hay guys iv been seeing all the conversions to turbo but what about supercharging the rb25de that would have to increase the power and still have all the reliebilty of the na so what do people think and who could i get to do this in melbourne Victoria. any info would be great

hey, i have heard from a friend of a friend that he did the same thing, he said it went well and didnt cost a bucket but he broke the gts gear box and upgraded to the r33 gtst box. never had a problem since. not sure of where it was done though sorry. good luck

anyways, a guy in melb has done it, and for the money spent he gets less rwkw than a stock GTSt does. However looking at his dyno chart, due to the difference in compression in his engine and the linear boost of a supercharger, he has a much nicer torque curve and better response out of the car at lower RPMS.

So basically it comes down to what type of person you are... are you :

a) a traffic light drag superstar ;)

or

B) a dyno figure bragger :D

I've looked into it greatly (to the point of getting exact part numbers required for the conversion and finding someone willing to fabricate the manifolds, and buy parts like a supercharger off a Toyota Straight 6 Engine, a Q45 Throttle body, and my fujitsubo extractors). then decided against it and went n bought a TD0625G :)

If you need some insight into it search for "supercharge RB". I've had numerous highly enlightening discussions with people on this on various threads.

Go to search, look up "supercharging" or "supercharged"or something along those lines, i had a monster thread on this about prolly 9months or more ago. I was keen on the idea, but the means and the $$$ dont justify the end result IMO.

I feel the engine bay in my r32 was just to cramped for decent sized charger, and finding turbo accesories is just so much easier, coz thats whats intended. It was decided that a charger worth fitting to justify the hassel was going to cost about 3k........2 k more you got the rb25 half cut.......alot of expensive fabrication and stuffing around, labour costs start to look similar.....but hell!!! I'm all for ppl wanting to be different. So if you wanna do it.........go for it!!

P.S - The compression of an NA engine was one of the stumbling pionts, there were 2 ways around this outlined in my thread, i propose a 3rd. Swapping to the N/A series 2 vl bottom end...compression down to 8.5.1 or 8.7.1 - sometihng around that mark

    • And one last super random thought, I remember when SAUNSW had a dinner with Alan Heaphy, and another with Fred Gibson there was talk of the R32 GTR cast alloy uprights failing in racing, and one of the things Fred did when they had to add weight to the vehicle was taken the failing alloy uprights, and have them made of steel. Does anyone remember back to 1990/1991/1992 and WHAT was failing in the front hubs/uprights?
    • If you truly want to know how the original failed though, was it a factory defect possibly etc, send it off for investigation. Would probably cost a shit tonne.   The ones that you need to win lotto for, unless you have a good reason for that part to be bolt on, I'd probably roll with getting a few small stitch welds carefully put in place as an extra safety factor once everything is all torqued up tight
    • Are you sure? Because I wouldn't necessarily be. Do we even know the material they've made the new uprights from?   Looking at the fractures in the earlier pics, it does to me look like both a twisting, and levering upward action doing the damage, so you're hoping for both compression, and tension. Depending on the bolts, they can stretch (even high grade bolts will) and now you're hoping for the threads themself not to stretch, as if they do, bye bye mating surfaces holding together, hello bolts now going into shear.

    • That's probably OK. That's a face to face compression joint between two surfaces with the clamping load provided by those bolts. So.... it's unlikely that the bolts will end up feeling that load in shear, unless the clamping surfaces are not large enough, bolts not got enough tension on them, etc etc to prevent the two faces from moving wrt each other. Which... I would hope the designers have considered, seeing as it's probably one of the most important things the upright has to do apart from resist collapsing in its own right. But yes, it would definitely be worth asking them what their safety factor on that part of the design was. I tend to think that the casting, being a casting, is not necessarily the strongest bit of material in the world. It's about an inch square, and when you think about the loads that are being put into it, you have to wonder what safety factor the Nissan boys (and every other OEM engineer who has designed all the millions of other uprights that look essentially the same) used to account for defective casting, aging, severe impacts on the wheel, etc etc.
