fan comes off, timing belt comes off.. valves get out of whack with pistons.. SMACK

Why would the timing belt come off?

The water pump simply broke.

I've heard of that happening when the car has had a front on collision, radiator hits the fan and puts stress on the water pump. Months down the track the water pump will break...

OR... The water pump wasn't replaced at 100,000km's with the cam belt and the bearings have failed causing the fan to go wobbly and even completely snap off.

All the RB's are interference motors.

i've heard of people putting in superchargers successfully with decent results... maybe that's an option.
