HICAS on Stageas

Guys I think none of the C34 had them except perhaps the 260RS...can check tonight.

The M35 does...but who needs HICAS???

Did I mention they are so much a nicer car :D, I know Rezz is sick of hearing me say that...also M35 series 2 is now out!

i'm pretty sure that some higher spec RS4's from '97 on had hicas, my wgnc34 doesn't have it but i must say that the gab wagon height and damper adjustable coilovers i was lucky enough to find from a reputable jap parts shop in kirawee, syd. far exceed my expectations. they had them for about 8 months waiting for the day when someone had the foresight for the rs4's potential. the caster/camber settings give incredible grip and handling in all corners and bends, especially sweeping right hand corners. OOHHHHH and the way she squats at 3,500 rpm/ 11psi launch, 2-3 sec minimal wheel spin then brake off, nose up....sheee's goooonne... Beat '02-'03 rex by meter :headspin: .....ohhh ATTESSA.....

HICAS stands for Hich Capacity Activly-Controlled Suspension.

What it actually means, is that the stagea is fitted with 4-wheel steering.

The Japanese became interested in the idea of 4-wheel steering, and continued to experiment with it. Nissan's Super-HICAS system is an electronically controlled electrohydraulic system, as opposed to the simpler mechanical system. It was felt that the more complex system offered a better result than the simpler mechanical linkage. In a mechanical system, the rear wheels turn with the front wheels at the same rate. Using HICAS, however, an electronic control unit takes data from the steering wheel, and front wheels, and together with the car's current speed and other parameters, decides on the angle to which the rear wheels should turn. The rear wheels are then turned via a hydraulic cylinder. All of this happens instantly, and the system will constantly reposition the rear wheels for optimum effect, steering them either in the same, or the opposite direction to the front wheels depending on the situation. The HICAS system is superior to the mechanical system in that I provides faster, more reliable response, improves stability on curves, and eliminates abnormal car behavior during rapid direction changes such as those encountered in emergency situations. The HICAS system contains an emergency fail safe which locks the rear wheels in the standard fore-and-aft position if anything goes wrong, effectively turning the car back into a two-wheel steering system.

Hrmm.. run a data stream on the car jake?  Not sure how much it is on a 260rs.. but only cost 100bucks to datastream a r34, so I would assume the same. for stageas. :P

As I said I would check...I was half right, same as Mad Wagon.

As we all know the 260RS has Super Hicas, the only other C34 Stagea which has Super Hicas is the 11% of 5MT RS Four S from late 98 onwards.

I mentioned the M35 has Super Hicas and the 2 models are AR-X and 250t RS Four V HICAS.

Again I ask...Who needs HICAS?

260rs @ 1720kg.+..2 adults...2 kids ,prams and the rest = approx 1900kg + approx340hp divided by corner and curves between brisbane and adelaide =...I WANT MY HICAS

anyway hicas is excellent in a 4wd system ,would not have a gtr without it..2wd & hicas maybe different matter but i do appreciate it combined with the 4wd attessa and i`m thinking it will "lighten up" the 260 thru corners.....in fact the engineers who designed the system may have been "thinking" the same thing....funny bout that

My point is HICAS is really an old system just like the whole Attesa 4WD system, you could say at least it still does the job but obviously Nissan felt no need to have 4Ws on a normal family wagon. That's just it, a wagon with an RB engine not a sports car...bar the 260RS, Autech out to prove you can make a brick move or rather the whole whackiness of the Japanese scene. You can try and drift a Stagea, I have and a manual one, dam thing didn't like corners too much.

The whole 4WS was another 90's fad, but people still buy it right.

But don't you have a 260RS? Jake, your one of the lucky ones then.

yes bought the "top of the touring wagon" as the blurb says..hopefully to do some top touring..not to much drifting with the wife and kids

to cut a long story short after working on (compliance)on skylines since1996 under low volume (cpa for r32 ) i was determined to end up with a GTR at the end of the last system ..which i did ..but also two baby boys in the last 3 years born 01 & 03 ..so gtr dream drive car went out the window .. it sat in driveway for x months ..manage to do about 100klms on trade plate around town..then sold it to justin fox on this forum who continually posts about how much fun he`s having in his GTR.. not happy...but now i have closest thing to a gtr with room for everyone..even as you point out its brick appearance..im` only really interested in the driveline...RB26 with pods and pipe is just the sweetest sound and the couple of times i`ve driven this really reminds of the gtr.. it doesn`t seem to feel the xtra weight (ecu has been done as well) it suprised me how quick and easy to handle it is really

i just need to get hicas sorted ,30-40 mm lower springs,decent rubber,dvd player for da boyz and i`m ready to do some top touring..my family in sydney ..wifes in adelaide..

oh yeah one other thing i`m going to need ...a FU*KIN compliance plate...come on FORD do the farkin test...

    • The best setting for street is what gives the best tyres wear for your driving style Different tyres like different camber You want the whole surface of the tread to wear flat, if the inside of the tyre is wearing more than the outside reduce camber settings For toe, have the minimum amount to give the handling you want Caster, from my experience if you can adjust it, is as much as you can get without clearance issues And while -2.5° of camber on the front might work well with good tyres for "spirited" cornering, it may be too much for a street car Lots of front camber will effect braking Just like to much rear camber will effect rear traction (rwd), and braking  When I set my Bogan Cruise Ship (VX SS) up for drags I tested how much tyre width I actually had in the rear by doing a hard launch (skid), it originally had -1.5° in the rear, and you could see that the tyre wasn't putting down alot of the tread, I maxed out the settings to get as little camber as I could with the OEM adjustment and some camber bushings and got it down to just under -0.5° with 0 toe, that gave me a fair bit more "rubber on the road" and helped it hook up for my 60' and my 0-100kph And with -1.5° in the front the big old boat handles fine on the street and my tyre wear is nice and even on both front and rear tyres (currently Hankook RS4's) As for semi slicks at the track, again, it depends on alot more IRT the suspension, the track and lots of other things, so, I'll leave that up to people who have more experience, especially with a AWD In saying this, street settings are pretty easy, just look at the tyre wear Meh, Necro thread, it's late at night, and I has been drinking beer
    • Thought I'd give an update. There needs to be scarce details in some areas due to ongoing discussions. Here's the journey of trying to make the booked registration appointment (again). Sent a complaint to Car Inspect outlining the concerns and made some demands. Went to a service center in Geelong, got assaulted with bullshit items on the RWC, as you know. Tried to quote $2.5k AND wanted a structural report Only seemed to be one place around Geelong that does them, they demand $495 just to end up telling me it's f**ked, at least $11k to fix and tried to sell me his own Skyline in the process (bro, wtf?) Started stressing about what I'm supposed to do with this possible pile of steel. Awaiting that, I was sent an angel friend who works in Melbourne and knows real mechanics and body shops.  They laughed at the reported quotes (don't get work done in Geelong) Car underwent some front surgery and brought back better They then sent it to the mechanics for RWC Registration appointment is two days away at this point. Mechanics pointed out two issues: driver's seat and shocks - that's it. He offered couple options and I chose coilovers. Frantically I scoured the jungle realm that is Facebook Marketplace (again). Found what looks to be a decent Series 1 seat actually - $100 Guy is friendly, offers to bring the seat with a colleague who's heading to Geelong (thanks man, that was cool) Seat arrived, looks good. Throw it in my car and drive to Melbourne and drop it to mechanic T-1 day, mechanic reckons job will be done for the fronts only, gets it done by 4PM Mechanic heads to get the coil-overs that night as a favour to help me make the appointment Get driven to Melbourne, drove the car back - RWC Unlocked! ✅ VicRoads tomorrow, the goal is close now. 🙂
