after doing a work related road trip there January of 24, I understand why Targa Tasmania is ran there, and is so tough to do well at! We had a brand new Camry Hybrid that handled quite nicely, and thankfully weren't in an old car, because cresting some of those hills in a 100kmh zone for it to suddenly be like "surprise f**kers, this is a recommended 30kmh hard right turn" wouldn't be pretty. We weren't racing the Camry around, but we weren't slouching in the bends either. But my lord those old farmers know their old clapped out utes, and those roads, as they were absolutely hammering it!   You're also super lucky to make it up to Mt Wellingtong this time of year. It's often road closed with snow/ice! Also, I hope you hit up Salamander Road in Hobart for some insanely good food (I highly recommend the dimly lit Irish pub for a Guiness Pie, or even the bangers and mash!!!)   How long did the Ferry take to get across? I want to do a road trip of Tas on my own time, but I get horrifically sea sick, and I don't want me on the Ferry, just the car 😛
    • So far so good, about 30km on it so far and nothing out of sorts yet thankfully
