33 gtr rebuild

Recommended Posts

Hi just after some info on rebuilding my gtr, I want to use the car on track days and squeeze the most HP I can out of it and still be able to drive the thing to work!

I have the following parts already

A orc twin plate clutch

3 inch exhaust ( hks dumps / front pipe )

550 cc injectors

After market fuel rail

Fuel regulator

Big fuel pump

I want to rebuild the engine and I’m thinking of using the following parts

34 N1 turbos

NISMO Bearing Connecting Rod Set

NISMO Bearing Main Set RB

TOMEI Reinforced Con Rod Bolts

TOMEI Gasket Combination

TOMEI Oil Pan Baffle Plate

TRUST GReddy Large Capacity Oil Pump

HKS Forged Piston Kit

TRUST GReddy Heavy Duty Timing Belt

HKS cam gears

APEXi Power FC + Boost Controller Kit

TRUST GReddy Oil Filter Moval Type Oil Cooler Kit (Thermostat included)

NISMO Water Pump

NISMO Low Temp Thermostat

A few things I’m un sure of :

The pistons I was looking at are the forged hks 87mm stage 2 ones are these tough??? Recommendations please

Are there any other mods I need to do for track days, recommendations please

Is there any other things I shoud replace while I have the engine out???

Sorry about the long post, but please help...

Get it built by a good engine builder and make sure they tweak the oil system in it. I've been told thats the weakest bit in the RB26 and it needs to be reworked when rebuilding.

How much power are you after?

For track days i'd think more about handling mods than power mods...

I'd also look at HKS turbos instead of the N1's unless there is a reason you're going for the N1's..

I have the same goal as you, daily driver i can race on the weekends... its a fine line... but when my engine/turbos go i'd prefer to go for HKS 2530's or GTSS's suppose to be a lot better than the N1's...

I don't know much about the other stuff... PowerFC i agree with, Oil cooler definatly - get a biggest you can fit 16 row or something...

I probably know less than you, but doesn't hurt for an extra opinion :D

I'd look into handling mods more than power mods from my expereince on the track they make a big difference..

I'd go HKS turbos, not the N1's, GTSS or 2530's are good stuff... PowerFC for sure, oil cooler for sure, sump baffle for sure.. rest of the stuff i don't know much about

Biggest thing is make sure your engine builded knows RB26's, the oil system is suppose to be the weak part and needs to be reworked when rebuilding for more reliablity.

yeah make sure you get the oil system tewaked up in the rb26.. i am not too sure on whats ment to be done. but it involves stopping oil going somewhere and going somewhere else. ?? your best to find out about this otherwise if you do use your car on the track bad things will happen and you'll be rebuilding your motor again..

best to get it right the first time!!!!!!!!!!! cant stress this enough..

and if n1 turbos are 1000 bucks cheeper use them.. N1 turbos support up to 600hp..

and for a track gtr you dont really need anything more than 350kw at the wheels. and n1 turbos will do this fine i think.

cool thanks good info,

The car handles sweet, it has coil overs already not sure of the brand something like aragosta I think ?? ( there gold in colour and have adjustable dampening and hight )

oil system tewaked does any one out there know of what other oil mods need to be done ? ?

One other idea I had was to get a whole N1 engine from just Jap and through that puppy in ... has any one brought a complete N1 engine ?

Can u buy the whole thing complete ??

Any advise please.....

add a tomei style oil line restrictor, and maybe some extra baffling or foam in the head to keep oil out. that, baffles in the sump, an n1 oil pump and a big arse oil cooler should do it :D

I personally haven't used an n1 engine, but I understand its only the block that is different anyway....you would still want forgies and the other oil mods mentioned.

the n1 motors at just jap are rather on the expensive side i beleive 12k. i think they be selling them as long blocks. ( block, crank, pistons, and head, all the gear inside also) but nothing else..

an idea would be to possibly get someone to get you a complete working n1 motor.

try sss.. that could be of some help and possibly cheeper in the long run.

i now have a question..... with n1 motors do they have the oil pickup problems in cornering that the normal motors have?? help on that topic would be good.,

its all different i beleive. pistons crank etc.....

If you were in Melbourne i'd recommend Racepace to build it, but not sure about sydney..

Merli got his whole engine rebuilt somewhere in sydney, spent big bucks on it, top of the line forged everything, no idea who rebuilt it, but first track day, BANG, not sure what the details are, but i could only guess the engine wasn't built properly :D

Mechanics don't build engines, Engine builders usually build engines :)

Find someone whos had thier RB26 rebuilt and races it, and find out who did it in Sydney and what they think of them, speak to them all then pick someone to do it for you and ask them all your questions, I think thats the best bet.

sorry I should have been more specific, I mean inside the rocker covers. There is already some baffling up there.

We're building the second race engine at the moment but since we are running 3E regulations we have to use basically standard engine including internals. The oil mods are about all we can do but they seem to do the trick for reliability, our other car did about 6 sprint weekends + a 1hr enduro +practice days + targa tas without any problems.

There are some very experienced skyline engine builders in Sydney. I guess CRD would be the most well known but they certainly charge for their reputation. Powerplay Imports have been rebuilding a few big GTR engines lately too.

Did Merli ever post any details after his rebuild? I really wanted to know how it went as he was doing almost exactly what I would like too...

i'll add a few links from tomei who seem to know whats up!!

http://www.tomei-p.co.jp/_2003web-catalogu...RB_oillube.html

i could try find someone who builds good rb26's in sydne for you but am not too sure as most of my mates get their shit done in japan by mines or tomei and the like..

and if i was to get my engine rebuilt i would purchace all the parts myself!! but making sure what i get is right! going through www.greenline.jp is always good to work out a cheep price!!!

and wouldnt get any of the local workshops doing it, as i'd rather have mine built by someone who actually specialises in engine rebuilding!!!

hope that link helps!!!!

pablo321, you should talk to the engine builder before buying all those parts, different people have different opinions about what you need......

1 thing to consider is that there is more and more expertise in RBs in australia these days, and things like oil cooler kits aren't exactly rocket science. No point paying twice as much in jp for something you can get from a local company. Also, forged pistons for instance, you can get much cheaper from local companies, rocket sell arias with rings for about $1100.

And finally from memory the tomei baffle kit is pretty basic, you are better off with something local and custom (eg mick's metalcraft) or the trust sump extension instead.

lwells: THeres not much info on here, he disapeared off the from right after it happend, and never really gave much info - maybe he was embarresed or something? Not sure.

I thought you didn't want more power, that your car was quick enough? I remember a thread somewhere with you saying that :D We all do tho :D

pablo: No haven't had my engine rebuilt yet - it hasn't blown up yet touch wood... but _when_ it does, it will be a racepace built engine, I'm in no rush for it, i'm happy with the power i have at the moment.

Yeah, he disappeared: a PM'ed him some time ago for details but he never replied :) He did popup just after the EVLR34 crash, but seems to have disappeared again.

I think if you go back and read what I said, I stated I was happy to enjoy the car stock for the time being while I get use to it and my bank balance recovers. My plan has always been to eventually try and build my own little 'response GT-R' -- ie. modify it the way *I* want, hence having a blank canvas -- but its some time in the hazy distance. My interest in Merli's build is because he seemed to be doing exactly the same thing... I particularly wanted to see how the GT-SS's turned out.

Awful that it all went bang :P

Lucien.
