Hey guys, did a search couldnt find much really... anyway to the point

i want to buy a blitz power intake kit, which consists of a pod filter and adaptions etc etc...

but im not sure if this is the way to go...

Can someone help me out and recommend something to me? I'm not sure if the blitz power intake kit is the way to go, or go buy a K&N panel filter, and leave the filter in the standard airbox.

I have heard that many people do it this way, but is it worth spending that little extra and getting the full kit? Which one actually gets better gains.

Thanks,

Dayne

you can change your panel filter for a nice K&N highflow panel filter and achieve almost the same gains that you would recieve from a POD - and in some cases where no partition is made to stop hot ait coming into the POD you would be best to use the high flow panel filter.

Re. POD's - i haven't had any experiance with the BLITZ filters - but I know K&N are rated 1st/2nd in filtration/airflow - the K&N filters are great...

K&N filter goes for 159 (the one i got) or less from autobahn (they range from 70-159 i think). You buy cleaning kits for them for about 20 bucks - and will clean your POD about 4 times - so the K&N option is very attractive for lifespan of the POD

Thanks for the quick reply...

So what your saying is the panel filter can almost achieve the same amount that the pod filter can??

The pod filter that im looking at is actually an apexi one, i stuffed up on that one, my bad, but the link can be seen here

http://www.modyourcar.com.au/product_info....roducts_id=2604

And it says something about having two funnels insted of the normal one,

do you think this here is a better option??

Im pretty keen for it, but again, would like to know what really would give me the better gains.

Thanks again

Its pretty hard to tell.. there was a thread floating around mentioning the pros and cons

of using either a panel filter or pod filter...

ie. certain filters have good flow, but lets more crap through OR certain filters have poor

flow, but keeps all the crap out (it actually filters properly).

Its all about trial and error, where u live (pollution, dust, etc...) You'd want to find one

which kinda sits in between, filters properly and has decent airflow.

Stock airbox in my opinion is quite restricted (as the airflow from the snorkel passes, through the panel filter, then has an awkward angel to get to the AFM duct.

I am planning to use the stock snorkel feeding into a partition, with a pod, this way I have

the snorkel inlet, and a bit of extra air coming in around the headlights and grill.

Mind you if you do decide to use a pod, it is a good idea to make a partition to shield the

heat from the engine bay.

Alright, thanks for that.

I'm pretty sure i am going to go the apexi pod now, and i might try make a heat shield too.. any ideas what i can make that out of and where to get it from??

I'll try search again now to find the thread your on about.. and maybe some heat shield ideas..

Thanks for all your help

I agree that the 33 has a bit of a bad air box design... However on my last skyline going from a standard air box and standrd panel to a pod i lost power.... There was a big difference... It gave the exhaust a better note and blow off sounded good at low pis.. But apart from that i had no gain until i partitioned that section on the engine bay and had a custom inlet from below the head light.... Worked a treat then and that was with a standard multi purpose K&N pod filter....

The new car i opted to just go a K&N panel filter as im trying to keep this car pretty easy to return to standard and make it look fairly standard under the hood.....

if your going to use a POD without a partition and a good intake system (to get cool air to it) then your wasteing your money - you may as well use the stock airbox + panel

you need the partition - otherwise the POD is sucking in hot air form the engine - and less cooler air is betetr than more hot air...

and about filtration, any of the 'name' brands such as apexi/k&n are great

Thanks for the replys but no one has answered my question yet, where can i get the box from, or what materials can i make it out of and where can i get them from!! I'm really dont know, i know i can get some 3" funnel from bunnings, for the induction, but where can i get some heat shield or something from to build the box surroundings from??

Thanks,

Dayne

Go to a decent hardware store and purchace some aluminium, use some stiff cardboard to make a template first, then translate this to the aluminium. If u have some tin snips the metal, you will be laughing.

I have a Pod, with full enclosed pod and large intake pipe (3inches, flexible plastic tubing), that draws air from the front left of the front bar. There is more power, but only noticable above 4500rpm till redline.

dayne: I have decided to use aluminum flashing for my partition. Like Nismodified said, get a

cardboard to make a template... I am currently doing this, and make AS MANY templates as

needed. Its far better and easier to cut cardboard than metal, you want to cut it first time

and cut it right.

My partition comes across from the headlight and encloses the AFM with the pod (I am unsure

whether this will have any effect - I assume not) and then towards the strut.

Make sure you bolt down the filter with brackets first before attempting to make the

template, as the filter will move and you want to cut the smallest hole possible to let the

least amount of engine heat to pass through.

Attach the stock snorkel if you wish (increased airflow) and cut here and there to make it fit.

You may want to add a plastic type lid... Go to the forsale section there is a guy selling

these pod filter boxes, they look real trick - but nothing wrong with getting your hands

dirty and actually modifying your car.

EDIT: If you do decide to make an intake pipe to the pod (I dont think NA's have the intercooler hole) make sure you be careful and try not to get anywater into it.

like puddles, or skidpans... water + afm = no no

Eug - there's worse problems then water getting to you AFM - water getting into the engine == blown rods etc

yeah, essentially thats what could happen, but realistically I would find it hard

to see water going through the intake pipe, onto the pod, through the AFM

and into the throttle body.

that said... what we are both getting at here is to keep water out of the internals

Thanks for all the responces guys..

I think i will buy the pod, and custom up my own design box as you guys said, looks like it could be a bit of fun doing so! plus.. modding your car is about you doing some of the work yourself, not others doing it for you, so i guess you have to start somewhere!

I also have all the tools at home to do so aswell.. one thing i was wondering though, is how did you guys manage to bolt the box down? just make some brackets or something and attach them to previous bolts??

Dayne

Eug -

when your turbo is spooling there is a shitload of suction when running mid-high boost - water can easily enter the internals mate - i've seen it happen to my mates 300ZX - and search the forum here - it's not as rare as you might think!

and about the CAI - check out the for sale section - i just bought, or am in the process of buying a box off a guy - it's very very clean :P

he has 1 left (different sort than i got but would still work) for 100 bucks..

Sorry about the slow responce.... I bought mine in carbon fibre and it bolts into the same holes as the standard air box. Then takes a cold air intake from the standard intercooler hole in the front bar..... This was in my old 31 GTS-X and i bought it from R31 house and took about 20 minutes to put in.

It olny cost $120 delivered from japan. Very cheap and looks a million bucks... However i have not seen this type for a 32/33 or 34...

My old one was an open top version with rubber round the top... Once the hood was closed the bonnet completed the seald box... This way you could see the pod and clean it easily...

Im trying to track one down the same for my 33 but have had no luck so far...
