I have a R32 GTS-4. The turbo has always made a wizzing/buzzing sound at high revs (4000rpm+) but still seems to boost fine. I saw a R33 turbo with 30000km on Ebay which I purchased thinking it would make a good upgrade. However on getting the Turbo I believe it auctually a R32 Turbo (16v on the casing) and it has some play in the shaft. Questions as follows. Should I install a Turbo that has play in the shaft? It spins freely and looks to be in good condition but I am no turbo expert. Any idea what the sound from my current turbo would be?

Thanks

all turbos have some sort of play

this play dissapears when the turbo is full of oil

ie.... the shaft sorta floats on the oil

although i would have someone look at the seals in case they are cooked

hope this helps

I'd send it back as it isn't what was advertised.

Also an r32 turbo is worth maybe 200 bucks, i dunno what you paid for yours but if it was more than that i'd be giving the seller a massive serve.

If you are worried about the play in the shaft i'd recommend taking it to some one who knows what they are looking at, particularly as the k's on it would be in doubt now too.

You may also want to check the size of the water banjo bolts on the turbo as this will give you an idea whether it's of an early or late model r32 and also whether it will bolt up to your car without having to replace the lines.

how long do you want to wait?

I have an r32 I am half thinking of pulling off.. and changing for an RB25 one.. if I have somebody to pay $100 for the old turbo (minus wastegate) I could maybe speed this up a little  .. no wine, shouldn't have hardly any shaft play (never seen past std. boost I would say)..

but that's only if you want to stick another rb20det one on there..

No I have exact same issue. I took it to Benny at Chasers Tuning (who is amazing with skylines) and he said the turbo is well and truely f*cked. The wining is the turbo spining off balance. It will hold boost but it won't be very efficient

    • It is a kunfine Android screen . Does anyone know the wirering diagram of the fuga ??
    • just an update to this, poor man pays twice  Tried sanding down the pulleys but it didnt do the trick. Chucked another second hand alternator in the na car which I got for free off my mate and its fixed the squelling. Must have been unlucky with the bearings.    As for my turbo car, I managed to pick up a cwc rb alternator conversion bracket + LS alternator for 250 off marketplace, looked to be in really good nick. Installed it , started the car and its not charging the battery.... ( Im not good with auto elec stuff so im not sure if this was all I needed to do but I verified such by using a multimeter on the battery when the engine was running and I was only getting 12.2v )   I had to modify the earth strap for the new LS alternator , factory earth strap was a 10mm bolt which did not fit the bolt on the LS alternator which was double the size so I cut it off , went to repco bought some ring terminals that fit, crimped it onto the old earth strap and bolted it up to the alternator , started the car and same issue. Ran like shit and was reading 12.2 at the battery.  For a "plug and play" advertised kit thats not very plug and play but alas.  My question is , am I missing something ? Ive been reading that some people recommend upgrading the stock 80 amp alternator fuse to a 140 amp but I dont see how that would stop the alternator charging especially at idle not under load.  Regardless ive pulled it out and am going to get it bench tested by an auto elec tomorrow but it would be handy to know if ive missed something silly or have done something wrong.
    • My wild guess is that you have popped off an intake pipe....check all of the hoses between the turbo and the throttle for splits or loose clamps.
    • Awesome, thanks for sharing!
    • To provide more specific help, more information is needed. What Android screen? What is its wiring diagram? Does the car's wiring have power at any required BAT and ACC wires, and is the loom's earth good?
