SA bulk buy for carbon fibre / fibre glass bonnets.

Recommended Posts

After being inspired by the recent Power FC bulk buy, I am interested in organising a similar, but much smaller, bulk buy for carbon fibre / fibre glass bonnets.

I haven't sorted out any suppliers, prices or styles - I am just seeing if there is any interest. So, yeah, is there?

Even if only one or two other people are interested, we can still save money on freight if not on the actual bonnet also.

Then again, if we can get ~40 people interested like with the Power FC bulk buy, then we might all end up paying $30.00 each. :)

To Pie (and others)

You can buy locally made fibre glass bonnets from silins special vehicles at lonsdale, i paid to have a bonnet made approx 3yrs ago.In the process we had to produce a f/glass replica of std inner and outer, take copies of these and modify them to what i wanted then in turn make a copy of this.this then formed the mould for my modified bonnet. It has billet mc'd steel inserts where it mounts to the hinge and billet mc'd alloy inserts in the catch area. This is very important as the so called"CHEAP" ones from o/seas usually have no latch assembly and i think the screws for the hinges just go into wood or f/glass.I dont know why for the life of me why every one insists on not supporting aussie made nor our technology. So far i spent 6k on producing four moulds for the bonnets, two front spoiler(bar) moulds and a low tough drift wing mould that comes equiped with a nice led brake light.

So you can see all this nice gear IS available in your own backyard, its of exceptional quality and it fits first time which is a lot better than you can say for the imported rubbish thats been floating around.Wally is very helpfull supplies a fitting /repair service and can arrange painting as well. This stuff has gone a long way to us winning our 3 consecutive aust concourse titles and many other trophies as well.If you need further recomendation speak 4dr sleeper(re these forums)

Good luck to all...

Regards,

SKYLINE(Kym).... :headspin:

Do you have pictures of these locally produced bonnets? Are they only for R33s? Because there is already interest from S15 and 180 owners also... And the important question, are they vented and sexy as ****?

As I said, I have no idea about prices etc, I am only gauging interest at this stage. I will do some research when I get a chance. Updates to come.

I will vouch for Kym (skylines) comments, Wally is very helpful and the quality of his work is excellent.

I believe the front bonnet he has at the moment is a series 2, and it has great venting, and looks the part

(hey kym, did you consider getting the first 2 layers done in carbon fiber, I think it would look great if your into carbon fiber bonnets)

Okay, I have an update.

I am basing this arrangement on ten orders, which we should be able to reach.

If you drive an R33, S15 or 180SX [EDIT: or R32, S13 or S14], then you are in luck. Both carbon fibre and fibre glass bonnets will be available in various styles, all of which you would have seen before on Car Mate, etc. Nothing custom or craaazy. Further, the quality is supposedly very good and the bonnets are complete with bonnet latches. Note: I trust this supplier and have bought from him before, but I have not seen his bonnets first hand.

I will probably arrange to have all orders sent to my house and then we can arrange local pick-up. This should save everyone a fair bit on freight costs.

With ten orders, we should save a couple of hundred dollars off retail prices. S15, 180SX and R33 bonnets will all be the same price, with carbon fibre naturally being more expensive than fibre glass. Exact prices are still being arranged, but I will hopefully be able to fill you all in by the weekend.

FYI: I am personally ordering a fibre glass vented bonnet, because the carbon fibre bonnets will be more expensive and, at the end of the day, you are paying for 2-3 layers of carbon fibre that sit over a standard fibre glass bonnet. I don't particularly like the look of carbon fibre and as there's no further weight saving over fibre glass, I'm going for a matte black fibre glass bonnet. But the decision is yours and both options are available.

Who is still keen at this stage?

i know a guy who is making a mould of an r32 bonnet at the moment

its the one that JMS had

its gtr style with built in nismo lip and 1 large vent in the middle.

he only needs to make mounts for the hinges etc...which im trying to help him do.

he said he would sell one to me in fibre glass for $650ish probably less

he can also do it in carbon fibre (hes not sure on price but will be under 1g)

but if u guys are interested as well im pretty sure he can do us all a really good deal.

so how many ppl would be interested in one for their r32 gtst or gtr?

if i can get a rough number i can find out a price...

ill get pics once he has finished the 1st one

sorry he doesnt have any for other models.

yeah interested, but hoping for not too much over the $600 mark if possible. It is only fibreglass after all :P .... especially considering you get a front bumper for around $400, I don't understand how the bonnets are so much more expensive, when obviously lots of work/fibrglass goes into the bumpers and they only cost $400.

That's the price point I am aiming for too, Nightcrawler. I will be able to confirm prices towards the end of the week.

That is true about the price of front bars. I hadn't thought about it like that. But most retailers want ~$800.00 and ~$1200.00 for fibre glass and carbon fibre bonnets respectively, so we will be getting a good deal if we can get the numbers together.

the reason is that a mould for the bonnet is alot more time consuming to make and requires alot more material due to the fact that you need two moulds to make a bonnet. the bottom mould and the top.

if you look close up on an after market bumper u should find that most now days have something wrong with them..for example the surface is wavey, twisted/warped or out of shape. with a front bar u can get away with this kind of stuff but with a bonnet u cant.

i guess if ppl wanted a cheap bonnet it could probably be done but would u be happy with the quality? drop the bonnet down and it cracks? or it doesnt close properly?

i wouldnt want to be driving one day and the latch bakes off.

so if u can find a front bar brand new for around $400 or under..

anyway the r32 mould has taken around 3weeks now and its still not complete.

the guy has put heaps of time into it trying to make it perfect.

when the vent bonnet trend is not as common my mate pick up his R32 bonnet for $600. Now we got numbers and the mould are actually made. can't see why the price will go over $600, IMO $500 is only consider to be reasonable, not cheap.

Top quality Jap made - "Varis" carbon fibre bonnet is only asking $800

sure the price not include postage and tax but u know what i mean

Now i live in Australia and would like to support local

pls allow me to support local :P

we don't have a lot of member in here actually, try NS.com and we should able to get the number of people

    • Cheers. Skyline is back on the menu, can’t get rid of it. It’s like a child you don’t want, or herpes
    • I got back to Japan in January and was keen to get back on track as quickly as possible. Europe is god-awful for track accessibility (by comparison), so I picked up a first-gen GT86 in December just to have something I could jump into right away. The Skyline came over in a container this time and landed in early January. It was a bit battered after Europe, though—I refused to do anything beyond essential upkeep while it was over there. The clutch master cylinder gave out, and so did the power steering. I didn’t even bother changing the oil; it was the same stuff that went in just before I left Japan the first time. Naughty. Power steering parts would’ve cost double with shipping and taxes, so knowing I’d be heading back to Japan, I just postponed it and powered through the arm workout. It took a solid three months to get the car back on the road. Registration was a nightmare this time around. There were a bunch of BS fees to navigate, and sourcing parts was a headache. I needed stock seats for shaken, mistakenly blew 34k JPY on some ENR34 seats—which, of course, didn’t fit—then ended up having the car’s technical sheet amended to register it as a two-seater with the Brides. Then there’s the GT86. Amazing car. Does everything I want it to do. Parts are cheap, easy to find, and I don’t care what anyone says—it’s super rewarding to drive. I’ve done a few basic mods: diff ratio, coilovers, discs, pads, seat, etc. It already had a new exhaust manifold and the 180kph limiter removed, so I assume it’s running some kind of map. I’ve just been thrashing it at the track non-stop—mostly Fuji Speedway now, since I need something with higher speed after all that autobahn time. The wheels on the R34 always pissed me off—too big, and it was a nightmare getting tires to fit properly under the arches. So I threw in the towel and bought something that fits better. Looks way cleaner too (at least to me)—less hotboy, less attention-seeking. Still an R34, though. Now for future plans. There are a few things still outstanding with the car. First up, the rear subframe needs an overhaul—that’s priority one. Next, I need to figure out an engine rebuild plan. No timeline yet, but I want to keep it economical—not cutting corners, just not throwing tens of thousands at a mechanic I can barely communicate with. And finally, paint. Plus a bit of tidying up here and there.
    • Nope, needed to clearance under the bar a little with a heat gun, a 1/2" extension as the "clearancer", and big hammer, I was aware of this from the onset, they fit a 2.0 with this intake no problems, but, the 2.5 is around 15mm taller than a 2.0, so "clearancing" was required  It "just" touched when test fitting, now, I have about 10mm of clearance  You cannot see where it was done, and so far, there's no contact when giving it the beans Happy days
    • It's been a while since I've updated this thread. The last year (and some) has been very hectic. In the second-half of 2024 I took the R34 on a trip through Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland - it was f*cking great. I got a little annoyed with the attention the car was getting around Europe and really didn't drive it that much. I could barely work on the car since I was living in an inner-city apartment (with underground parking). During the trip, the car lost power steering in France - split hose - and I ended up driving around 4,000kms with no power steering.  There were a few Nurburgring trips here and there, but in total the R34 amassed just shy of 7,000kms on European roads. Long story short, I broke up with the reason I was transferred to Europe for and requested to be moved back to Japan. The E90, loved it. It was a sunk cost of around EUR 10,000 and I sold it to a friend for EUR 1,500 just to get rid of it quickly. Trust me, moving countries f*cking sucks and I could not be bothered to be as methodical as I was the first time around.
