Jim Berry has been building clutches and clutches only for more than 26 years.

He builds the control clutch for the V8Brute Series in Australia (i.e. the clutch that goes into every single competitors car).

He has built clutches for V8 Supercar teams, Full on drag cars and many many many competitive and championship winning circuit cars/teams.

He is able to re-build and/or modify just about anything you can show him including multi-plate clutches.

I have total faith in his products, expertise and advice. Until someone with MORE experience in this field comes to me and suggests that they know better than Jim (this person doesn't exist), I will continue to buy my clutches from him and recommend others do so too.

In short, I have a vastly superior clutch to what I had in there before and it didn't really cost *that* much more.

In a GTST/GTT (2wd) we use OS Giken Twin Plate, they make a road version that doesn't rattle when unloaded.

In a GTR (4wd) we use OS Giken triple plate.

In Sydney the clutch guru is Steve Thompson at;

Gday Gary

what are ur thoughts on the rebuild kits? or is it better to get a new one? (application is ~350rwkw...currently slipping with twin, would an upgrade to triple be required?)

do the credentials of STEVE THOMPSON match that of JIM BERRY ;)

thanx

Steve

In a 2wd a twin plate would be OK at 350 rwkw as long as it is in good condition and set up properly. As for rebuild, the pressure plate and intermediate plate need to be serviceable, that means not needing or able to be machined. If they are not, then a complet new one is cheaper. Clutch plates are rebuildable altough most times we end up with a new pair.

I don't know Jim, but Steve is closer, does plenty of race cars and has been for many years, he raced/rallied himself. I haven't found any reason to go elsewhere:cheers:

Extream 5 Puk single plate clutch with pressure plate, Sprung center - Around $800
I have the same clutch as Cameron........i can't speak highly enough of it........it holds well, bites well, yet is VERY comfortable to use on the street.

The problem with multi polate clutches is that they wear out just as quick as a single plate........yet cost twice as much to purchase and/or re-co...........

It sounds as though thats the clutch that was installed in my car...my advise dont go drag racing with it...the fact that it didnt handle pretty casual launches makes me think how it will go loaded up in 3rd and 4th gear at the circuit. It seems to be a decent clutch for street driving, but it is nowhere near as good as the UAS GTR puck clutch that was in the car:(

Steve Thompson did my three button sprung center clutch . It uses sintered iron buttons rather than sintered bronze . I got three years out of it and its been rebuilt and in my current car . Steve was good enough to take me into his work shop and plan a clutch around my needs . From std to extreme I would not go anywhere else .

Cheers , Adrian .

    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
    • So, now all you need to do is connect the 2 or 3x 12v feeds into the unit to permanent 12v, ACC 12V and IGN 12V that you can find in the spot behind the stereo, and the earth, and then it will switch on with the car.
