LOL...farkin spreadsheets :D I was bored at work and trying to do it covertly. Im half pissed and bored at 12.30am in a hotel...ill try again but cant guarantee the result will be any better considering the state im in :D

that 4th gear comparo for road speed to revs...cool, i need my spreadsheet on my laptop to work it out accurately. What sized tyres have you assumed, (tyre circumference)???

i actually was going to give it a go as well but for some reason this laptop does not have excel on it... random

um, my tyres were 255/40/17's and was about 36.6, but i just worked out my mate with 235/45/17's was around 37.6

somewhere around there so make it around 37 and u will get if fairly accurate

How is that? It seems i had changed the scales to try and move the boost curves away from the power plots, and it all went bad from there...but i think this looks better.

Yeh its pretty easy to do the conversion, but im lost without my laptop, i have all the gear / diff ratio, tyre sizs etc on it.

Cerbera, if my understanding of your Apexi turbo is right, you have the P25 exhaust housing, which is about a 0.96-1.01 A/R housing.

Would love to see your results if you used the smaller P22 housing, dont they also do a P20 or something (IHI use mm instead of inches so i think you just divide the PXX /25.4 to get an equivelant Garrett A/R, so P25 is 25/25.4, so about 0.98 A/R)

The P20 is about an A/R size of 0.78 which would get that thing boosting way earlier and harder

im unaware of how the scale of the apexi to convetional garret a/r works but just looking at the housing it is at least as big as a 0.8a/r

my turbo came only in a p25 or p22 housing so im unsure if you would be able to connect a p20 housing as the actuator mounts may be not suitable ?!?

i do agree with you tho, the p22 housing would probably be much more suitable to the 2l and i doubt i would loose much top end if any

only problem is finding a housing to borrow or buy for the test, apexi turbos dont seem to grow on trees :D

Yeh , i had a bit of trouble finding the smaller housing on the TD06. But im sure that IHI use metric where as Garret use Imperial, so P22 woud be 22/25.4, so about 0.86.

Ill have a look around tomorrow night. Based on the changes i saw in power with the smaller housing...your thing would be a hard to beat setup that s bolts to the std manifold. Be interesting to see of you crack the top end your hunting after the next round of tweaks

next round of tweak is going on as we speak :D

new ignition is already on, but still the miss

fuel pump died on friday so hopefully replacing it with bosch 040 will maybe fix the miss as it may have been the rail running low pressure top end

also tossing up the idea of welding a external gate onto the standard manifold for better boost response and control as well as to lower the backpressure in the exhaust manifold top end

Edited by Cerbera
much better :)

looking at carl h graph makes me get bad ideas about upgrading to gt30r love and some cams

its really not that laggy for the extra power

hahaha, oh you know you want to join the darkside.

also keep in mind my engine wasnt in good nic (140 psi HOT! across all cylinders) so on an engine with higher compression its very possible it will come on earlier and even harder than she did in mine.

gt30r is very well suited to the rb20, almost as if it was designed for it......

I found this plot on NS of a TD06 on an SR20DET with Greddy TD06 L2 20G, Built motor, Hks 256in/264ex, Hks cam sprockets, Autronic, Msd Cdi, Bosche coils, Blitz 850cc, Bosche fuel pump, Blitz intercooler, Blitz stainless pod, Blitz Sbc iD.

Was havign a sticky beak as im playign with motor combos at the moment (will probably not end up doign any of them) and all this talk about SR20DETs being more responsive etc etc. Plus if an RB can be put in an S13 so easy, then surely the SR is a relatively straight forward swap. Combined with the weight savings, cost of 4 rods/pistons etc, and the much talked about lack of torque of the RB20, against the SR superiors supposed ability to spool turbos

Phew, get what im getting at :( LOL a tweaked SR20 appears to be no more repsonise then a std RB20 with the same turbo setup. So the first comparison i found doesnt do the SR20 chitter chatter much good

Im hunting around for a few equivelant turbo SR v RB20 comparisons. It appears that the weight of the average S13, combined with the gearing is probably proves more a factor then the additional stroke fo the SR20 in making it a more lively street car.?!?!?!

So Round 1 with SR20 vs RB20 with TD06 is a draw :)

Perhaps a win to the RB20 considering it doesn thave cams :)

Yeh but from the results i have been looking at, the whoel SR being ouncjier then the RB20 is a crock. The RB20 doesnt have any trouble matching the power of similarily modded SR20s.

Be interesting of more ppl plotted torque on the right axis rather then A/R or psi

I'm in two minds at the moment... Whether to swap to a 25 if(when :() my 20 blows, or to keep the 20 and work the tits off it.. Its for drifting - a few of the guys over here have bulk power coming from 25's on standard internals.. so I dunno what I should do...

Roy, I think you'll find the S14/S15 SR20DETs with VCT spool the turbo a fair bit quicker than the S13 donk thanks to the added overlap in the midrange. Disable the VCT and the turbo becomes suprisingly alot more laggy...

LOL... then i want one of those HKS vatiable cam timing RB26 kits for the little RB20:)

Will be interesting to compare, a friend had a 230-240rwk S14 with Nizpro setup and its not overly different to my car to drive..though he did say his car did have a bit more urge if you were crawling up a hill at 2,500rpm in 3rd, so under load or light throttle could be worlds apart

With regards to off boost accel.

Maxx's r33 RB25det felt as if it had the same low down urge as his s15 sr20det.

HOWEVER, the sr20 didn't feel as revy and the power band felt shorter due to the shorter 6speed ratio's.

    • Hey Dave, welcome aboard! Good to see another soon-to-be Stagea owner here. The wagons are awesome — plenty of space, still got that Skyline DNA, and loads of potential if you’re into mods. Definitely post up pics when you get it, everyone here loves seeing new builds. What model/year are you looking at?
    • See if you can thermal epoxy a heatsink or two onto it?
    • The other problem was one of those "oh shit we are going to die moments". Basically the high spec Q50s have a full electric steering rack, and the povo ones had a regular hydraulic rack with an electric pump.  So couple of laps into session 5 as I came into turn 2 (big run off now, happily), the dash turned into a christmas tree and the steering became super heavy and I went well off. I assumed it was a tyre failure so limped to the pits, but everything was OK. But....the master warning light was still on so I checked the DTCs and saw – C13E6 “Heat Protection”. Yes, that bloody steering rack computer sitting where the oil cooler should be has its own sensors and error logic, and decided I was using the steering wheel too much. I really appreciated the helpful information in the manual (my bold) POSSIBLE CAUSE • Continuing the overloading steering (Sports driving in the circuit etc,) “DATA MONITOR” >> “C/M TEMPERATURE”. The rise of steering force motor internal temperature caused the protection function to operate. This is not a system malfunction. INSPECTION END So, basically the electric motor in the steering rack got to 150c, and it decided to shut down without warning for my safety. Didn't feel safe. Short term I'll see if I can duct some air to that motor (the engine bay is sealed pretty tight). Long term, depending on how often this happens, I'll look into swapping the povo spec electric/hydraulic rack in. While the rack should be fine the power supply to the pump will be a pain and might be best to deal with it when I add a PDM.
    • And finally, 2 problems I really need to sort.  Firstly as Matt said the auto trans is not happy as it gets hot - I couldn't log the temps but the gauge showed 90o. On the first day I took it out back in Feb, because the coolant was getting hot I never got to any auto trans issues; but on this day by late session 3 and then really clearly in 4 and 5 as it got hotter it just would not shift up. You can hear the issue really clearly at 12:55 and 16:20 on the vid. So the good news is, literally this week Ecutek finally released tuning for the jatco 7 speed. I'll have a chat to Racebox and see what they can do electrically to keep it cooler and to get the gears, if anything. That will likely take some R&D and can only really happen on track as it never gets even warm with road use. I've also picked up some eye wateringly expensive Redline D6 ATF to try, it had the highest viscosity I could find at 100o so we will see if that helps (just waiting for some oil pan gaskets so I can change it properly). If neither of those work I need to remove the coolant/trans interwarmer and the radiator cooler and go to an external cooler....somewhere.....(goodbye washer reservoir?), and if that fails give up on this mad idea and wait for Nissan to release the manual 400R
    • So, what else.... Power. I don't know what it is making because I haven't done a post tune dyno run yet; I will when I get a chance. It was 240rwkw dead stock. Conclusion from the day....it does not need a single kw more until I sort some other stuff. It comes on so hard that I could hear the twin N1 turbos on the R32 crying, and I just can't use what it has around a tight track with the current setup. Brakes. They are perfect. Hit them hard all day and they never felt like having an issue; you can see in the video we were making ground on much lighter cars on better tyres under brakes. They are standard (red sport) calipers, standard size discs in DBA5000 2 piece, Winmax pads and Motul RBF600 fluid, all from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney. Keeping in mind the car is more powerful than my R32 and weighs 1780, he clearly knows his shit. Suspension. This is one of the first areas I need to change. It has electronically controlled dampers from factory, but everything is just way too soft for track work even on the hardest setting (it is nice when hustling on country roads though). In particular it rolls into oversteer mid corner and pitches too much under hard braking so it becomes unstable eg in the turn 1 kink I need to brake early, turn through the kink then brake again so I don't pirouette like an AE86. I need to get some decent shocks with matched springs and sway bars ASAP, even if it is just a v1 setup until I work out a proper race/rally setup later. Tyres. I am running Yoko A052 in 235/45/18 all round, because that was what I could get in approximately the right height on wheels I had in the shed (Rays/Nismo 18x8 off the old Leaf actually!). As track tyres they are pretty poor; I note GTSBoy recently posted a porker comparo video including them where they were about the same as AD09.....that is nothing like a top line track tyre. I'll start getting that sorted but realistically I should get proper sized wheels first (likely 9.5 +38 front and 11 +55 at the rear, so a custom order, and I can't rotate them like the R32), then work out what the best tyre option is. BTW on that, Targa Tas had gone to road tyres instead of semi slicks now so that is a whole other world of choices to sort. Diff. This is the other thing that urgently needs to be addressed. It left massive 1s out of the fish hook all day, even when I was trying not too (you can also hear it reving on the video, and see the RPM rising too fast compared to speed in the data). It has an open diff that Infiniti optimistically called a B-LSD for "Brake Limited Slip Diff". It does good straight line standing start 11s but it is woeful on the track. Nismo seem to make a 2 way for it.
