HI all, new to these forums (uh der post count of 1) and Nissans in general.

I recently smashed my Fairmont Ghia V8 into a tree, it has taken two weeks and I still havn't found out wether they want to repair it or not (RACV). It is so close to being written off that they wanted to do a live inspection and are now apparently waiting on pricing of cirtain parts.

Anyways it's so close I think it will be written off and if it is, I want to get into another car asap so I started looking around at cars up to $15k (the ghia is/was worth around 20 but I want some money left over for mods this time). The Fords in this price range just don't appeal to me and then I got to looking at Jap imports.

A Skyline has cirtainly caught my interest (specifically a black 1995 R33 GTS-T) and seems pretty good but I don't know that much about these cars at all so started researching which eventually lead me here.

As a complete n00b to skylines what should I be looking for in one? What are my realistic options in the skyline range? And how do these stack up in the bang-for-buck department?

Sorry for the long post, I like to know exactly what I am getting into :(

Check out this thread for information on what to look for when buying a skyline http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/sh...ead.php?t=35129

As for bang-for-buck department, I dare say the fairmont would have had its ass handed to it on a plate by a relatively stock skyline.

:(

For $15k though you will be pushing it to find a decent condition 1995 Gts-t. You could easily pick up a non turbo one for that but if I were you I'd try to spend more of that $20k on the initial purchase and save the mods for a little down the track.

At the initial tiime of purchase, you're better of getting a better condition car than having a little left over for mods and skimpy on the quality.

If you can extend the budget to say, $17-18k you will pick up a very good condition Skyline perhaps even with a few mods already on it.

And you WILL be impressed. Skylines are in a far superior leage to Ford Falcons :(

Amaru - Thanks I will check that out, I think at almost 1700kg and only 140kw@wheels the Ghia might be in a bit of trouble :(

Dee 33 - Thanks for the advice, will be looking very carefully at any car I plan on purchasing. I could stretch it out really to anything up to say 22k it's just wether I like the repayments or not :) So 18-20 is realistic to get something quality.

Anyone had any dealings with Power Road Car Sales?

Madness to think u will get a 34 for 15k :P

At around 15k the line might be out of your range. Remember that if you save money on it now you will prolly end up spending money later. Oh and dont buy a non turbo, they blow, or dont blow for that matter (no offense to GTS ppl).

Might be worth looking at the s-13s (silvias and 180sxs) as they are very nice and quick cars and are easily modded for under 15k. They are just as good if not better in my opinion its just that they dont have that low down torque that you get from those extra 2 cyl. plus they handle like go karts. Save you on insuance too, which will be a doozy, 3-4k for ppl in our age bracket.

Oh oooo.

Like i always say, if u cant afford or get insuance for a car like this then u cant have it, simple as. The probabilty of hitting inanimate objects or cars is just too damn high. Plus if some moron nails you and ure not insured it is a pain in the ass to get money out of them is they too are uninsured and that whole time ure car is off the road.

not a huge fan of the soarer but the supra mkIII oooho baby. If you can get one from 92' with the single turbo and vvti u will be lucky but very happy. They should go for around 12k. The twin is still good too though. Make sure its the 2.5l not the crappy 3L.

They handle good at high speed but lose traction as they dont exactly drift too well, trust me, i know :burnout:

    • This sounds very old of me, however since buying the Tiguan shit box, my view on shit boxes have changed.
    • I've looked up the parts number (41011AL501). It's around $700 OEM. Usually our Infiniti G35 here in Canada have interchangeable parts with my Stagea but the parts number are not the same. I have looked around and it seems the JDM 2005 V35 Skyline (which is the same as our G35) has the same caliper but I cannot confirm. And I can't find a repair kit. The inner brake pads drags on the rotor, seems to be rusty piston. Thanks for the info by the way
    • This coupled with 6-9 speed autos with ridiculously short gearing is why these modern shitbox cars always seem so fast off the line. If it wasn't for those things, Raptors would not seem fast. The problem we have is there is a driveability gap between a more gentle take off and a wheelspinning sideways launch. The difference between ankle flex required to achieve one and ankle flex required to achieve the other is about 0.5°.
    • Yeah I think I'm also with the opposite here. It's 'hard to keep up with traffic' because in the real world I'm accelerating with 15% throttle and they are pinning it. It feels like I'm being an overt dickhead at anything above 15% throttle, so the car sounds like I'm being an overt dickhead to keep up with/get ahead of traffic when I'm really just trying to drive with traffic. There would be no issue 'keeping up with traffic' if we used the same level of throttle input/aggression to drive around. People really do just drive around with their foot nearly pinned in econoboxes.
    • To be fair it's the other way around. 300kw is boring in a modern Golf or BMW. They are so competent / well-engineered / devoid of emotion that you have to go stupid fast to feel anything. Whereas the <300kw RB still makes all the right noises and it feels good to drive. Can pull off at the lights with the turbo whooshing and the blow-off pssshing and feel like the coolest kid on the block. Just don't look to the side where you'll see the bored housewifes in their shitbox Yaris/Corolla/Camry that kept up because you didn't go fast at all
