Is this type of thing only used in cars with the stock air boxes? Is it to funnel air between the bonnet lid and the grill to the air filter?

If not what's it for?

The standard airfilter box gets its ambient air via the snorkel from in front of the radiator. The under bonnet is curved to allow this ambient (unheated) air into the snorkel. If you put an air deflector on, then there is nowhere for the snorkel to get its air, the air deflector closes the space that it breathes from.

To overcome this I have fabricated a scoop that picks up ambient air and directs it through the air deflector and at the snorkel mouth. This should be even better than standard when moving, as the air will be forced into the scoop and thus into the mouth of the snorkel. It's a win win.

I have seen quite a few RB25DET PODs that use the standard snorkel pointing at the POD. Sometimes there is heat shield with a hole cut in it for the snorkel. This system (on the Stagea) of having a scoop to the snorkel mouth would work OK in that situation as well.

Hope that helps:cheers:

Thanks SKid that does help - I understand now.

That's what the scoop in the air deflector does. Fair enough - What's the air deflector do? (heh I sound like Ralph).

Is it to deflect the heated air from the radiator/engine away from the inlet to the air filter?

The air deflectors make sure that all of the air that goes in through the grill (top and bottom) goes through the intercooler, transmission cooler, power steering fluid cooler or radiator. That none of it goes over the top of the radiator when the bonnet lifts at speed.

Plus, as you said, it stop the hot air from the coolers getting into the inlet snorkel, mostly at low speeds.:)

Hi SK,

Have you got any piccys of the deflector on the car yet?

Cheers!

Nope, too much work to do on the race cars. I haven't been able to get the bends quite right to clear the under bonnet bump. So I have made a couple of changes to the design, that I will finish during the week. But I hope to have it on this weekend:cheers:

any more progress on the air deflector sk? i know its christmas so no rush just thought you may have had a mintue of 2 to snap some piccies for you fellow stagea fans :(

As you may have seen in another thread, I have fitted a large transmission cooler. I wanted to do that before I finished the air deflector just in case I had to change its mounting or shape. I have finished a new air inlet scoop, it is a bit deeper and has folded sides, to catch and flwo the air a little better. Boxing day sounds like a good time to finish off the deflector itself and do the final install.

As well as pictures, I will draw, scan and post up the templates so the designs can be duplicated. A few people have said they like the new scoop, which can be used on its own (ie; without the deflector).

Merry Xmas:cheers:

It's finally complete, this is a picture of the finished air deflector fitted to the Stagea. It is held in place by 3 standard bolts (left to right in the picture) the horn bracket (12mm socket), the bonnet catch (12 mm socket) and the air con condenser (10 mm socket). It is slotted into the top of the grill at the front.

The scoop is held in place by the standard air inlet snorkel clips and this is what the incoming air sees through the grill;

Tomorrow, if it is a hot day, I will test the inlet air temperatures to make sure the scoop is functioning. I have 2 sensors and temperature guages, one I will fit to the front of the grill and I will stick the other in the inlet air stream inside the snorkel itself. This will test that only ambient temperature air is getting to the airfilter. If it is successful I will post up the templates for the air deflector and the scoop, which you could use without the air deflector if you wanted.

Hope this is of some use, Happy New Year :P

sk that looks pretty good. its a bit different to the initial design though isnt it?

will be interesting to see the final results of testing

Yep, I had to change the design where it attaches to the radiator support panel (RSP). The original template was attached to the top of the RSP, but the Stagea RSP isn't straight, it bends backwards (towards the winscreen) once outside the line of the radiator. This meant I couldn't bend the air deflector downwards to clear the bump in the bonnet strengthener. So I had to resort to mounting the air deflector to the front of the RSP, and low enough so that it didn't need bending. That way I could use the same flat piece of aluminium, with the tabs for the mounting bolts being the only bends required.

Since I had to modify the deflector, I took the opprtunity to make the inlet air scoop bigger (longer) at the same time. Plus I incorporated the sides of the scoop into the one piece, eliminating the joins.

I am only going to test the air temperature this week. When I finish the Jaycar boost controller and fuel adjuster, I will try it on the dyno with the bonnet up and down. That will tell me if I have sufficient airflow from the scoop to the air filter snorkel.

:P

That's great work SK. I've got two large pieces of 2mm aluminium sheeting that have been anodised black that will suit this project perfectly :)

I'm pretty keen to see how the Jaycar kits go too. I was keen to try one on the R33 before it went to heaven, but never got a chance :P
