Hiya, I have been researching tyres for the months while waiting for my import to arrive... the day has finally come and it will get some new rubber and a compliance badge this week (yay!) so I have got down to two tyre choices...

Bridgestone S03 or Falken 451.

In WA tyre costs stupid amounts, and the 451s in 235/45/17 and 255/40/17 are about $1400 which is about the same as the S03's, so cost is not a real deciding factor.

Whats the pick?

I like the 451's for looks, curb guard (I dont think the S03 has one) to protect my new mags, and seem to get good reviews, and supposed good tread life and wet weather grip, quiet.

The S03's sound like a technically superior tyre, but I hear they need regular rotation to avoid tramlining (a problem with differing tyre sizes front to rear) and have short tread life, although are awesome in the wet.

I have also had a few people tell me they let go pretty abrubtly whereas the 451 gives you plenty of warning.

Anyone got any comments on any of this? Without trying them myself its hard to find out which is a better tyre, but I would like to try and make the right decision :D

I had SO-2's on my GTR and they were awesome. Now i need new tyres and looking at SO-3's. The tyre guy tells me they are better than SO-2's but i too want to know if anyone else has had experiences.

And they cost $500.00 each

My tyre sizes are 265/35/18 all round.

Cheers

Im all for saving money, but to save money on Tyres and brakes is the worst thing you can do in a car. I hope you have never been or will be in a comprising situation with your car and another where the difference between good tyres and bloody good tyres is your damage.

I think everyone has had shite tyres on their cars at one time or another, but i have been in a situation where my tyres let me down and if i had a good set on then i would have been ok.

Cheers

I believe that it is not the saving of money which is the issue but your choice of tyres and brakes which is important, if you can get the same quality for cheaper then hey ... Im all for saving money ...and all for having good brakes and tyres...

I have been running a set of Falken Azenis tyres (they are a semi slick bottom range race tyre...too crap to race but too soft for the road type of thing) 225-50-16's for $190 ea.

They have lasted about 10,000kms... not bad really. They are about as grippy as a normal tyre when cold, if you really go for a blast and get them warmed up they perform quite well. One of the main benefits is the stiffer sidewall, very predictable etc.

Cheers

    • I'm normally copping my own abuse from neglecting my daily drivers. "Those suspension bushes will last a bit more", "Don't worry about the oil leak, just keep topping it up". The project cars I'm always doing things slowly on them as I'm wanting them to be done better, and neater, and nicer. Luckily I don't have to deal with 18 year old Matt's "Learning to wire" stuff in the project cars. And there's only one piece of wiring I'm displeased about in the Landcruiser, and it's about to be cut out... However, the box loads of parts that have been going through this place lately for the Landcruiser... Brake pads Brake Rotors Full handbrake overhaul Wheel Bearings Seals Swivel hubs Steering Boxes Half the suspension joints Shocks Air bags (Ones to go in the rear springs for towing) Water pump Timing kit Lower timing case Harmonic Balancer Radiator Lots of other little seals and shits Gas struts for the bonnet New power window switches And god knows what else I've forgotten... Ha ha ha I have my fingers crossed the pinion seals don't start leaking on the diffs, that the transfer case doesn't leak, and the gearbox input shaft doesn't leak, nor the rear main seal. As they're about the only seals I haven't replaced in the driveline! I'm seriously eyeing off buying new caliper rebuild kits front and rear brake calipers... I'll probably recheck all the valve clearances soon too, and hopefully, it should be all good and sweet to haul some long distance trips again!
    • Every time I pull my 3x gauges out of the console and see the crack-addict way that I did the wiring, and I just can't bring myself to tear it all apart and "make it nice", because it is currently working. In fact, the last time I was in there I probably made it worse.
    • The best part is when you own the car long enough that you look back and find your OWN ham fisted amateur shit!
    • The annoying part about neglect, is when you start to replace one thing, and find ten more broken things. Ham fisted monkey repairs you normally only find out about when trying to do something unrelated! Ha ha   Neglect you can kind of anticipate the huge costs to fix it all. Ham fistedness is normally a shock the first time your work on a new old car, as everything "looked" good before.
