Hi all,

edit: i posted this here instead of NSW section due to most ppl posting here + i've searched already

i'm looking at inspecting an r34 gtt on wednesday... just have a couple q's and would appreciate if someone could help answer them.

1) The car has just been compiled but has not been registrated yet. Would the car have been mechanically tested during compliance or should i take it to a workshop just to be sure? This leads to (2)

2) The car is in Wyong, bout 1 - 1 1/2 hrs from SYD, do anyone know any workshops near there as I would not be able to drive it to SYD for inspection. My last option would be to take it to NRMA for inspection, which leads me to ask whether they are a good idea to use?

Big thanks to all

- Eric

Get a workshop to give it a very thorough going over as the compliance process doesn't require that the engine be in great shape. Not in the area so can't recommend anyone for you unfortunately. Also I'd suggest getting a rego inspection done at the same time (pink slip in NSW i think?) because some things that pass compliance may not necessarily pass rego in all states.

Good luck.

I know that where my car is getting complianced, it also gets a FULL service as well. New fluids for everything, new cat, new brake pads. I was surprised about pads, but i'm certainly not complaining. So after a full service the car should be running pretty good, but yeah, wouldn't have any extensive engine checks like NJR said.

I'm not sure how well ppl like NRMA know their imports, sometimes they have like 1 or 2 guys that specialise in them. So maybe give em a call and ask about imports?

good luck

just because the car gets complyed doesnt mean its in good nick , it only means it has certain things done to it to make it comply with adrs .

yea they must change fluids , brake , engine oil + filter, new tyres and new seat belts . as for new brake pads the only have to do themif they are more than 50% worn .

have someone check the car for you and make sure they check the underbody for rust as well .

good luck with it .

oh ok, so brakes are only if less than 50%.

well my car is this compliance places test car, so they are making sure EVERYTHING is spot on. I'm sure my brakes were more than 50% but i guess saves hassle come time canberra checks the car if everything is new anyway. I'm certainly not complaining.

Brake pads must be standard Nissan items when complied which is rarely the case on imports. Can be a huge concern on R34 GTR as they are hard to source in Australia and worth $1000 each end. Not sure if they have to be of a minimum depth.

Hey??? Are you sure about that. Seems a little odd since that isn't the case with the R34 GTT.

Brake pads must be changed regardless of condition as part of the compliance process.

not so under the new rules but yea they must be nissan original part numbers .

yea if you have to change gtr ( brambo ) pads they are very expensive but nothing stoping you from buying one set to pass your car then take them off put them on another car and so on to recoup some of your money !!!

    • Bit of a pity we don't have good images of the back/front of the PCB ~ that said, I found a YT vid of a teardown to replace dicky clock switches, and got enough of a glimpse to realize this PCB is the front-end to a connected to what I'll call PCBA, and as such this is all digital on this PCB..ergo, battery voltage probably doesn't make an appearance here ; that is, I'd expect them to do something on PCBA wrt power conditioning for the adjustment/display/switch PCB.... ....given what's transpired..ie; some permutation of 12vdc on a 5vdc with or without correct polarity...would explain why the zener said "no" and exploded. The transistor Q5 (M33) is likely to be a digital switching transistor...that is, package has builtin bias resistors to ensure it saturates as soon as base threshold voltage is reached (minimal rise/fall time)....and wrt the question 'what else could've fried?' ....well, I know there's an MCU on this board (display, I/O at a guess), and you hope they isolated it from this scenario...I got my crayons out, it looks a bit like this...   ...not a lot to see, or rather, everything you'd like to see disappears down a via to the other side...base drive for the transistor comes from somewhere else, what this transistor is switching is somewhere else...but the zener circuit is exclusive to all this ~ it's providing a set voltage (current limited by the 1K3 resistor R19)...and disappears somewhere else down the via I marked V out ; if the errant voltage 'jumped' the diode in the millisecond before it exploded, whatever that V out via feeds may have seen a spike... ....I'll just imagine that Q5 was switched off at the time, thus no damage should've been done....but whatever that zener feeds has to be checked... • I think Fitmit had some, have a look on there (theyre Australian as well)
    • Hah, fair enough! But if you learn with this one you can drive any other OEM manual. No modern luxury features like auto rev-matching or hillstart assist to give you a false sense of confidence. And a heavy car with not that much torque so it stalls easily.
    • Actually, I'd say all three are the automatic option. Just the different trim levels. The manual would be RSFS, no?
