Hello Everyone,

Figured id introduce myself and make a thread of my car and progress while in ownership. I have always wanted to have a BNR34 but never thought it would my achievable due to living in the states and knowing prices would be sky high. I ended you moving to Japan due to work for a 5year term/tour and a year later after being in Japan I drove up to Chiba Prefecture from Yamaguchi Prefecture (14hr drive) to TopRank to look and decided to make the purchase. I am glad that i did because it felt like overnight the prices shot up to 100k+. Before delivery i had TopRank perform timing belt, water pump, and pulley job since it was due so that was a little bonus before getting the vehicle.

I come from Subies when i was in the States so im used to everything you do to a car needs a tune haha. Im new to the platform of Skyline Gtrs but i have been learning along the way. The R34 GTR is pretty much stock besides a trust catback exhaust and some no name coilovers that were on the car ( these were very harsh ). It is also on the higher KM end (216,000 KM) but it overall in decent condition with minimal rust but some is expected being a 20yr car. Since ownership I have replaced a number of maintenance items and the coilovers to HKS Hypermax GT IV 20specs and right after the ride was a lot better.

Car finally arrives from TopRank in Chiba Prefecture around October 2020 (Purchased the car around Aug/Sep2020) and overcome by happiness haha. One of the 1st things that I did was fix the MFD screen, there is a thread here on SAU that walks you through and it was a challenge specially getting the film to lay down correctly. Overall i was happy since it only costed like $20-30 and couple hours of my time but i still want to buy one from one of the guys that sells them for like $250 for a spare. You can see its not 100% perfect but it is better than it was before.

Soon after the small MFD fix i installed the HKS Hypermax GT IV 20specs at the hobby shop on base and soon after i took a nice evening shot in front of the house im living in during my stay in Japan. I also changed out the amber lights for the clear Nismo option and I believe it makes the car look better. Also got a quick photo with the Kentai Bridge in the background

One of the last things i did with the car before being station in the middle of the ocean for 6months was go to Takata Circuit in Hiroshima Prefecture and while doing so i accidently crashed a shops reserved day but they were cool with it and let me continue on around the track. They had one of their members take photos and he was kind enough to snap a few of my car and send them to me which surprised me. I have ordered a few things while i have been in the middle of the ocean so the car is going get few upgrades/changes when i get back. I have also done a few interior changes but didnt think i would post those photos. Hope this isnt to much for a 1st thread haha.

Ts Takata sucks. Go to Okayama and chase Schumacher’s lap. Power craft is a great shop I used to take my 34 there.
Lastly I feel sorry for you since you are out in Iwakuni that place sucks balls I lived in Japan for over a decade and Iwakuni sucked the life

Beau Brosch, Chey, and Justin are the only people worth talking to about cars over there

There’s this guy from Hong Kong that fixes mfd’s and sells the screens  if you need help I can help you out

oh and it’s Kintai*

Great car, good score!  Plenty of us glad we bought our cars when we did.  I for one would NOT be buying one at today’s values I can assure you!

I presume you’ll take it with you when you move home?

Haha yeah Takata was a bit on the sucky side. Seemed more for point and shoot cars since the track seemed really tight lol. I will defiantly look into Okayama after doing some maintenance on the car (Brakes and Tires). Not sure if i heard of Power-Craft, in Shizuoka Prefecture?.... but i have heard good things about a shop in Hiroshima named RiO that's supposedly pretty good to the Gtrs. Any good things of them ?

Yeah Justin seems like good people, i see him pop up in the Iwakuni base car page and may have met him once but not sure. I honestly dont mind Iwakuni, i like the country aspect of it and being able to live 30mins away from base is even a better plus for me haha  (I'm the only American in my little town).

Would defiantly inquire about a 2nd MFD screen for a spare but at the moment i cant order much because of being TDY in the middle of the ocean but possibly after returning to Japan. Thanks for the Correction on the Bridge haha

I'm jealous i couldn't snag one a year or 2 prior ( was saving my pennies for one) but i was lucky enough to snag a decent one before the prices flew to the moon with Dogecoin lol. I defiantly wouldn't have gotten one if i would have waited any longer.

Yeah that plan it to take it with me whenever my term in Japan is over. In the meantime i have been replacing maintenance items and ordering parts since they seem a bit cheaper in Japan vs Stateside. One of my goals is to send it to Garage Yoshida for a chassis refresh before departing but shall see on that one.

Powercraft is in Yanai they also spanked a mines car at Tsukuba in one of the best motoring in the days of old. Haven’t heard of the shop in Hiro. Yeah Okayama is the shit and if you can make it out to the eastern Japanese tracks they get even better

I couldn’t stand it there I lived in Minami Iwakuni and in Hozu and my neighbors gave me so much grief with my GTR. Plus the landlords try to play the gaijin game

[email protected] Is the guy with the mfd stuff  I haven’t talked to him in years but he fixed my mfd

light blue car is mine
white is the powercraft demo car.

Dang thats a good feat since Mine's usually seems to dominate most shops. Took me a while to search and find the shop in Yanai online but i was able to. I defiantly will be making a pit stop by the shop since its a lot closer to my house 20mins vs RiO at 1 hour 30mins lol. Im gathering bits to get get a motor rebuild/refresh since im over 200K kms but before i got the car the compression blew between 170-180 psi for all cylinders which seems good for the amount of Kms on the car. Maybe already had a engine refresh in its time ? my luck probably not. But i will be looking for a shop to do the work and closer would be better  but at the same time i wouldn't mind sending it further up if i need to.

I defiantly will try to make my next stop at the Okayama track and report back with my thoughts.

Luckily i have a housing agent that deals with the landlord and since working at the naval base i usually dont have anything to worry about. They cut my yard for free 2 times a year and come fix anything that needs fixing. My neighbors seem to like me so far since i have been there. The Gtr isnt loud but not quite but i usually tend to try and stay peacefully specially at night when i am pulling into my garage.  I have a neighbor across the street that comes and looks at the car whenever i am washing it in font of my house followed by a japanese guy who like to stop and shit chat with me in Japanese while he walks his dog, more like a 1 way convo since i dont speak Japanese haha. Overall i don't think my neighbors have any complaints specially since im usually not there 3-6 months out of the year lol.

Thanks for the email, i will send him a message whenever im back and see if he has spares that i could buy. Mine isnt terrible as of yet since i did my little diy fix that i got from SAU.

    • The fab work can be as simple as a couple of silicon hoses and clamps to the factory piping.
    • Just sounds like either way you need to do some fab work to get everything to fit, so why limit yourself at that point? If the GCG high flow option is zero effort in and out swap though I'd probably do that. It's almost certainly lowest risk, lowest cost, etc. The HKS GTIII-RS option that Kapr mentioned is laughably expensive for what it is, they charge the exact same for two turbos on the RB26 so their margins are off the charts on that thing.
    • Intake manifold is not a part of the issue. The turbo bolts to the exhaust manifold. That is easy. But close your eyes and picture the physical situation. That is a T3 flange on the manifold and a T3 flange on the turbo. As long as any new turbo has a T3 flange on the exhaust housing, that exhaust housing will bolt to the exhaust manifold. This places the exhaust housing in the same place as the stock one. But now move your mental attention a little further forward. The location of the compressor housing is set by the length of the turbo's core. The stock turbo had a long core. Let's say that it is..... 100mm long. So that would place the compressor housing 100mm forward of the exhaust housing. But a highflow, might well have a centre core that is shorter. Let's say that it is only 70mm long. Now the compressor housing will be 30mm further back in the engine bay than the stock one. This DOES move the turbo's compressor outlet backwards. It also moves the compressor's inlet backwards. You will very likely have to do some work to both the inlet and outlet piping to make everything connect again. I am not say this to make it out to be a bigger deal than it is. I am just pointing out that "bolt on" is sometimes not quite bolt on. The highflow from GCG that Murray linked above (https://gcg.com.au/turbo-charger-upgrade-skyline-gtst-2iu-xtrgts-s1.html ) uses a core that is the same length as the stock core, and so does not require this extra work. It will look very much like the stock turbo. No-one uses GTR turbos of any flavour (stock, or aftermarket) in a single turbo application on RB20/25. It's not a thing. Yes, people have been putting on GT3076, GTX3076 (and bigger and smaller versions of those) and G30s (of various sizes) onto RB20/25 since forever. But these are not "bolt on". Everything except the 4 bolts to the exhaust manifold change with these. And genuine Garretts are expensive. Non-gen, like Pulsar, etc, are cheaper, variously as good or nearly as good. But still not bolt on. No-one in the right mind would pay for an HKS turbo. Not in this modern day and age. Well, yes, the GCG highflow. You could ask HG what he can do to make the compressor housing sit in the original location. There are surely others doing highflows around the world. And some of the eBay/Temu ones (as reported by Dose) work and don't die. Bit of a lottery though. I would send your turbo to GCG (here in Oz) to be highflowed if you want a trivial no-extra-work option. But seriously, the work required to change inlet and outlet piping is not that hard. That's a boost control problem, not a turbo problem.
    • Thank you all for the replys 🙂 I know that intake would be different but that is one pipe at it is not that hard to get(custom one). I meant mainly bolt to the stock manifold and the turbo elbow. I looked and many sites/forums but they are just "old" with some old HKS turbos from GT-R i guess? What about some Garrets?  Or any other turbo? Is there even a turbo which i can just bolt on? 😄 And yeah i know about that new HKS but that is like 2000k USD without taxes/shipping in here   Iam getting a touch up tune but my "problem" is that on the "not" hot day iam getting peaks around 0,9 bar...and when it was around 15 Celsious i saw peak around 1 bar which is just too much for stock turbo. And of course turbo is old and i like to get some new one for a piece of mind 🙂
    • I'm working on the assumption that our friend Jasmine here is a Russian (or, possibly Ukrainian) spammer/spambot, based purely on the number of such that I have been having to neuter in the last few weeks. IP address for the OP above was in WA. But that could have been via VPN. Posting at quarter to 4 in the morning is a good sign of being from somewhere in Europe. The last Jasmine that I kicked in the cooch was IP addressed in Ukraine. Even that could have been via VPN, and the bitchbot could have been from Russia, Serbia, China or anywhere. Regardless, was a spambot, so I killed it with fire. The fact that our new friend Jasmine here did not respond in any way to my tart query strongly suggests to me that this OP was just the establishment phase of a user able to be activated for spamming in a week, or 3 or 10.
