What are the controls on a R34 steering wheel for?

My uncle just picked it up and we're trying to work out what they're used for? Its a tiptronic gearbox. Is it for gear changing? Radio controls? Cruise control?

its for gear changes, if u look down towards the top/right of ur gear lever, there should be a button to turn it on.

Ah ok, was wondering what that switch did :)

So its got the controls on the right land left side of the steering wheel, Im assuming you can use either to change gears up or down?

And to be able to change using the steering wheel controls, does it have to be in tiptronic mode as well, ie not in [D]rag mode?

oooh.. sorry to hijack but whilst on the same subject.

is it bad to keep changing to manual mode whilst driving? i have a really bad habit of changing to manual mode and then downshifting when approaching a red light.

also, weird thing happened to day.. was in manual mode and stopped at a roundabout.. the tcs, slip and hicas light went on and i "stalled" wtg? how does this happen? who stalls on an auto? my car is stock btw.. weird, but there a first to everything i guess

i would of thought that if an auto car has a tiptronic option then you should be able to change driving styles as you wish.

but i would think that it would be causing extra strain on the gearbox when you keep on changing styles. Maybe best thing to do is choose to stay in Drive or just keep it in tipronic mode and not change constantly...maybe ask a nissan dealer some time and see thier opinon

That depends entirely on the logic that controls the triptronic function. If it holds gears so you can bounce off the rev limiter, only down shifts if your about to stall, matches revs and blips the throttle, and changes quickly, then yes they can pretty much be driven how you want.

However, most don't do all (or any) of those things and seeing as the R34 GT-T implementation is old (by tiptronic standards) I doubt its terribly advanced.

LW.

ecl: From experience changing from triptronic (manual mode) to full auto on up shift is bad! :D the engine/gearbox dont sound too happy.. on shift down seems to be fine. Going from full auto to triptronic (manual mode) dont seem to have any problem at all at least to me anyway.

2c worth. :D

thanks everyone

Thats a switch for a valve in the exhaust. Factory option.

Either allows more flow and louder or less flow and quieter.

Unfortunately the valve tends to get stuck due to the gunk in exhaust gases combined with temperature and water.

no offence to yourself or your uncle tez, cos you've chosen very wisely ;) but did you guys looking into buying a R34 at all or did you just go and get one, one day? please don't read a condescending tone into that, cos there is absolutely none, but i'm just curious that you'd go out and buy a R34 and not know what the buttons on the steering wheel are for?

Did the yard/private owner not tell you about the car? Did you take it for a spin?

Anyways, happy driving. And if you could fill us in on the car, that would be great! ;) Ie, colour, 2/4 door, any mods??

cheers.

Thanks for everyones help.

He did take the car for a test drive and that stuff, but probably not as thorougly as one should have ie test everything. Although he had been looking for a R34 for a long time, in tiptronic, and in good condition, and this one was.

Its got about 35,000km with book (??) and is in immaculate condition. No modes for it, and I dont think there are mods planned as yet. No pics yet, although the car looks *exactly* the same as yours in the sig, although with different wheels. Even down to the rear coathanger

    • Checked with amayama and nope, the full S2 manual set is not available anymore. Unsurprising, but still disappointing as the ? on availability gave a glimmer of hope.
    • I've heard the Tomei USA head gaskets are decent if you want to o-ring the heads but otherwise not recommended.
    • The 296mm rotors are the R33 turbo brakes. The 310mm rotors are the R34 turbo brakes. The calipers are nearly the same, but not. They're the same caliper but the R34 caliper has longer legs so that it sits out far enough to go over the rotor. The pads are the same for both. When you say, "I bough tsome EBC"....did you just mean pads? Or rotors? 310mm rotors fit under 17" wheels. There may be some wheels without enough clearance though. I can't fit my fingers between the barrel of my wheel and the "corners" of my R34 calipers, but there is plenty of room behind the spokes. This is on Enkei RPF1. You can fit 324mm rotors inside a 17" wheel, but I'd be willing to bet that it would be close to impossible with the Nissan/Sumitomo caliper (using an adapter, of course), because the Sumitomo caliper is fatter than the Brembo caliper that is supposed to go on the 324mm rotors.
    • Hi. Can someone tell me what brakes(and mainly WHERE) can i buy brakes on R34 GTT? I bought some EBC which SHOULD go on my car(i have GT but it has GTT brakes) but it does not fit, Brakes are "too" small(296mm) Are 310mm be good or? I have 17 inch wheel so no "big boys" but for me driving i just need one that fits and i can get here in EU/Czech.
    • Since winter isn't that harsh anymore in Poland, i will definetely drive it 365 days a year 😉. But if the snow hits i will try it for sure and let U know. Only swap i am planning to do is of course R34 GTR front 😍.
